  1. Thieves remain at large after stealing about 400,000 baht from a Krung Thai Bank ATM in front of Prachanukroh School in the southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat. The deputy manager of the Krung Thai Bank, Janjira Saelim, yesterday lodged a complaint at Tha Sala Police Station complaining that thieves had stolen money from the ATM in the early hours of the morning. Janjira added that the ATM had been replenished with 6.24 million baht a day prior to the crime. Police officers investigated the ATM and collected the thieves’ fingerprints left on the machine. Officers reported that the criminals opened the ATM’s money storage from the back of the machine. They used a gas-cutting torch to cut the back of the machine and then burned the inner parts of the machine to remove the cash. Janjira revealed that there was about 4.59 million baht left in the cash machine, adding that bank clients withdrew about 1.25 million in cash, so the thieves managed to steal about 397,000 baht from the ATM. Furthermore, the damages inflicted upon the ATM’s structure incurred a hefty cost of 250,000 baht. 7. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Island province of Phuket is seeking to become a low-carbon destination, with future development plans focusing on waste management and lowering greenhouse emissions to promote eco-tourism. According to Phuket Governor Narong Woonciew, provincial authorities recently held discussions with public and environmental agencies on food waste management and agreed to establish a systematic plan that integrates all sides to ensure maximum sustainability. In order to address the food waste issue, the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation will work with the Phuket municipality to promote waste management to local residents and businesses. Authorities plan to create a platform that collects data and information on excess waste which will be used to establish waste disposal plans with greater efficiency. According to data from 2019, Phuket emitted 3.1 million tonnes per year of carbon dioxide. Authorities are concerned about the increasing rate of emission, as the figure has been forecast to rise to around 4.6 million tonnes by 2030. A crucial factor attributing to this is Phuket’s failure to separate garbage, 50% of which is food waste. Officials stated that separating waste would be a cost-effective and environmentally friendly approach to waste disposal. Wattanapong Suksai, Director of the Phuket Provincial Natural Resources and Environment Office, said the office is working to lower greenhouse gas emissions and execute action plans to address climate change. He said that the province is working to curb greenhouse gasses, with the aim of lowering Phuket’s greenhouse gas output to 440,000 tonnes per year by 2030. 13. BANGKOK (NNT) - The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) is preparing to establish a new company dedicated to operating the forthcoming high-speed train routes in the northeastern region of the country, with the primary goal of enhancing Thailand’s railway links with China. Drawing inspiration from the existing SRT Electrified Train Co. Ltd, responsible for managing Bangkok’s Airport Rail Link and the SRT Red Line, the envisioned new company is expected to take on a similar operational structure. The Ministry of Transport is actively engaged in crafting the organizational blueprint for the prospective unit, with the expectation of finalizing the study’s outcomes by the end of 2023. The strategic timeline aims to ensure the new company’s establishment promptly thereafter, enabling it to be operational by the time China provides technological expertise and knowledge concerning high-speed trains in 11 specific areas to Thai personnel. This anticipated transfer of knowledge is projected to occur in the latter part of 2024. In parallel with this development, the SRT said the ongoing project, involving the creation of a 253-kilometer-long high-speed train track connecting Bangkok and Nakhon Ratchasima in the Northeast, has advanced significantly, nearing completion of approximately 24% of its total scope. The undertaking carries a price tag of 179 billion baht, commencing construction in 2017, and anticipates offering high-speed train services in its initial phase by 2027. Specific achievements include the successful completion of a 3.5-kilometer section between Klang Dong and Pang Asok stations in Nakhon Ratchasima. Furthermore, an 11-kilometer stretch connecting Sikhio and Kut Chik stations has surpassed 98% completion and is poised to finalize later this year. Construction works are also in progress across multiple segments spanning regions including Saraburi and Nakhon Ratchasima, which covers areas such as Muak Lek, Kaeng Khoi, and Lam Takhong.
