  2. BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand has been selected by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank as the host country for their annual joint meeting in 2026. The decision was made after Thailand was evaluated by the World Bank in December 2020. According to Finance Minister Arkhom Tempittayapaisith, Thailand was among ten countries that had expressed an interest in hosting the meeting. The joint meeting is expected to attract about 12,000 participants from all over the world. Arkhom said the meeting is an opportunity for finance ministers from the World Bank’s 189 member countries and central bank governors from the IMF’s 190 member countries to discuss global economic and financial situations, poverty reduction, job creation, climate change, digital economic transition, and sustainable economic growth through collaboration. Arkhom added that the gathering would also enable Thailand to promote economic cooperation in the region and demonstrate its readiness to host international events. Furthermore, the meeting would allow the country to play a crucial role in supporting international financial institutions’ operations. The event takes place in October each year and provides a platform for member countries to share policies and developments that benefit their countries. Thailand will also host the annual meetings of the boards of governors of the World Bank Group and the IMF in 2026. Morocco will host this year’s annual meeting, while Washington is set to host the meetings in 2024 and 2025. The last time Bangkok hosted the annual meeting was in 1991. The parallel meetings will take place during the joint meeting between member countries and leading international financial institutions. 4. BANGKOK (NNT) - India’s ambassador to Thailand, Nagesh Singh, has urged Thailand to increase economic cooperation and bilateral relations with India. The Indian ambassador encouraged Thailand to invest more in India, highlighting its large market size and dynamic economy. He also proposed that both countries could link their digital payment systems, India’s United Payment Interface (UPI) with Thailand’s PromptPay, to facilitate transactions. Singh made these comments at "The Golden Decade for India" forum, organized by the India-Thai Chamber of Commerce held in Bangkok. During the forum, Singh outlined India’s economic performance, stating that India has been among the fastest-growing economies in the world for the last two decades. Thailand is India’s fifth-largest trading partner within the bloc, behind Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam. Singh called for increased investment between the two countries, with a focus on sectors such as automobiles, food products, and electronic goods. Last year, India overtook the UK to become the world’s fifth-largest economy. The country’s GDP is expected to double from its current value of $3.4 trillion to $8.5 trillion over the next decade, making it the world’s third-largest economy. India is expected to account for 20% of total global GDP growth during this period, adding over $400 billion (13.7 trillion baht) to its GDP every year, second only to the US and China. People visited Yala train market in numbers this morning to prepare raw materials for cooking a feast for the family. Sellers had prepared a large amount of the usual food items for Eid al-Fitr. Prices of the items were mostly unchanged although a few items have seen modest price rises. Throughout downtown Yala, the police were facilitating traffic in the vicinities of markets in anticipation of the busy shopping morning. Parts of the police force were handling security, in an effort to deter incidents by ill-intentioned groups. Eid al-Fitr generally involves a feast marking the end of the month-long Ramadan fasting. The date is popularly called Hari Rayo in the southern border provinces of Thailand. The Sheikhul Islam Office has announced that Muslim Thais check for a sighting of the moon yesterday (20 April) after sunset so that the declaration of Eid al-Fitr can proceed smoothly. A sighting of the moon should be reported to the Provincial Islamic Committee Office. The latter will inspect the sighting and report its observation to Sheikhul Islam, who will issue a general announcement for the end of Ramadan. 14. Photo via Thai Tai Channel Police raided a huge crypto mine in Samut Prakan province, just south of Bangkok, yesterday. To dig for their digital currencies, the miners used stolen electricity with damages amounting to more than one million baht. Police from Samut Prakan Police Station and officials from the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) raided a three-storey rented building in Soi Mungkorn-Nark Dee in Phraek Sa sub-district, Mueang district. During the investigation, the officers discovered that there were 100 crypto-mining devices on the second and third floors of the building, while the first floor housed a lot of computers. No one was inside the building and no one appeared to be living there. The miners used an internet system to operate each mining device remotely, reports KhaoSod. The officers from MEA conducted the raid after spotting an unusual amount of electricity usage in the area two months ago. Further investigations revealed that the building was illegally using electricity by doctoring the property’s digital multimeter, which is why the MEA was unaware of the situation. 17. Hot weather blamed for increased power consumption and charges The Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) is blaming the increase in electricity bills for many households in Bangkok on the hot weather, requiring greater use of air-conditioners. 18. The Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) is blaming the increase in electricity bills for many households in Bangkok on the hot weather, requiring greater use of air-conditioners. Government Spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri explained today (Friday) that for every rise of 1oC in external temperature, an air-conditioner in a house or office will consume 3% more energy to maintain the cooler temperature inside the building. For instance, if the outside temperature is 30oC, to keep the temperature in the house at 26oC, an air-conditioner must reduce the temperature inside the house by 4oC. If, however, the outside temperature is 40oC, the air-conditioner must work harder to reduce the temperature by 14oC.
