In an attempt to modernise and become more efficient, Thailand’s State Railway (SRT) has shifted its attention towards procuring electric trains as opposed to previously planned diesel locomotives. In the words of SRT’s head, Nirut Maneephan, the altered proposal has gained the green light from the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC), and the SRT modernisation plan with an unchanged fund allocation of 1.5 billion baht is all set to be presented to the new administration. Furthermore, Nirut noted that the SRT is also planning to add 182 new carriages to its fleet. An interesting SRT modernisation shift has been witnessed in their procurement method, with the SRT considering procedures such as financial or operating leasing – a common practice in the aviation business that the SRT is yet to put into action. Elaborating on the SRT modernisation matter, Nirut said… “The SRT has consulted the Public Debt Management Office at the Ministry of Finance to acquire new carriages without obtaining loans through benefit-sharing among manufacturers and sponsors. We have to make a well-rounded study to support our proposal to policymakers.” By Mitch Connor Caption: Photo courtesy of huahintoday.com #news Full Story: https://thethaiger.com/hot-news/transport/thailands-state-railway-shifts-gear-towards-electric-trains-plans-1-5-billion-baht-investment -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-06-29 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. A couple involved in an investment scam in Chiang Rai has been apprehended. The husband, a 36 year old former government official turned investment advisor, and his 37 year old wife, are accused of defrauding investors out of 24 million baht (US$672,457) through their company K1FX Trader Club. The arrests followed a warrant issued by the Nakhon Pathom court after multiple complaints were lodged against the couple. A police task force yesterday, comprising officials from various bureaus led by the Thai National Police’s Commissioner, Major General Thiti Saengsawang, carried out the arrests at a residence in Chiang Rai. The couple was wanted in connection with a warrant issued by the Nakhon Pathom court this year on charges of fraud and conspiracy to defraud the public. The husband is known under the names Ken, Kaothap, and Kanhok. The wife is known as Thanyachanok or Donut. The couple’s company K1FX Trader Club, operating under the banner of Ascension Wealth, had promised investors a minimum 5% monthly return on investment from forex trading while guaranteeing 100% capital protection through an investment insurance policy. This assurance enticed unwitting individuals to invest more than 24 million baht. However, victims found themselves unable to retrieve their funds when the broker that Ken used shut down. Denied access to their account information by Ken, the victims’ attempts to contact him became progressively difficult. Eventually, they received no returns and were unable to make contact, leading them to believe they had been defrauded, reported KhaoSod. The northern city of Chiang Mai has experienced intense demand for lottery numbers as locals seek out lucky digits ahead of Saturday’s draw. This surge in activity was observed at 9am today, across various locations including markets, transportation hubs, major streets, and key spots like the Chiang Mai Gate and Nong Hoy. The going rate for a single lottery ticket was primarily set at 100 baht (US$2.8), and collection bundles were priced between 110 to 120 baht (US$3 to US$3.3). The appeal of hot numbers was apparent, with a continual stream of people buying them from different stalls. Lottery vendor Pannee explained that the high ticket prices did not discourage the public from buying. She went on to explain that a ticket wholesaler known as Yipua would sell them to vendors at elevated prices ranging from 90 to 96 baht. As a consequence, vendors would then raise the retail price to 110 or 120 baht. The most popular numbers for this period were: 10, 28, 70, 71, 95, 00, 04, 65, 66, 79, and 97. Pannee further revealed additional numbers for consideration, linked to the 30th Prime Minister, Pita Limjaroenrat, born on September 5, 1970. At 42 to 43 years of age, the numbers 05, 23, 42, 43, 59, 523, and 376 were all projected as fortuitous. Additionally, the changing governance day on June 24, 1932, marking 91 years, was another source for potential lucky numbers, reported KhaoSod. A video has been widely shared on social media showing an irate youth attacking a mentally ill man with a stick in a fit of anger. The disturbing incident took place today near Praratchawong Police Station, at the mouth of the Talad canal in the Phra Nakhon district of Bangkok. The agitated young man’s outbursts have provoked discussions among viewers about the display of raw hostility. In the video (which was too disturbing to post in this article), the belligerent young man is shown violently assaulting a man presumed to have mental health issues. He seems to be uncontrollably livid, loudly complaining, and insinuating that the mentally unstable man initiated the attack, as he struck him with a long rod. Meanwhile, onlookers gathered to observe the altercation. They attempted to calm the temperament of the irked individual but to no avail. The situation only worsened as the angry man spiralled further into a rage-filled frenzy, boldly daring to face any consequences while calling himself ‘Satan.” His aggression towards the mentally unstable man continued unabated. The Tourism Authority of Thailand has set a target of 5.3 million visitors from China, generating revenue of 446 billion baht. This is a downgrade from their own predictions earlier this year of a robust return of Chinese tourists into Thailand. However, according to a Nation Thailand report, there are a number of challenges that must first be overcome if this target is to be met. One of the most significant is that Thailand is competing with several other destinations trying to woo Chinese tourists. A further complication is the ongoing recovery in the global aviation industry. There are still not enough flights to Thailand to meet demand, meaning some Chinese travellers have opted to visit other countries instead. But the airlines say they will cater for the demand but, at this time, the demand simply isn’t there. By Peter Roche Caption: Chinese tourists in Thailand prior to the Covid-19 pandemic. People living downstream of the Bhumibol and Sirikit dams have been advised to use water economically, as the levels in the reservoirs behind the two major dams are steadily falling, due to lack of rainfall upstream. According to Worapoj Worapong, director of the Bhumibol dam, the water in the reservoir is currently at 49.7% of its full capacity and the dam is discharging about 30 million cubic metres of water downstream for consumption and conservation of the ecological system. He said the water situation at the reservoir is better than last year, because of the accumulation of water from the previous years. #news Full Story: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/call-to-use-water-sparingly-as-levels-in-2-major-reservoirs-drop-steadily/ -- © Copyright Thai PBS 2023-06-29 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. The Thai lottery community is abuzz with anticipation for the July 1 draw as special numbers emerge from unexpected sources: from vehicle registrations of bigwigs visiting Samut Songkram, to the mystical Chinese calendar, and even the peculiar characteristics of animals. Delightfully, the Thai lottery continues to be as diverse and unpredictable as ever. Among the highlights is car registration mentioned during a visit of a prominent figure named Pitha to Samut Songkram. Pitha arrived in a white Toyota Majesty, registration number 1 นข9743, prompting many to take note of the number. His popularity is such that crowds gather merely to secure proximity to him. As another source of intriguing lottery numbers, the Chinese calendar also comes with its own set of unique numbers to look out for. TikTok user ‘nid8857’ shared five noteworthy entries: 650,76385,254,325,503. Then, there’s another group of people associating their lottery luck with former monk, Luang Pu Sang. Significant dates and numbers related to Luang Pu Sang include his birth date 01/09/2467, ordination date 01/06/2490, and the date and time of his death 19/06/2566 at 7.13pm. Fiery cables ignite chaos, but Bangkok pedestrians escape fire unscathed Video and pictures courtesy of Darren Lyons Shocked pedestrians looked on in horror as cables caught fire at lunchtime today outside KKP Tower in Bangkok. Shocked pedestrians looked on in horror as cables caught fire at lunchtime today outside KKP Tower in Bangkok. Fortunately, there were no casualties. Auxiliary firefighters dashed to the scene and quickly extinguished the fire as shocked lunchtime onlookers watched in awe as sparks turned into a blaze and rubber dripped dangerously onto the pavement below on Soi Sukhumvit 21, Khlong Toei Nuea, Wattana. One observer, Darren Lyons, admitted he was alarmed by the incident, adding that the capital’s hanging cables were an “accident waiting to happen.” The 37 year old Englishman said… “I was out buying lunch from a nearby market when the blaze sparked. It’s hardly surprising though. There are thousands of metres of hanging cables throughout Bangkok. It’s only a matter of time before they all catch fire. It’s an accident waiting to happen. “The government promised to bury all of the city’s cables almost 40 years ago and there they are, still hanging dangerously above our heads. It’s about time they fulfilled their promise.” The project to bury Bangkok’s hanging cables began in 1984. Since then about 60 kilometres of its 236 kilometres of cables have been buried.
