The Pattaya mayor Poramese Ngampiches personally ordered a coastal erosion prevention project at Dongtan Beach, saying a new sewer system would fix flooding problems in the long run. A personal visit by the mayor took place yesterday, June 27th, 2022, after many local business operators reached out to Poramese concerned that Dongtan Beach was critically eroding due to recent relentless rain. According to The Pattaya News reporters, the mayor and a group of city engineers personally inspected the beach to assess the damage. The mayor then directed his staff to use loaders to scope the sand that had previously been washed away from the beach, to replenish the eroding beach. The work took around three hours before completion. Justice Minister Somsak Thepsuthin spoke about the progress of hiring prisoners to clean the sewers throughout Bangkok on Sunday, June 26th, that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) had contacted the Department of Corrections to request support for prisoners to work on cleaning sewers as public services, initially starting around Huai Khwang market on July 1st. According to the Department of Drainage and Sewerage which set the scope of work, the hired prisoners from 12 prisons would clean 249.60 kilometers of drains under the responsibility of the Department and another 280.76 kilometers of drains in 15 district offices, accumulatively a distance of 280.76 kilometers. In the meantime, the Board has ordered the state-run Transport Company to freeze their fares for three more months, to ease the burden on passengers. Deputy Transport Permanent Secretary Sorapong Paitoonphong said that the current fares charged by private and state-run bus operators are based on a diesel price of 27 baht/litre, but the price has now increased to 35 baht/litre, raising the costs for bus operators, many of whom have threatened to cease operations or cut their services substantially. The Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) announced the arrests of two alleged drug smugglers and the confiscation of 6 million methamphetamine pills and properties in dispute worth more than 21 million baht. Police General Roy Ingkapairote, Deputy police chief of the Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB), ordered the ONCB police to conduct an expanding investigation of two drug networks which eventually led to the arrests on Sunday, June 26th. In the first case, suspect Wattana Sriwilai, 48, was captured along with 1,976,000 methamphetamine tablets while reportedly in the process of transferring them onto a 6-wheel vehicle. He told the police that he was hired by a Lao man, whose name was unknown and who he claimed to be unable to contact, for 100,000 baht to drive the truck to transport the drugs from Mueang Khon Kaen District, Khon Kaen, to Saraburi province.
