  1. PHOTO: Flickr/Harshil Shah With Bangkok (bad) and much of northern Thailand (worse) shrouded in a blanket of smog, officials are urging people to keep their face masks on while celebrating Songkran outdoors. According to a Coconuts report, the Public Health Ministry is advocating for face masks to protect people from harmful microparticles – even going so far as to suggest that people should forget outdoor water play and stay indoors. Deputy Minister Satit Pitutecha says that despite the pandemic abating, it’s not yet time to discard face masks, given the dangerous levels of air pollution across much of central and northern Thailand. However, the fact remains that most face masks cannot filter out PM2.5 microparticles, although the N95 surgical masks can reduce exposure. Coconuts reports that yesterday, Bangkok’s air was measured as “unhealthy”, ranking at 138 on the global pollution index. And the Swiss air quality technology company, IQAir, predicts air quality in the capital will worsen over the coming days, peaking on Friday. 10. Thai man’s Emerald Buddha Songkran office party outfit is ‘inappropriate,’ monk says A Thai man won 5000 baht for ‘best outfit’ at his office’s Songkran party in Udon Thani province yesterday, but a senior Buddhist monk says that dressing like the Emerald Buddha is “inappropriate.” Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1291841-thai-man’s-emerald-buddha-songkran-office-party-outfit-is-‘inappropriate’-monk-says/
  11. A Thai man won 5000 baht for ‘best outfit’ at his office’s Songkran party in Udon Thani province yesterday, but a senior Buddhist monk says that dressing like the Emerald Buddha is “inappropriate.” The Emerald Buddha is a statue of the historical Buddha in a meditative pose, made out of the semi-precious stone jasper and considered the “sacred palladium of Thailand.” It is housed at Wat Phra Gaew (“The Temple of the Emerald Buddha”) on the grounds of the Grand Palace in Bangkok. Phra Phrayom Kalayano, the abbot of Wat Suan Kaew, says the man who dressed in the Emerald Buddha costume doesn’t know what should and shouldn’t be made fun of. He called the outfit “inappropriate.” The Emerald Buddha is highly revered, even by the King of Thailand, said the monk. The Emerald Buddha undergoes a ceremonial costume change three times per year at the start of the summer, rainy and winter seasons. The ceremony is only performed by the King of Thailand. Songkran marks the start of the Thai New Year. Phra Phrayom reflected on revered Thai monk Buddhadasa’s famous teaching, “Don’t be more stupid in the New Year than the year before.” Full Story: https://thethaiger.com/thai-life/thai-mans-emerald-buddha-songkran-office-party-outfit-is-inappropriate-monk-says -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-04-11 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 13. Photo via Facebook/ วัลลภ อำพร A Thai man driven by jealousy, set fire to the house of his wife in Nakhon Pathom province near Bangkok after she left him and travelled to another province with her family. The man also allegedly threatened to kill his family and carried a gun with him at all times. The wife’s brother, a 35 year old man named Wanlop Arpha, used a Facebook group to share information about the incident. He urged netizens to report to the police if they see the offender, a 48 year old man named Min Sukheewong. He said… “This is a dangerous person. He is my sister’s husband, named Min. He drove a Toyota Hilux Vigo, registered in Bangkok number 7กฒ3637, to my house and set it on fire at about 11pm on Sunday, April 9. He also threatened to kill my whole family every time he had a row with my sister. This time, it was lucky that no one was home when the fire broke out. He carries a gun with him all the time. I filed a complaint with the police already, but he is still at large.” Wanlop later gave an interview with KhaoSod saying this neighbour spotted the fire and extinguished it, so the house was not completely damaged. He checked the security camera and believes that Min was injured in the fire as he could not escape in time when the flames grew bigger. 17. Photo by toastal via Flickr Bang Rak District Office officially announced that Silom Road, a popular destination for water fights in Bangkok during Songkran, will remain open this year. Locals and tourists can take part in the water fights on the streets and sidewalks of each Soi. After three years of being affected by the pandemic, the Songkran Festival and its accompanying water fights will be fully restored this year. The water fights on Silom Road are one of the most popular attractions that people eagerly anticipate each year during the festival. However, this year, the road will not be closed so that people can enjoy the full area for water splashing. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and Bang Rak District Office wanted to make the public aware that Silom Road is the main traffic route in the heart of Bangkok. If the road was closed it would affect the overall traffic system, the residents living in the area, and patient delivery at the nearby hospitals. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt reported yesterday that Bangkok will not ban the Songkran Festival or water fights in the Silom area. People can still enjoy the festival, but not on the main road. He was twice arrested on the same charge last year. The scammer, 32 year old Phachara Ninjiasakun, was arrested inside the shopping mall following a complaint made by a female victim in 2020. Officers later searched his accommodation and confiscated his computer, mobile phone, female underwear, a doctor’s gown, and Alprazolam narcotics that he used to drug his victims and make them lose consciousness. According to the police report, Phachara was arrested on the same charges by officers from Yannawa and Khlongton Police Station in Bangkok on September 14 and October 2 last year. His targets were female doctors and entrepreneurs who were too busy to check up on him or investigate his criminal history. The woman revealed to police that she met Phachara on Facebook and went out on a date. During their date, Phachara encouraged her to drink something that made her lose consciousness. While she was unconscious, Phachara used her finger to unlock her phone and transferred 1 million baht to his account.
