An investigating committee has advised the Election Commission (EC) to dismiss the alleged violation of election law charges against Pita Limjaroenrat, the leader of the Move Forward Party. The charges centered around accusations that Pita held shares in the media firm iTV while filing his candidacy for the May 14 general election. An EC official revealed that the committee’s investigation found insufficient evidence to conclusively prove that iTV was operational and generating income during the period when Pita submitted his election candidacy in early April. The committee underscored the requirement, as per Section 151 of the Election Act, for unambiguous and irrefutable proof of Pita’s continued ownership of shares in the media company in order to disqualify him from the election. Chiang Rai Police have arrested 41 year old drug addict in relation to an incident where the man reportedly threatened his parents with a knife to extract money for funding his drug habit. The incident occurred after his share of a 12-million baht lottery windfall had been exhausted by his substance abuse. Local police yesterday were informed of Sutthiphong’s act of aggression and intimidation towards his parents, attempting to coerce them for more money intended for drug purchases. Sutthiphong managed to evade police scrutiny initially, however, an arrest warrant was soon issued by the local court. Subsequently, the drug addict’s 43 year old wife, Penjamas, took him to Vieng Pao Pao Police Station. During the confession, he admitted to consuming one and a half tablets of an unidentified drug, resulting in a positive drug test at the Vieng Pao Pao Hospital, reported KhaoSod. An investigation into the case revealed that approximately two years ago, Sutthiphong’s parents won a first-prize lottery of 12 million baht (US$338,123). They distributed the winnings amongst their children, including Sutthiphong. However, Sutthiphong’s substance abuse consumed his share until it was exhausted. Bangkok’s Bang Rak district was jolted awake in the early hours as a fire broke out at a jewellery import-export company today. Fortunately, the blaze was contained before it could spread to the vault. The preliminary speculation points towards an electrical circuit malfunction as a possible cause. Around 12.10am today, Deputy Superintendent Patiwat Ruangphoeng of the Bang Rak Police Station rushed to the scene of the fire at the Diamrussa Co., Ltd., located in Surawongse Road’s Soi Pramot. Firefighters from Bang Rak were swiftly coordinated to douse the fire with three fire trucks being dispatched to the site at once. The affected building, a six-story commercial edifice housing the jewellery import-export business, emitted flames and smoke notably from the fifth floor. Firefighters were initially unable to penetrate the building due to stringent security measures and the absence of any residents inside. They had to reach out to the company’s owner to gain access and fight the fire raging inside. Before the owner arrived, preliminary efforts were made to control the fire from the outside of the building to prevent it from spreading. Upon arrival, the company owner, Supatra Pongsawatkul, assisted the firefighting personnel in hauling the fire hose into the building. They discovered that the origin of the fire was in a jewellery crafting room. A 61 year old Thai man turned himself into Mueang Nakhon Pathom Police Station after he raped a 20 year old Burmese girl in Nakhon Pathom province near Bangkok last month. The victim, 20 year old Arisa, filed a complaint with the police after the incident occurred on July 26. She explained that the rapist, 61 year old Wuttichai, was an employer of her father. They worked together in the Ratchaburi province while she lived and worked in the Nonthaburi province. On the day of the incident, Wuttichai informed Arisa that he would pick her up from her workplace, under the pretext of taking her to visit her younger sister at a foster home in Nakhon Pathom. Arisa’s initial compliance was rooted in the assumption that her father would be accompanying Wuttichai on the journey. However, as events unfolded, her father was absent from the car. According to Arisa, Wuttichai assured her he would collect her father from an alternate location. Trusting his words, she proceeded to travel alongside him. The course of events took an alarming turn as Wuttichai diverted from the route, stopping at a drugstore and restaurant before eventually arriving at a residence within the province. At the residence, Wuttichai revealed that he was tired and unable to continue driving. He told Arisa that he would take a rest at the house and urged Arisa to come inside the premises and rest. However, when Arisa entered, Wuttichai locked her in a room and sexually assaulted her. She screamed for help but no one heard her. She later requested to go to the bathroom where she sought an opportunity to reach out to her employer for help. A gripping incident on social media unfolded when a young woman posted an exchange with her heartless boss, where her requests for leave were repeatedly denied – even as her mother lay critically ill and eventually passed away. The woman had to navigate the harsh demands of her job when she was urgently needed at home. The online post narrated a conversation that highlighted the lack of empathy from the woman’s superior at work. It started with her seeking leave to get medication and later asking for time off when her mother’s condition worsened. However, her requests were refused, followed by questions about her possible resignation and orders to provide an official termination letter when her duties were sorted. The woman details the exchange, asking… “What did I do wrong? In such situations, should one not be considerate and understanding? Isn’t it too much?” She also shared screenshots of the chat that demonstrated her superior’s lack of compassion. The conversation after she had taken sick leave in the morning read… “Could I have more leave, my mother is not doing well, she may not survive today or tomorrow?” Her heartless supervisor responded with… “No!” By Samantha Rose Caption: Image via The Tennessean Full Story: https://thethaiger.com/news/national/heartless-boss-denies-leave-to-grieving-woman-shocking-exchange-goes-viral-in-thailand -- Thaiger 2023-08-17 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Chuwit urges Big Joke probe into Pheu Thai PM candidate’s tax scheme accusation Photo via Facebook/ ชูวิทย์ กมลวิศิษฎ์ A former Thai politician urged the Deputy Commissioner of the Royal Tha Police (RTP) to initiate an investigation into allegations levelled against the Pheu Thai Party’s prime ministerial candidate. A former Thai politician urged the Deputy Commissioner of the Royal Tha Police (RTP) to initiate an investigation into allegations levelled against the Pheu Thai Party’s prime ministerial candidate. After the Pheu Thai Party announced that they would propose Srettha Thavisin as their PM candidate, former politician and soapy king Chuwit Kamolvisit announced that he had evidence which could prove that Srettha did not meet the PM requirement and urged Surachate “Big Joke” Hakparn to investigate. Chuwit claims that Srettha, alongside his real estate development company, Sansiri, engaged in various actions aimed at minimising tax obligations. He then held press conferences to reveal the evidence he had on the allegations to the public. During the press conference, Chuwit claimed that Srettha and other relevant people fraudulently minimised tax payments from 521 million baht to only 59.2 million baht. Chuwit reckons Sansiri bought an expensive plot of land on Salasin Road in Bangkok for 4 million baht per square metre making the land the most expensive piece of real estate in all of Thailand. Twelve individuals jointly hold ownership of the plot meaning they had to pay about 521 million baht in taxes after the sale. Chuwit contended that Srettha and Sansiri masterminded a scheme in which the land was purchased separately from each owner, on different dates. This orchestration allowed each landowner to pay taxes at a notably reduced rate. Thai baht instability rises due to political unrest Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post Political unrest is heightening baht oscillations against the US dollar, as Thailand finds itself without a stable government, the head of the Bank Thailand asserts. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1303886-thai-baht-instability-rises-due-to-political-unrest/ -
Political unrest is heightening baht oscillations against the US dollar, as Thailand finds itself without a stable government, the head of the Bank Thailand asserts. This turbulence introduces a greater risk factor amongst investors who are observing the foreign exchange rate, particularly between the baht and the US dollar, in light of Thailand’s current political developments. Post Thailand’s General Election in May, political factions continue to bicker about the newly formed government. Sethaput Suthiwartnarueput, the central bank governor, at a seminar hosted by its southern region office yesterday, stated… “Given these underlying risks and vulnerabilities, the baht has witnessed irregular movements against the dollar. “The main factor driving the recent baht volatility is the movement of the US federal funds rate (the monetary policy of the US Federal Reserve). However, domestic political uncertainty also plays a significant role, contributing to the pressure on the baht’s changing value against the dollar.” Year-to-date, the baht has seen a depreciation of 9% against the US dollar, which surpasses the fluctuating value of the Malaysian ringgit, Indonesian rupiah, and the Philippine peso. In the Asian continent, it is common for Japan’s yen and South Korea’s won to experience greater volatility against the greenback when compared to regional currencies. Furthermore, the Chinese yuan also impacts the baht due to the significant business exposure between China and Thailand, spanning across sectors such as imports and exports, tourism and foreign direct investment, reports Bangkok Post. Adding to this, Sethaput pointed out that the local gold trade in Thailand also influences baht movements.
