A spate of illegal operations was brought into sharp focus, after a massage parlour known as Universe Massage in Phuket was raided and its owner nabbed due to operating without requisite permissions. The drive to crack down on such infringing operations headlined by the Patong Police continues in earnest, with this instance being the third in just over a week. The raid on Universe Massage, situated on Rat-U-Thit 200 Pi Road, was orchestrated around 9.30pm yesterday by Patong Police officers. Led by Police Captain Udon Phahulrat, they encountered and arrested a man cloaked by the name Anant. He has since been charged with managing a health establishment without legal permission. News of the police operation was relayed late on the day of the raid, confirming that this systematic crackdown on massage parlours that are operating illicitly is part of an ongoing campaign to clean up the tourist-frequented town of Phuket. The directive, aimed at preventing illicit activities and establishments without proper licensing, was issued by Patong Police Chief Police Colonel Sujin Nilbadee, in association with Patong Police Deputy Superintendents Pol. Lt. Col. Somporn Surin and Pol. Lt. Col. Wutthiwat Liang Boonjinda. In an unusual incident, over 500 monks peacefully gave way to a green snake that slithered into their temple meeting, ultimately cohabiting the space until the gathering’s conclusion in northern Thailand. The intriguing episode unfolded in a shared clip on social media at the Wat Jampa Temple in the Prakhon Chai district of Buriram province. The monks were convening for their annual meeting, known as the monk council or Pra Nwaga, simultaneously delivering teachings. Rather than evoking chaos amongst the religious men, they calmly moved aside for the snake to glide through without any form of hostility. Eventually, the green reptile sought refuge under the podium while one of the monks, Suthee Wachiraphajan, the assistant temple abbot of Phra Chetupon Vimolmangklararm, was still in the process of delivering teachings at the podium. While Suthee continued his discourse, he subtly mentioned the snake, indicating its probable search for a twig before it headed towards a smaller podium’s base. He asserted its presence as a good omen before carrying on with the religious conference. Throughout, the snake simply remained under the podium base. A 14 year old boy and his eight year old cousin sustained severe injuries after getting tangled in a hanging wire on their way home. One boy’s 35 year old mother Namjai Sa Lee detailed the horrific incident, which occurred in Mahapho, Kao Liao district, Nakhon Sawan on July 29. The two boys were knocked off a motorcycle by the wire, leading to a crash with a tree 10 metres away that left them with grievous injuries. Namjai initially thought the boys were simply involved in a motorcycle accident, but the sight of a large pool of blood and the absence of the duo at the scene led her to the realisation that something was amiss. The boys were already taken to the hospital by emergency services by the time she got there. A stray hanging wire that turned out to be a communication line, was the culprit behind the accident. They apparently hit the hanging wire and got snagged, causing the motorcycle to swerve uncontrollably, slamming them into the tree. Namjai explained the severity of the injuries. “The injuries are shocking. Especially my son. It’s as though he was strangled by the wire. It was so severe that we could almost see his windpipe. His hand was also cut through to the bone. There was so much blood that it didn’t stop flowing at the moment.” The villagers helped her examine the scene of the accident and even cut and kept a portion of the wire as evidence. Namjai, meanwhile, has had to nurse her son at the hospital for five full days, spending more than 13,000 baht on medical expenses. She was semi-naked, only clad in the lower half and a piece of cloth covered her injured head. Close to her body laid a grass-cutting machete and hoe. Following the incident, the perpetrator, 33 years old Teeraphan the deceased’s husband, attempted to escape in a white Honda CR-V. A 78 year old Thai monk from Rat Samakkhi Temple in Chon Buri urged police to track down a woman who swindled over 800,000 baht from him. The monk added that he will forgive her and stop the legal process if she presents herself to the police and take responsibility for her actions. The community leader, Yotsadhammo Puangsisang, accompanied the monk to the Plutaluang Police Station to file a complaint against the scammer on July 29. However, the case had not developed, so Yotsadhammo reached out to Channel 3 to spread his story and pressured the suspect. Yotsadhammo revealed to the media that the woman first asked for money from him in April last year. She made the monk feel sorry for her by saying she had been made bankrupt and lost everything in her life. The woman asked for money so she could travel back home to the central province of Chantaburi but did not have enough money to fill up her car with fuel. Yotsadhammo decided to support her. An unsettling report has emerged from Chanthaburi in eastern Thailand regarding a local man found dead under distressing circumstances five days ago. The 46 year old, Thanpong, lived alone, and it is believed that his body was in the room for five days before it was discovered. Police officer Phuriphat last night received a distress notification from the emergency rescue radio centre at the Bright Dharma Association, Chanthaburi. An adult male was reported to be lying dead in his room, located within the small settlement of Ko Kwang 4 in the Chanthaburi municipality. On arrival at the scene, the officials discovered a single-storey residence. In the bedroom, Thanpong’s naked body was found lying on his back on a bed. Beside him were shards of cloth, a water basin, and a wooden floor brush. Normal household possessions remained in the room, although a small amount of what appeared to be vomited blood was also present. The find raised questions which urged officials to collect the evidence for further processing. A next-door neighbour, 53 year old Wisut, was questioned for further insight into the incident. He told police officers that two individuals, the deceased and Ei, an 86 year old lady believed to be the aunt, were living in the residence at the time of the incident. Officers from the Crime Technology Investigation Department at Thong Thanee today were successful in their crackdown against this notorious gang in Mae Sai, Chiang Rai, arresting nine suspects and confiscating numerous incriminating items. The gang had two divisions, one responsible for pressing for money from their targets and another, acting as paid mule accounts. Among those arrested were: 20 year old Ploymani, 22 year old Alo, 20 year old Thitikan, and 19 year old Ardee, who constituted the money-pressing group. The mule brigade included: 20 year old Pimanmas, 19 year old Phanomwan, 20 year old Weerachai, 28 year old Siriporn, and 38 year old Thanaphon. Cash amounting to 1,058,620 baht, two cars worth 3.2 million baht, one motorcycle, two computers, 17 mobile phones, and numerous bank passbooks with ATM cards were seized. Into these accounts around 1.5 million baht had been deposited, in addition to other items, bringing the total cost of the seized goods to over 10 million baht. Recently, there have been reports of victims who were scammed by the call centre gang, posing as express private courier employees. The gang duped victims into believing they had committed a crime and could rectify their situation by making a transfer of funds. Thailand’s baht leads Asian currency downturn amid China’s economic worry Picture courtesy of Chiang Rai Times Asian currencies experienced a downturn yesterday, led by Thailand‘s baht, as concerns heighten surrounding the recovery status of the global economy’s second-largest player, China. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1303669-thailand’s-baht-leads-asian-currency-downturn-amid-china’s-economic-worry/ -
Asian currencies experienced a downturn yesterday, led by Thailand‘s baht, as concerns heighten surrounding the recovery status of the global economy’s second-largest player, China. The baht plunged by a substantial 0.8%, marking it as the largest depreciation against the US dollar in half a dozen weeks. Across the waters of offshore markets yesterday afternoon, it was changing hands at approximately 35.30 to the dollar. Growing anxieties stem from the July data on China’s industrial output and retail sales, which display a decelerating rate and lower-than-expected figures respectively. These trends bolster the already present batch of unsatisfying economic statistics. The idea that policymakers may indeed need to increase their support for the economy is gaining credence. Interestingly, policymakers in Beijing also announced their discontinuation of the release of statistics about youth unemployment, a figure which marched to a record high of 21.3% in June. Mirroring the ominous cloud hanging over the data release, the central bank of China, in a surprising move, cut significant policy interest rates for the second time in only three months just under an hour before. This starkly highlights the evaporating rebound from the post-Covid-19 economy. ING analysts said… “As we take a broader view of things, today’s policy decisions prove to be somewhat beneficial. They would aid in enhancing the debt-service abilities of local governments and property companies lagging in cash. But this isn’t a turning point of massive proportions, thus, we hesitate to believe that market sentiment will see a profound improvement based solely on this.” By Alex Morgan Caption: Picture courtesy of Chiang Rai Times Full Story: https://thethaiger.com/news/business/thailands-baht-leads-asian-currency-downturn-amid-chinas-economic-worry -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-08-15 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. A deputy House speaker, a Move Forward party MP, has landed in hot water over his online post showing him with a new craft beer, brewed in his hometown. Activist Srisuwan Janya filed a complaint on Tuesday with House speaker Wan Muhamad Noor Matha, who is also chairman of the House ethics committee, seeking an investigation into Padipat Suntiphada, an MP from Phitsanuloke. Srisuwan claims that, by posting an image of the craft beer can, Padipat clearly violated section 32 of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act, which prohibits the advertising of alcoholic beverages, as well as section 59 of the penal code. The offence carries a fine of not more than Bt50,000 and/or a jail term of not more than one year on conviction. In the next few days, Srisuwan said he will file a similar complaint with the National Anti-Corruption Commission and the Alcoholic Beverage Control Committee. Pheu Thai party deputy leader Phumtham Wechayachai is confident that the selection of the prime minister, with Srettha Thavisin as the party’s candidate, will be over in just one parliamentary joint sitting. He also said that the allocation of cabinet seats among coalition parties is secondary to the selection of the prime minister, which must be resolved first, adding that, once the prime minister is selected between August 18 and 22, the coalition parties will meet immediately to discuss the allocation of ministerial posts. Regarding the prospect of the Palang Pracharath joining the Pheu Thai-led coalition, Phumtham said that this issue is not as important as the mutual understanding of the two parties of the need to have a government formed without further delay. Department Of Special Investigation (DSI) officers yesterday arrested a 19 year old Thai university student for selling child pornography online at a condominium in Pathum Thani province near Bangkok. The Director of the DSI’s Technology and Information Litigation Division, Khemmachart Prakuyhongmanee, reported the successful operation to the media today. Khemmachart stated that officers received a tip-off about the online sale of child pornography from the condo and conducted a raid at the spot yesterday with a sniffer dog called Hidu, which was trained in the US to detect electronic devices. The dog led the DSI authorities to the room of a 19 year old suspect selling child pornography via a LINE application group chat. Officers discovered more than 5,000 child pornography files and found that there were over 200 child victims involved in the making of the content. Khemmachart reported that the suspect worked with another woman. The woman created an online profile using a beautiful picture and talked to the victims, who were mostly young boys aged under 18 years old.
