  8. BANGKOK (NNT) - Hospitals under the supervision of the Department of Medical Services (DMS) in Bangkok have confirmed that they still have sufficient capacity to accommodate more COVID-19 patients. DMS Director-General Dr Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn confirmed that just over 22% of the beds in these hospitals are currently occupied. During a recent meeting, Dr Thongchai emphasized that although there has been a surge in COVID infections following the start of the new school semester, most patients experience mild or no symptoms and can be treated at home. He noted, however, that there has been an increase in the number of patients with acute respiratory infections (ARI) seeking treatment at hospitals. In response, hospitals have implemented after-hours services and separate screening areas within emergency wards to cater to these patients while keeping them separate from others. At present, hospitals under the Department of Medical Services are currently treating around 2,500 COVID-19 patients - an occupancy rate of 22.41%. Dr Thongchai reassured the public that the department’s hospitals possess ample beds and medical supplies to accommodate more cases, as well as other patients requiring medical attention under normal circumstances. Medical facilities under the Department of Medical Services include Lerdsin, Rajavithi, Nopparat Rajathanee and the Central Chest Institute of Thailand. 10. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rain warning for various regions of the country throughout the week, urging residents to stay vigilant of changes in weather patterns. Downpours are expected to affect the lower Northern, Northeastern, Central, Eastern and Southern regions, potentially leading to flash floods and runoff in low-lying and steep areas. According to the department, heavy rainfall can be attributed to a strong southwest monsoon and a low-pressure trough that is stretching from lower Vietnam, passing through Thailand and extending to Myanmar. The impact of these weather systems necessitates caution and preparedness among residents in affected areas. The department has advised small boats in the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea to remain ashore until Tuesday (30 May), given anticipated adverse weather conditions. Looking ahead, from May 31 to June 3, the strong southwest monsoon is projected to persist, covering the Andaman Sea, the southern mainland and the Gulf of Thailand. Heavy rain is subsequently anticipated in certain areas of the Central Plains, as well as in the East and South of Thailand. The department has also reported that Typhoon Mawar, currently located approximately some 600-700 kilometers east of Luzon in the Philippines, is moving in a westward direction. However, it is so far expected to veer towards Taiwan and not directly impact Thailand. Residents are urged to stay informed and up-to-date on the latest weather forecasts and advisories, follow any instructions or precautions issued by local authorities, and take necessary measures to ensure their safety during this period of inclement weather. 12. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives has announced that the United States and Australia have given the green light to import Thai pomelos and cooked ducks, respectively. These significant breakthroughs come after years of negotiations and are expected to open up new avenues for Thai agricultural exports. Agriculture Department Director-General Rapeepat Chantarasriwong revealed that the U.S. has approved the import of irradiated fresh pomelos from Thailand for the first time and without any restrictions on strains. This marks the eighth Thai fruit to receive U.S. import approval, following the successful endorsements of Thai mango, mangosteen, rambutan, longan, lychee, pineapple and dragon fruit. Rapeepat added that the initial delivery of Thai pomelos to the U.S. is expected to take place next month via air transport. To meet the US import requirements, Thai pomelos must adhere to Good Agricultural Practice and Good Manufacturing Practices standards. Thailand currently exports fresh pomelos to 30 countries, with China and Malaysia serving as primary markets. In 2022, Thailand exported approximately 1 million tonnes of pomelos valued at about 45 million baht. Meanwhile, Prayoon Insakul, Permanent Secretary for Agriculture and Cooperatives, revealed that Australia agreed to import cooked ducks from Thailand. The approval from Australia’s Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry came into effect on May 16. Move Forward party list MP-elect Wiroj Lakkhanaadisorn, who revealed the problem, claims that stickers on the windscreens of overloaded trucks meant that the trucks’ operators had paid bribes, so that their trucks would not be inspected or weighed. In a spree of audacious thefts, an ex-convict, released from prison a mere six months ago, targeted and plundered over 100,000 baht from 27 mobile top-up kiosks in Chaiyaphum province, located in the northeastern part of Thailand. The crime wave came to light when the owner of a local grocery store filed a complaint with Mueng Chaiyaphum Police Station on May 5. After reviewing security camera footage, it became evident that a cunning thief had looted the money from the owner’s kiosk, effortlessly gaining access using a skeleton key. As the investigation unfolded, numerous other victims stepped forward, reporting similar incidents where the thief had stolen money from their top-up kiosks. Shockingly, 27 kiosks fell victim to the thief, resulting in a collective loss surpassing 100,000 baht. Even the presence of security cameras did not deter the brazen criminal. Thanks to the invaluable CCTV footage, diligent officers managed to identify the perpetrator as 31 year old Thanayut Plusong. In a successful operation, he was apprehended this morning and swiftly brought in to reenact the crimes.
