US Ambassador to Thailand Robert Godec had an opportunity to engage with Thai and foreign media today, where he expressed his delight at the first-ever shipment of Thai pomelos reaching the United States. This is a milestone that comes 190 years into the diplomatic ties between the two countries. The first export lot of the popular citrus fruits was dispatched last night. Godec is admittedly a fan of the pomelo, with a fondness for both the white-fleshed and red-fleshed versions. Godec said… “I’ll tell you, I’m very happy to see the first pomelo exports to the United States. Pomelo! I love pomelo, I like both white and red. It’s delicious. Sent to celebrate 190 years.” Godec holds hope that Americans will have the chance to savour the taste of pomelos from this consignment. Moreover, Thailand has previously exported many agricultural products, such as rice, shrimp, and different types of fruit, to the USA. The US Embassy has been working diligently to facilitate more exports from Thailand by navigating health checks, pest inspections, and various other procedures, reported Sanook. In an incident that sparked an online debate, a young Thai woman reported a harrowing experience involving a taxi service ordered via a mobile application. Throughout the journey, the driver allegedly behaved inappropriately, including asking to visit her home, requesting contact information, and proposing an outing together. Following the incident, which took place yesterday, the woman shared a video recounting her experience on TikTok. The video stirred an array of public reactions, with numerous comments suggesting ways to handle the situation, should it ever occur again. However, several commenters were quick to criticise the woman’s laughter during her refusal, suggesting it may have encouraged the driver to continue his inappropriate behaviour, assuming she was tolerating it. Responding to these suggestions, the woman clarified that her decision to laugh and respond to the relentless harassment was out of fear. She added that since it was not a traditional taxi she had boarded, but a service requested through an app, she felt even more trapped, reported KhaoSod. A university student tragically lost his life this morning when his car veered off the road, colliding with a barrier on a highway in Chanthaburi, East Thailand. The unfortunate incident also left the manager of the local Social Security Office injured and the victim’s family grieving. A routine trip turned disastrous for the 20 year old university student, when his car veered off its lane on a winding road, hitting a barrier, and resulting in his instantaneous death. The heart-wrenching event unfurled on the Tha Chalap highway near the passage up to Yothanimit Temple in the Mueang district of Chanthaburi province. The fated car was a Honda Civic, with a Bangkok registration plate ฌฮ2891, found wrecked and blocking the road. The other party in the crash, identified as Kittima, was found with minor injuries and bruises across her body. She received immediate assistance from officials and was promptly transported to the Prapokklao Hospital. Economic disparity in Thailand widens, agricultural sector hit hardest Photo Courtesy of The Foreign Photographer, Flickr The age-old struggle with economic disparity continues to cast a shadow on Thailand’s society as inequality widens, particularly in the agricultural sector, which sees roughly 6% to 8% of its populace remaining below the poverty line. According to a recent study by the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO), this disparity has been fuelled by multiple factors, including the move to a digital economy, an ageing society, post-Covid-19 economic recovery speed, and the burning issue of climate change. The age-old struggle with economic disparity continues to cast a shadow on Thailand’s society as inequality widens, particularly in the agricultural sector, which sees roughly 6% to 8% of its populace remaining below the poverty line. According to a recent study by the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO), this disparity has been fuelled by multiple factors, including the move to a digital economy, an ageing society, post-Covid-19 economic recovery speed, and the burning issue of climate change. TPSO’s director-general, Poonpong Naiyanapakorn, acknowledges that while the nation has experienced consistent economic growth, the distribution of that wealth remains a significant issue. The GDP enlarged from 7.7 trillion baht in 2008 to 10.2 trillion baht in 2021, yet economic inequality remained constant. Restating the United Nations’ (UN) sustainable development goals, Poonpong stressed the importance of both public and private sectors working cohesively to mitigate the economic disparity issue, which threatens the stability of Thailand’s societal and economic evolution. Historically, the poverty-stricken population made up 65% in 1988, decreasing to 6.3% in 2021. Even then, the past ten years (2011 to 2021) have shown no significant reduction. Surprisingly, about 11% of households whose main income is from agriculture reside below the poverty line, drawing their line at an income of 2,802 baht per month per person. When juxtaposed with ASEAN neighbours via the Gini coefficient, a concept to measure income inequality, Thailand finds companies in nations like Indonesia and Vietnam. However, wealth distribution is more balanced with a low economic disparity in developed East Asian countries like Japan and South Korea than in Thailand, reported Bangkok Post. The study reveals socio-economic transformations such as the shift to a digital economy, growth of platform-based economies, adoption of labour-replacing technologies, and large-scale data processing to be principal drivers of economic disparity within the country. While these evolutionary steps provide opportunities for those proficient in technology, they concurrently pose challenges for the technologically disadvantaged, thereby adding to economic disparity. A 44 year old woman was arrested by the cybercrime division of the Thai Police today for her alleged involvement in a fraud operation that lost victims over 1 million baht. The operation comprised a gang operating call centres, which conned their victims into revealing sensitive banking information. The call centres duped victims by pretending to be bank employees or police officers. The scammers would contact unsuspecting victims, posing as employees from various banks. They would then inform victims that their personal information was being abused to open and use credit cards, which had impending payments. To report the cybercrime incident, the scammers instructed victims to report the situation online. Once online, the victims were connected to the fraudsters posing as police officers from the Mueang Buriram Police Station. Following this, the gang instructed the victims to add a contact named “Mueang Buriram Police Station” on a messaging app, Line. They then facilitated conversations between the victim and the individual posing as the Director of Mueang Chiang Rai Police Station. This successfully tricked the victims into believing that the situation was indeed legitimate, reported KhaoSod.
