These events unfolded yesterday in the waters of the southern regions of Pattani and Nakhon Si Thammarat. Pol. Lt. Col. Nathapong Takaew, the deputy head of the Songkhla-based Marine Police Sub-division 7, reported today about the seizure of the first vessel. Approximately 80 nautical miles east of Songkhla’s navigation floating light, this boat, crewed by five crewmen, was discovered around 2pm trawling for sea cucumbers near Ko Losin island in Pattani. In a subsequent action soon after the initial seizure, a separate marine police unit apprehended another Vietnamese fishing vessel—the second capture for the day. At a location roughly 44 nautical miles east of Songkhla’s navigation floating light, near Ko Kra island in Nakhon Si Thammarat, this boat had six crew members on board. Following their capture, both boats were escorted to the marine police boat pier located in the Muang district of Songkhla province. Despite his defence, stating his lack of knowledge about the authenticity of these objects as they were procured from third parties, the charges still stand. The 53 year old suspect, Pharadon Wongwaiwit, claims he is incapable of refunding the victims due to his serious health conditions. The story surfaced when a member of the Facebook group with over 1,000 members complained. The group has its roots in discussions, exchanges, and sales of southern amulets, through which Pharadon had been selling his goods with a guarantee of authenticity and a full refund policy in case of counterfeit items. A victim who believed in this authenticity transferred a total of 15,000 baht (US$425) for an amulet. However, upon receipt, the amulet was discovered to be counterfeit, leading to demands for a refund, which Pharadon avoided and subsequently blocked the victim on Facebook, rendering further conversation impossible, reported KhaoSod. 14. BANGKOK (NNT) - The government and Bangkok Hospital have jointly launched a project to equip young people from the country’s southern border provinces with Arabic language skills. Deputy Government Spokesperson Ratchada Thanadirek said the initiative is part of the government’s strategy to enhance skills and employability in the Middle East, particularly in tourism, medical, and export industries. Ratchada further revealed that there’s a high demand for individuals with proficiency in Arabic, due to the strong ties between Thailand and the Middle East. This demand is expected to rise even further, given the country’s foreign policy targeting Middle Eastern countries. For the successful execution of this project, the government acknowledges the need for private sector participation. Hence, the government reached out to Bangkok Hospital, which serves a significant number of Arab patients. This opportunity is perfect to hone the Arabic language skills of the young trainees, as it provides extensive learning opportunities and real-world work experience. The hospital has expressed its eagerness to support the project and has set up an "Arabic Language Internship Program" for students. To facilitate the project’s operations, the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Center will act as the main coordinator with universities in Pattani, Narathiwat, Yala, and Fatoni, the Southern Private School Association, and representatives from the Arab world. The center will be responsible for coordinating the selection process for interested young people to join the program. Moreover, they will evaluate the results to refine the approach and foster further collaboration with other private sector entities to expand opportunities for the youth and meet the human resource demands in the business sector. 18. Four Thai nationals will face charges in a Malaysian court on Friday over the 2015 discovery of mass graves and suspected human trafficking camps at the country’s border with Thailand, Malaysia‘s home affairs minister said. The dense forests of southern Thailand and northern Malaysia have been a major stop-off point for smugglers bringing people to Southeast Asia by boat – most of them Rohingya Muslims fleeing persecution in Myanmar and squalid refugee camps in Bangladesh. The discovery of camps and graves on the Thai side of the border in 2015 led authorities in Thailand to crack down on people smugglers, but prompted traffickers to abandon at sea thousands of migrants making their way to the border area in overcrowded boats.
