  1. Thai believers in the supernatural power of the Kru Kai Kaew deity rocked social media this week after they reportedly sought puppies and kittens for a sacrificial ceremony in the pursuit of luck and prosperity. The practice has taken a dark turn as some followers hope to receive lucky lottery numbers in exchange for innocent lives. Kru Kai Kaew, portrayed as an anthropomorphic entity adorned with resplendent wings and gleaming golden talons, recently gained even more notoriety when a colossal sculpture of the deity caused a major traffic jam on Bangkok’s Rachadapisek Road. The statue’s towering height hindered its passage through an underpass, sparking rumours that this was a calculated move to seize public attention. The deity’s ascent to social media stardom led to the establishment of dedicated Facebook groups, where enthusiasts exchanged anecdotes, rituals, and experiences related to their devotion to Kru Kai Kaew. These digital communities buzzed with activity, thriving on the shared reverence for the entity. However, the atmosphere darkened when a cult member posted on one of these groups, soliciting puppies and kittens for a sacrificial rite to appease Kru Kai Kaew. This ritualistic act was intended to secure favour in return – the bestowing of lucky lottery numbers. Shockingly, some suggestions within these groups urged participants to multiply their sacrificial offerings in the quest for enhanced success. Disturbingly, one post even advised performing the sacrifice while the animal was still alive, right in front of the deity’s statue, to make their wishes come true. 3. An off-duty nurse, aided by railway police, performed life-saving CPR on a woman who collapsed at Chiang Mai Railway Station in northern Thailand. The woman’s relatives are overwhelmed with gratitude, describing the timely intervention as a miracle, stating if she had been delayed at the hospital, she would have been lost forever. According to railway police officer Narongsak Chaitham and his colleague Somsart Wandee, the incident occurred on the Wednesday morning of August 2 when they were overseeing passenger convenience on train number 13. Passenger Jittaphattana, a teacher in a private school in Chiang Mai, collapsed and her heart stopped while waiting for a pickup at Chiang Mai Railway Station, warranting immediate intervention. At that moment, a woman passerby identified herself as a nurse and came forward and applied an automated external defibrillator (AED) while performing CPR, which brought life back to Jittaphatna’s heart before an ambulance could transport her safely to McCormick Hospital, reported Sanook. Jittaphattana’s relatives thanked the railway police and managed to locate the kind-hearted nurse Waraphorn Thongtip. She works as a staff nurse at the Yan Neng Public Health Hospital in Saraphi District, Chiang Mai. Today, the 48 year old victim’s family travelled to the Chiang Mai Railway Police office, to thank them, also extending their gratitude to nurse Waraphorn with a basket of fruits. The moment they saw Waraphorn, the victim’s relatives hugged her with compassion. 9. Police arrested an Aussie man at a luxury accommodation in Phuket on August 10 after the foreigner fled a drug charge from his homeland to hide in Thailand. Phuket Provincial Immigration Police today held a press conference to report the successful arrest of the Australian, Robert Wainwright. The arrest was made on Thursday, August 10 near a luxury pool villa in the Rawai sub-district, Meaung district, Phuket province. Officers reported that the Australian authorities had recently executed Operation LESALAN, an investigative initiative aimed at the detection and apprehension of suspects in drug and firearm trafficking. However, some of the suspects, including Wainwright, managed to evade arrest. After conducting a further investigation into runaway suspects, the Australian authorities discovered Wainwright was hiding in Thailand. Wainwright reportedly entered Thailand on a student visa. To hide from the police, Wainwright avoided doing any financial transactions and let his Australian girlfriend do it for him. He also kept changing his accommodation to make it harder to track him down. Fortunately, eagle-eyed Thai police managed to trace him in the end. 10. Student barred from classes over political disagreements with school teacher In a Chon Buri school, one student's political disagreement with his teacher got him banned from history class. 11. A Chon Buri school student has reportedly been banned from attending history classes, due to political views that conflict with those of the teacher. The matter was brought to the office of the district’s primary education area by Yodchai Pungporn, a distant MP along with the child’s mother, who expressed concern over the impact this might have on the child’s educational progress. A secondary school student found himself forbidden to attend history classes after expressing a political viewpoint that clashed with the teacher’s. The mother deems the instructor’s actions as inappropriate, and quite possibly a violation of human rights, tantamount to bullying young citizens. The class ban also puts the educational future of the student at stake, potentially leading to a failure in the subject. The concerned mother had originally lodged a complaint in July, following which the MP facilitated a meeting between the school principal and the student’s parent. The aim was to request the principal’s intervention to resolve the issue. However, despite attempts to rectify the situation, no substantial progress has been made, indicating the teacher’s apparent lack of concern over the warning imparted by the management. As the mother related further, the disagreement stemmed from a contrast in political party preferences between the teacher and the student. Differences in opinion should naturally fall in the realm of personal respect, with no party imposing ideas on the other. 17. The public has been posting condolences left, right and centre after learning that avid art collector and former pop singer/composer turned Bangkok University Rector, Petch Osathanugrah has passed away at the age of 68. Teens of the ’90s are familiar with Petch for his hit song ‘I’m Just a Man’ (Mai Chai Phoo Wiset), which was a unique electronic pop number at that time. In business circles, he was likely well-known as the eldest son of Surat of the Osathanugrah family, one of Thailand’s conglomerates. However, his character and almost everything about him was miles away from the prototype of a rich kid and his frizzy hair made him almost weird in that era, at least compared to others. He was also a founder of Spa Advertising (now Spa-Hakuhodo), while his most recent role was as the Rector of Bangkok University, where he introduced numerous innovative approaches to education to align with the needs of today’s job market including a bold move to cooperate with the MasterClass platform to provide over 150 streamed classes to the students.
