  1. Thailand’s House of Representatives is scheduled to hold its first meeting on July 4th, to elect the House speaker and two deputies, but the two major parties, Move Forward and Pheu Thai, are yet to settle on which of them will get the speakership. Move Forward has already decided to nominate Padipat Suntiphada, while the Pheu Thai party is yet to choose its candidate, although it is speculated that Suchart Tancharoen will be nominated in case the two parties cannot resolve the matter before July 4th. According to the Constitution, every MP is qualified to become the House speaker, as there is no law specifying minimum age or previous experience. Despite there being more than 90,000 Myanmar refugees in Thailand, the Thai government does not yet conduct Refugee Status Determination and has refused to use the description ‘refugee’ for those fleeing political conflict. Not using the term officially makes undocumented refugees illegal, deprives them of their rights and some are even sent to detention centres. To practice a more humane approach in helping refugees, there is a need to shine a light on the issues. Various entities, including law professors, people formerly in authority, humanitarian workers and representatives of political parties, shared suggestions and assessments regarding the crisis during the “Myanmar Refugees Policy Recommendation” talk at ThaiPBS. 9. In a tale of family dynamics gone awry, a 93 year old woman accused her 53 year old granddaughter of stealing two winning government-issued lottery scratch cards worth a total of 12 million baht (US$340,000). The case arose after an investigation by the Lottery Department, which included examining the original stubs of three books of tickets. However, the department confirmed that none of the stubs matched the winning numbers. Jee Chaowangyen originally reported her granddaughter-in-law, Saengthong, to officers at Nong Prue Police Station, Kanchanaburi. She claimed that Saengthong, who lived nearby, had stolen her lottery tickets that won the first-place prize in the lottery draw on May 2. Police summoned Saengthong, along with the lottery seller and others involved in the incident, to give statements, and presented three ticket books for sold lottery tickets to the Lottery Department for inspection. On June 27, Saengthong revealed that the police received a reply from the Lottery Department confirming that the three lottery stubs submitted for verification did not match the winning number of the top prize ticket. This confirmation vindicated Saengthong from accusations made by Jee, her mother-in-law, asserting that the theft claims were unfounded, reported KhaoSod. “I will lodge a complaint against mother-in-law Jee at the Nong Prue Police Station since her allegations have tarnished my reputation and caused hardship,” Saengthong said. She added that since the news spread, she had been ostracised by their community and faced constant questioning about the alleged theft. The suspects, both denying the charges so far, were apprehended at a regional court and reputable hotel. One individual confessed at around 9am today. Police led by Lieutenant Colonel Montri Thedkhan ordered the apprehension of the individuals. With assistance from regional police in Yala province, they managed to arrest 31 year old Ibroheng, and 38 year old Anurak. These individuals were accused of jointly restraining and detaining victims to extort ransoms, causing victims harm, and torturing others, violating the penal code. Ibroheng was arrested in front of the Yala Provincial Court while Anurak was caught in front of a hotel in Yala City. This string of arrests came as a consequence of an operation launched on June 25. Dubbed ‘Khon Kaen Nara hunting closure of brutal ransom gang account,’ the operation was aimed at apprehending the suspects operating in Yala, Narathiwat, and Khon Kaen provinces on behalf of northeastern drug traffickers to abduct and extort ransoms from drug debtors, reported KhaoSod. The initial operation resulted in the capture of five individuals, which expanded to include Ibroheng and Anurak, who played crucial roles in holding the victims captive and torturing them. After gathering evidence and talking to witnesses, they finally managed to capture the two. 19. A road rage incident escalated on Pattanakan Road in Bangkok last week, when two young motorcyclists aggressively pursued and damaged a pickup truck, leaving the 39 year old driver shocked and distressed. He said that this type of behaviour presents a societal risk and has now been shared on social media. The disagreement started when the driver, Nattawat, was driving his Isuzu pickup with his wife and daughter. A motorcycle overtook him on the right, a move inappropriate for the location. Concerned, Nattawat honked twice to alert the bikers but carried on, not anticipating that they would follow him to Triam Udom School. “Then they smashed the window,” he said, pointing at the damaged left side mirror of the pick-up. This marked the start of a horrifying few moments of road rage for the family, which was captured on video by Nattawat’s daughter from inside the car. In the heat of the situation, the young motorists honked before overtaking Nattawat on the left and using a bottle to strike his mirror, shattering the glass. 21. In commemoration of World Drug Day, a series of events unfolded yesterday in Phuket, supervised by government authorities to fortify global standing against drug abuse. World Drug Day, also known as International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, is a global observance brought to light by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, held every year on June 26, to spur action and collaboration towards a society free of substance misuse and raise drug awareness. Phuket Government Center Auditorium served as the stage for one such event presided over by Anupap Rodkwan Yodrabam, Phuket Vice Governor. The drug awareness event, under the banner “Phuket Provincial Office joins Thai forces to stop drug threats with a declaration of intent and combine cleaning power,” cumulated in a mass pledge taken by officials, students, and public members alike under the theme, “Phuket United, Power of Thailand.” The vice governor read a speech prepared by caretaker Prime Minister, General Prayut Chan-o-cha. Following the pledge, participants moved to Suan Luang or King Rama IX Park for a ‘Big Cleaning Day,’ a park clean-up initiative to tackle litter. Undeterred, officials and law enforcement continued advocating and intervening in drug-related activities, as noted by Phuket’s Public Relations Department. According to a departmental report, substances most frequently seized during arrests include methamphetamine, known locally as Yaba, followed by crystal meth or ‘ya ice,’ and cocaine. Among tourists, cocaine and alprazolam, commonly taken in combination with marijuana, were the drugs most often encountered. This information reinforces the importance of drug awareness campaigns and education. 23. A Thai durian middleman accused the Aranyaprathet Customs House in the Isaan province of Sa Kaeo of stealing durians worth 1.8 million baht. The story of the durian middleman caught fire on Thai social media on Sunday, June 25. According to several posts on Facebook, the middleman complained that the customs wrongly blamed him for illegally importing durians from Cambodia. The middleman insists that he had bought approximately eight tons of durians from a local plantation in the northeastern province of Si Sakate. He explained that he hired a truck driver to transfer the durian from the Si Sakate to the central province of Chantaburi for export. However, customs officers informed the driver that the durians were illegally imported and must be seized. The middleman then visited the Aranyaprathet Customs House to retrieve the durian but found that his products were all sold by the authorities. He claimed that some officers showed him a video that all of the durians were resold to other government departments in the province. Many Thai citizens criticised the authorities for their wrongdoings and demanded an explanation from Thai Customs. Officers managed to apprehend the man, whose identity was not reported. The man insisted that he was a journalist and came to Parliament to take pictures for his news articles. He wore an official press pass card with a strip that displayed a Parliament logo on it. However, his press card had expired and he could not present the permission document given by the Parliament authorities. According to the victim, the man was a former journalist from the Public Relations Department of Thailand. His press card was valid from September 2, 2010, to September 1, 2011.
