  1. In preparation for local business expansion, HSBC Thailand is working to raise additional funds and secure a new licence, in line with the nation’s economic growth. The bank’s capital is set to increase by 3.1 billion baht, reaching 25.7 billion, according to chief executive Giorgio Gamba. Furthermore, HSBC Thailand is seeking a new business licence from the regulator to bolster its existing operations, which span wholesale banking, market and securities services, and private banking. The bank’s primary clientele consists of high net worth individuals with a minimum of US$2 million in assets under management, as well as local and international corporations. By 2023, HSBC Thailand aims to achieve significant business growth, in line with the projected GDP growth of both Thailand and the Asean region. Gamba stated that the bank anticipates economic growth in Asean countries to range between 2.1% and 5.8%, while Thailand’s GDP growth is estimated at 4.1%. This growth is expected to be primarily driven by the recovery of the tourism sector and increased domestic demand for private consumption and foreign direct investment. For its wholesale banking business, HSBC Thailand is focusing on local firms looking to expand overseas and international investors interested in the Thai market. The bank provides a comprehensive suite of financial services and solutions for both inbound and outbound investments, supported by its global presence. “As Thailand is a regional hub and HSBC Thailand has long-term experience and business expertise, we are aiming to maintain the No.1 position for inbound international business in the Thai market,” Gamba said. “The bank also plans to expand outbound investment.” By Alex Morgan Caption: Image via Facebook, Worrapol Pakdeevijitr Full Story: https://thethaiger.com/news/business/hsbc-thailand-seeks-licence-raises-capital-for-local-business-expansion -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-06-02 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 5. Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra is determined to return to Thailand in July, after about 17 years of living in exile, regardless of the risk that he will be forced to serve the 10-year prison term from which he fled. His birthday is on July 26th. In a recent interview, recorded in Singapore, Thaksin reiterated his plan to return to Thailand, adding “I have said before and have reconfirmed that. I am waiting for Ung Ing (Paetongtarn, his daughter) to set the date, the timing.” He said that he wants to be able to care for his seven grandchildren, to relieve the burden on their parents, so they can focus on work. According to extracts from the interview, when asked whether he may become prime minister again, Thaksin claimed that he is too old to play politics, adding “It is beyond my era. This is the era of the new generation, not an era of the old people. We old people can offer advice to, but not force (the new generation) because we cannot catch up with them. We old people may understand the children, but it is like the understanding of English by people who learned English in Thailand, who are no match for those who grew up abroad and who are more proficient in the language.” Full Story: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/thaksin-says-he-will-return-to-thailand-in-july-despite-potential-consequences/ -- © Copyright Thai PBS 2023-06-02 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. A distressed Thai couple residing in the Isaan province of Udon Thani made an urgent appeal to the Thai authorities, pleading for financial aid of 100,000 baht to rescue their daughter from a personal nightmare in China. The couple, identified as 52 year-old Man Duangnate and 55 year old Manee Duangnate, shared their heart-wrenching story with ThaiRath, unveiling the nightmarish circumstances their 31 year old daughter, Nongnuch Duangnate, has endured after escaping from an abusive marriage with a Chinese man who held her captive in Beijing for three years. Nongnuch’s parents disclosed that their daughter, having divorced her first husband, relocated from Udon Thani province to Pattaya, where she found employment in a massage shop. However, in 2019, her life took a distressing turn when she was introduced to a 32 year old Chinese man named Wei Laing Jin through a mutual acquaintance. The connection between Nongnuch and Wei grew rapidly, leading them to tie the knot in August of the same year. Soon after their marriage, Nongnuch relocated to Beijing to reside with her new husband. However, a mere two months into their marital journey, Nongnuch reached out to her parents, sharing the agonising truth that she was suffering abuse at the hands of her spouse. Determined to escape her torment, Nongnuch fled from her husband’s residence and filed a complaint with the local police. 9. A lorry transporting Chinese cabbages plunged 80 metres into a ravine in Chiang Mai, leaving the driver trapped for two days and two nights. Miraculously, he survived by eating the cabbages before a cattle herder found him yesterday. In a dramatic rescue operation, emergency responders arrived on the scene at Huay Phak Kut curve in Mae Suek sub-district of Chiang Mai’s Mae Chaem district, on Highway No. 1263 between Khun Yuam and Mae Chaem. The incident took place approximately 190 kilometres from Chiang Mai City. Attempts to save the injured individual, who had been stuck in the six-wheeler lorry for over two days and two nights, required more than 30 minutes and involved cutting tools and rope equipment. Throughout the ordeal, the driver was sustained by the Chinese cabbages he was transporting. It was by chance that the cattle herder came across the scene and alerted the driver’s neighbours, who subsequently contacted the authorities. It is believed that the accident occurred due to a brake system failure, which caused the lorry to lose control and plunge into the deep ravine. 11. A 27 year old Myanmar fisherman tragically drowned in the Mae Klong River after he slipped while walking on a wet dock in Thailand’s central Samut Songkhram province. Despite challenging conditions, rescue teams found the body after an extensive four-hour search. Yesterday at 3pm, friends of the lost fisherman conducted a floating pillow ceremony, a ceremony that locals believed would help locate the body. Rescue officers from the Saeng Benjatham Foundation in Samut Songkhram were alerted about the incident and immediately sent a team of divers to search the area near the docks at Laem Yai subdistrict. Search efforts were complicated due to high tides causing the water to reach a depth of 8 metres, and strong currents. The rescue team had to carefully assess the situation at various stages to guarantee the safety of the divers. It wasn’t until 8.42 pm that they finally discovered the lifeless body and coordinated with the police to investigate the scene. However, they never received the fruits they ordered, and the couple deactivated the Facebook page when attempts were made to reach them. Law enforcement has discovered 10 warrants for the couple’s arrest across the country. Authorities managed to arrest Anon Maneephan and Chiraphat Chaleowai at their residence in Nong Khae district of the central Saraburi province. It was revealed that the couple posted advertisements for authentic Rayong Monthong Durians on Facebook, priced between 130 to 150 baht (US$4) per kilogram, and accompanied by attractive images of the fruit in various quantities to win buyers’ trust. Once customers had placed orders, the suspects instructed them to transfer money as a deposit for the durians but failed to deliver any of the products. In an interrogation, Chiraphat confessed that in 2021, she and her husband ran a legitimate online durian-selling business, but at one point, they ran out of stock and continued to accept orders. As customers started to demand refunds or the promised durians, the couple found themselves unable to fulfil the orders and opted to deceive and evade communication with the complainants. The group met with deputy police chief Surachat Hakparn, requesting that he monitor Nakhon Pathom Police Station’s progress on the case. The family had reportedly filed an initial complaint and was informed that a warrant had been issued for the assailant’s arrest. However, the police station later informed the family that they were unaware of his whereabouts and that high costs were incurred in this arrest. The family was further told to engage the services of another police department for assistance in arresting the step-grandfather, which required a fee of 10,000 baht (US$290). Gun questioned if the course of justice required payment and whether the alleged perpetrator would be arrested if the girl could not afford the fee. Expressing his disappointment with the situation, he insisted that he had dealt with several cases of children’s rights violations and never encountered such a fee for justice. 21. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt revealed that a Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) civil engineer attempted to solicit a 300,000 baht bribe from a construction company. The governor stands firm to take appropriate action by dismissing the corrupt officer. Chadchart together with the chiefs of 50 districts in Bangkok had a meeting yesterday at 8.30am. During the meeting, the governor stressed the importance of transparency and seized the opportunity to address the recent corruption case. Chadchart said… “We got a lot of complaints about corruption. For example, yesterday, from an officer from the BMA Public Work Section. The leader was my friend. This should never have occurred. According to the law, the construction company agreed to pay the BMA a fee of 50,000 baht. However, the civil engineer, exceeding his authority, demanded a staggering 300,000 baht. I know who he is, and I have evidence. He should be fired. If not, people will see that we cannot improve the corruption situation.” The 57 year old Chadchart also emphasised each district chief to monitor their team members. He said… “The district chief should not ignore corruption within the teams. If your team members have erred, you must accept it and fulfil your responsibilities. I do not seek to lay blame on the district chiefs. I simply want to highlight the importance of leaders looking after their team members. I am pretty worried about the corruption issue.” By Petch Petpailin Caption: Photo via Facebook/ กรุงเทพมหานคร Full Story: https://thethaiger.com/hot-news/crime/chadchart-exposes-bangkok-curruption-civil-engineer-demands-300000-baht-bribe -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-06-02 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 23. Exhibition organiser RX Tradex is gearing up to facilitate business matching deals worth an estimated 6 billion baht during the Manufacturing Expo 2023, which is set to take place later this month in Bangkok. The event will showcase new Thai manufacturing trends and is anticipated to boost investment in the country, according to Varaporn Dhamcharee, the managing director of RX Tradex. She noted that the reopening of the country and the easing of Covid-19 restrictions have had a positive impact on the domestic economy and business sentiment. The government’s full reopening of the country in July last year led to increased economic activity, particularly in the tourism and service sectors. The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) reported improved sales for entrepreneurs in industries related to tourism, driven by an increase in foreign tourist arrivals. In April, the manufacturing of malt and malt-derived alcohol saw a 17.5% year-on-year increase, as the higher number of tourists and the Songkran festival boosted domestic consumption, according to the Office of Industrial Economics. RX Tradex is optimistic that the four-day Manufacturing Expo will help maintain the economic recovery momentum. Scheduled to take place from June 21-24 at Bitec Bang Na, the event aims to surpass last year’s business matching deals, which totalled 5 billion baht. This year’s expo, featuring the latest technologies in the industrial sector, is expected to attract companies from 30 countries, reported Bangkok Post.
