  1. Paetongtarn Shinawatra said on Tuesday that her father, Thaksin, who is receiving medical treatment at the Police General Hospital, is still under stress and suffering the after effects of COVID-19. Paetongtarn was speaking at a press conference at Pheu Thai headquarters after visiting her father on Monday. “My father is suffering from fatigue, as you could see when he returned to Thailand on August 22. He is under a lot of stress.” She claimed she had learnt at the same time as the media that Thaksin had been transferred from the Corrections Department to the Police General Hospital. “In 2020, my father was infected with COVID-19 which, at that time, lacked medication to treat it. He was in the ICU for nine days and lost about 10 kilogrammes,” she said. Her father tried to exercise when he was free of the virus, but this was a challenge at 74 years old, plus he was stressed. 6. Pha Ngan businesses raise awareness of Full Moon Party’s weeklong events Locals are raising awareness that Full Moon Party has a week of activities, like Jungle Experience, pictured here. 7. August hosts a rare occurrence, two full moons in one month. In Thailand that can only mean two Full Moon Parties, with the second on August 31. Now a group of local businesses have banded together to spread awareness that full moon festivities have grown from a single one-night party to a week of events at venues all over the island of Koh Pha Ngan. A growing number of local hotel and hostel owners, restaurant and food stall owners, event organisers and shopkeepers have been pushing for the concept of a Full Moon Week to go viral. They hope to alert backpackers and young travellers who have heard of the legendary party but are unaware of the famous pre-parties and post-parties that take place on the vibrant island. In fact, all accommodations in Haad Rin, where the party takes place, used to have a five-night minimum stay around the Full Moon Party dates. They found customers enjoyed the experience more and got better value for their money when they stayed longer and tried a variety of events. But with increased competition and the drop in tourism from Covid-19, minimum night stays were largely eliminated. Koh Pha Ngan has perhaps the most diverse nightlife of any location in Thailand. Instead of a nightly club district like Bangla Road in Phuket, Pattaya Walking Street or Soi Mango in Koh Samui, there are venues, jungles, and beaches all over the island that host weekly or monthly events. Some are aimed at the spiritual new age side of the island, featuring drum circles or ecstatic dance or meditation events. Others bring some of the top DJs in Thailand and from around the world for massive outdoor raves and smaller weekly socials. But during the Full Moon week, as many as 20,000 people flock to the island for the world-famous party that’s been going for decades. So many of the regular weekly or monthly parties reach a fevered apex during the nights leading up to the most famous party as well as in the days following when afterparties can start as early as 6am the day after Full Moon Party. Many people come for one night, arriving in the evening and catching an early ferry out the next morning. But this group of local businesses and organisers say that tourists often regret not knowing how much they are missing out on until it’s too late. One local hostel in the centre of Haad Rin has been hosting pre-parties for five days straight each month. The owner of WET! a Pool Party Hostel by Wild & Wandering explains that people coming for one night aren’t getting the full picture. 9. While emergency decrees over the Covid-19 pandemic situation are finally a thing of the past, the continuously troubled Deep South region of Thailand has been operating under an ongoing emergency decree aimed at protecting citizens from the threat of the long-term insurgency constant in the area. The three southern border provinces of Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat, are a buffer between Thailand and Malaysia just across the border. Those provinces will endure the extension of the emergency decree for an additional three months. This emergency decree extension, running from September 20 to December 19 of this year, was agreed upon earlier today by the committee managing the emergency situation. The meeting, led by Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon, was held via video conference from the office of the Five Provinces Bordering Forest Preservation Foundation. Prawit’s assistant spokesman, Lieutenant General Pacharasak Patirupanon, elaborated that the decree is already active in most parts of the three provinces. 11. Internet idol Mintan, renowned for the page หนูมินตันทาสกระดาน continues to face relentless harassment from a persistent stalker. Mintan recently updated her followers that the same security guard who had previously been found guilty of harassing her is once again causing her distress. Mintan exposed her ordeal in a post, revealing that she has been tormented for almost three years by the same individual suffering from a mental disorder. The court had ordered him to cease all forms of harassment, both offline and online. Despite this, he remains undeterred and shows no regard for the law. She described the punishment given to the security guard as minimal, merely meeting with probation officers and paying a fine. The stalker continues to lurk, and Mintan has heightened her guard. She questioned the legal system’s efficiency, stating that it seems victims must wait until a stalker’s harassment escalates before the law intervenes seriously. “I’ve tried to stay silent on this matter. I don’t like drama, really. I want to focus on my work. But, the quieter I become, the more he feels encouraged and the harassment intensifies.” By Neill Fronde Caption: Mintan still faces harassment from the same security guard stalker courts punished last year. 17. A surge in Zika virus cases sparked a warning from the Department of Disease Control (DDC). In the last month, 266 cases were reported. Pregnant women are at risk, as the virus can cause babies to be born with microcephaly, a result of underdeveloped brains. The DDC made the announcement yesterday, August 27. The monsoon season, with its frequent rain, has created ideal conditions for disease-carrying mosquitoes. Bird baths and other containers that collect water can become breeding grounds. The public is urged to promptly remove any such containers to reduce the risk of Zika and other diseases. In the past four weeks, more than 24 provinces reported new Zika cases. The highest number of cases were reported in Chanthaburi (37 cases) and Phetchabun (23 cases). Zika in pregnant women can lead to microcephaly in their infants, resulting in birth defects and delayed development. Some cases can even lead to miscarriage. Pregnant women showing symptoms such as fever, rash, red eyes, and joint pain should suspect Zika infection and seek medical attention immediately. 19. Police charged a Thai Mercedes-Benz driver after he threatened motorcycle taxi riders in the Thong Lor area of Bangkok with a gun and used crystal methamphetamine. His five friends were charged with using the drug. The Thai man charged, 44 year old Chawin Chanintarawanich, crashed his Mercedes-Benz into a motorcycle taxi rider, 39 year old Kwanchai Tadee at 8.40am on Friday, August 25. Chawin shifted the blame to Kwanchai and got out of his car after the crash to confront him. Chawin even banished a gun to threaten the taxi rider. He claimed he was a police officer and said he knew a lot of high-profile police officers. Chawin then punched Kwanchai in the face, making the encounter escalate. Friends of both parties attempted to engage in a fight but officers from Thong Lor Police Station intervened just in time. Police then discovered 200 grammes of crystal meth in the Mercedes-Benz. This discovery prompted officers to subject both Chawin and five of his companions to a drug test, all of which yielded positive results. Furthermore, the officers later found that the registration plate Chawin used on the luxury car was fake. The other five suspects were identified as a 40 year old man named Yuttana Chanprason, a 21 year old transwoman named Ittiphat Laohanusin, a 34 year old woman named Thamon Jarunan, a 21 year old man named Panjarat Chaipara, and a 36 year old woman named Jirunthanin Phisitthanon. 21. Investigations have been launched into 49 residences suspected of illegal construction in Thailand’s Phuket region. Thalang District Chief, Bancha Thanu-in, instructed the leaders of Thepkrasattri Tambon Administration Organisation (OrBorTor) and Sakhu OrBorTor to carry out these probes. These alleged violations came to light earlier this month, with a deadline of September 15 for the two OrBorTor chiefs to present their findings. As per the report, 34 of these suspect houses are located in Tambon Thepkrasattri, while the other 15 are in Tambon Sakhu. Notably, these areas are situated around Phuket International Airport. The order was a direct response to a complaint lodged by Jamroon Kerddam, Chairman of the Gulf of Thailand – Andaman Area Conservation Network. Following the accusation, Piya Raksakul, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Special Investigation (DSi), arrived in Phuket on August 15 to examine the alleged illegal constructions and illicit occupation of areas within the Bang Khanun Protected Forest. The complaint incorporated confidential information from a conservationist part of the network based in Phuket. It drew attention to a significant flooding incident at Phuket International Airport in Thalang District, Phuket Province, last year. The incident negatively impacted the city’s reputation as a prime tourist destination, marking an unprecedented disaster. By Mitch Connor Caption: Illegal villas in Phuket. 23. Phuket’s Marine Office issued a stern warning to all boat operators due to the approaching turbulent weather, especially at sea. This advisory comes as the Thai Meteorological Department predicts strong wind, large waves and heavy rainfall in the upper Andaman Sea from tomorrow through Saturday. The forecast, delivered by Nachapong Pranit, Director of Marine Office 5 Phuket Branch, suggests that the southwest monsoon over the upper Andaman Sea and Southern Thailand’s west coast is set to intensify. This change in weather is likely to bring about substantial rain, with some areas experiencing extremely heavy downpours that are set to be most affected including the provinces of Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, and Krabi. In light of these developments, the Marine Office warning urges residents to remain vigilant of the severe conditions. Forecasts predict wind waves in the upper part of the Andaman Sea reaching heights of 2 metres, and up to 3 metres in thundershower areas – unsafe for most boats. 25. A century-old fig tree has become a sensation as villagers discovered a female statue, referred to as Mother Wrapped in Fig, entwined in its roots in Wat Charoen Suk, Klong Lan District, Kamphaeng Phet. The statue, which appears to be dressed in silk-like clothing and adorned with a crown, attracted over 60 villagers, who arrive daily to pay respects and seek lottery numbers. The news of the unique discovery spread quickly on Facebook, transforming the old fig tree into a popular destination. The locals have been visiting the site frequently, hoping that their prayers for good fortune will be answered. The statue was aptly named Mother Wrapped in Fig due to its position within the fig tree roots, which encircle the statue up to its chest. Upon visiting the site, our reporter observed more than 60 villagers offering flowers, incense, and candles to the statue. They performed prayers and rituals beside the fig tree, with most of them seeking lucky lottery numbers. The numbers 3, 4, and 7 became apparent from the incense sticks, followed by a grand firework display with 1,000 firecrackers. The tail numbers from the firecrackers turned out to be 1, 2, 8, 3, and 5.
