It does not qualify as a “heat wave”, which is an extended period of hot weather relative to the expected conditions of the area at that time of year, which may be accompanied by high humidity. He dismissed as inaccurate a foreign media report that the worst heat wave in history is currently threatening India, China, Thailand and Laos. As Thailand is in the middle of the dry season, Somkuan said there is a likelihood that temperatures may rise as high as 43oC, especially the central region. 5. A YouTuber found a human skull while filming content on the banks of the Mekong River in Nakhon Phanom province in northeast Thailand yesterday. At 6pm, Chanathip Chapuban – aka Mukdahan Moss – was riding a motorbike and filming content for his YouTube channel when he noticed something by the water on Sai Thong Kot Boon Beach (Si Khotrabun Golden Sand Beach), about 800 metres from Sawan Chai Khong Road. Moss said he wondered why no one else had found the skull since a lot of people attended the beach for Songkran celebrations between April 13-15. He finished filming his YouTube content and called the police to the scene. Police and staff from Sawang Nawa Ruam Rescue Foundation travelled to the scene to inspect the human remains. Officers found the upper half of a human skull about five metres away from the water. The lower jaw was nowhere to be found. Many types of shellfish were found inside the skull, so it is expected that this person died a long time ago and the current carried the skull along the Mekong River until it washed up on the shore and was found yesterday. 7. Phuket officials swoop on stray dogs, photo by Phuket Municipality. Following a number of complaints from fed up locals, Phuket officials on Wednesday swooped on stray dogs in the island province’s main city district. The residents had complained that a pack of dogs had been causing a nuisance. They said the dogs were chasing after motorcycles, as well as defecating on streets and people’s properties. The Department of Public Health and Environment’s veterinary team, and officials from Phuket Municipality, caught two strays in the Taling Chan community. The rest of the dogs, however, managed to run away. The officials brought the two captured dogs to the Phuket Stray Dog Shelter (Suang Pa Bang Kanun). There, they were checked for diseases before being vaccinated and sterilised. It was confirmed that the dogs would remain in the shelter’s care. The municipality reported that it is making efforts to deal with Phuket’s stray dogs, using methods such as vaccination and sterilisation. However, the problem with people abandoning unwanted dogs on the streets persists. The issue of people allowing their dogs to roam around on the streets makes the problem even worse, the municipality added. 19. Thailand‘s Department of Special Investigation (DSI) has requested that prosecutors bring charges against Panthawat “Nott” Nakwisut, the beleaguered proprietor of the now-defunct Kong Salak Plus online lottery platform, and 16 others for money laundering and gambling offences. On Friday, DSI detectives submitted their findings to the public prosecutors at the Attorney-General’s Office in Bangkok, situated on Ratchadapisek Road. Pongsathon Inamnuay, DSI’s anti-narcotics centre director, revealed that the 17 suspects were part of a group of 41 individuals implicated in the case. Four suspects remain in custody, whilst 20 still evade arrest warrants. Panthawat, commonly known as “Nott Kong Salak Plus,” was the CEO of the once-popular Kong Salak Plus, which ceased operations in February 2023. He faces charges of conspiring in money laundering due to his alleged involvement in delivering winning lottery tickets to a man referred to as “Foey” in order for him to cash in the prizes, totalling 53 million baht. The sum was then transferred to Panthawat’s bank account. The other 16 suspects reportedly participated in opening bank accounts and withdrawing funds. Consequently, they have all been charged with money laundering and managing gambling services. ECST group cites England’s plan to hand out free vaping kits to help 1M smokers quit smoking The End Cigarette Smoke Thailand (ECST) Group cited England’s initiative to hand out free vaping kits, calling it an effective way to help save smokers’ lives and prevent children from accessing e-cigarettes. 23. The End Cigarette Smoke Thailand (ECST) Group cited England’s initiative to hand out free vaping kits, calling it an effective way to help save smokers’ lives and prevent children from accessing e-cigarettes. This came after England announced its plan to allot 45 million pounds for the vaping kit distribution campaign, which is meant to reduce the country’s smoking rate. An additional 3 million pounds was allotted for efforts to clamp down on shops selling e-cigarettes to minors. Meanwhile, in Thailand, e-cigarettes are still banned, driving the product towards the black market and unregulated use. ECST hopes that the new government from the 2023 election will earnestly reconsider the e-cigarette policy in order to legalize vaping and keep e-cigarettes out of the hands of minors. Asa Saligupta, a representative of the End Cigarette Smoke Thailand (ECST) group and the Facebook page “What are e-cigarettes?”, which has over 100,000 followers, said that, “E-cigarettes are legal in England, allowing its government to impose measures and effectively enforce the regulations to protect minors. The UK government is set to allot 45 million pounds (approximately 1.921 billion baht) for a free vaping kit campaign to reduce the country’s smoking rate and another 3 million pounds (approximately 127 million baht) for clamping down on shops selling vapes to youths under the age of 18.” The measure came to light when the UK health minister announced that over one million people would be offered free vaping kits to encourage them to give up harmful conventional cigarettes and switch to electronic cigarettes.
