Thai customs officials seized about eight tonnes of frozen pork, worth about 1.6 million baht, from two trucks in Kantharalak district of the north-eastern province of Maha Sarakham yesterday (Wednesday). According to the customs investigation and suppression unit based in the north-eastern region, officials received a tipoff that two trucks, one with an Ubon Ratchathani license plate and the other from Si Sa Ket, would be delivering a substantial shipment of frozen pork, smuggled into Thailand from the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, to a customer in Maha Sarakham. A team of customs officials was dispatched to Kham Riang sub-district, where the smuggled pork was supposed to be delivered to the customer. When the two trucks appeared, customs officials at a checkpoint searched them and found the pork. TBA Discusses FIDS Easing with Banking Regulators BANGKOK (NNT) - As interest rates climb, the Thai Bankers’ Association (TBA) has arranged a meeting with regulators to consider further relaxation of banks’ contributions to the Financial Institution Development Fund (FIDF). BANGKOK (NNT) - As interest rates climb, the Thai Bankers’ Association (TBA) has arranged a meeting with regulators to consider further relaxation of banks’ contributions to the Financial Institution Development Fund (FIDF). During this week’s meeting of the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry, and Banking (JSCCIB), Payong Srivanich, the chairman of the TBA, met with representatives from the Bank of Thailand (BoT) and the Finance Ministry to discuss the possibility of relaxing the FIDF fee contribution. Payong, however, indicated that several issues must be examined and that the relaxation is not anticipated to be finalized in the near future. As a result of the impact of Covid-19, the central bank mandates that banks continue contributing to the FIDF fee at the standard rate of 0.46 percent of their deposits beginning in January 2023. This is an increase from the current rate of 0.23 percent. According to the TBA, if regulators permit banks to reduce their FIDF fee contribution, banks could delay projected interest rate rises for loans caused by the recent normalization of the central bank’s policy rate. Payong said FIDF fee contribution at the standard rate would boost financing costs for the banking sector as interest rates begin to rise following the Bank of Thailand’s rate hike last month amid an uneven economic recovery. Payong remarked that fee reduction would coincide with the normalization of the central bank’s policy rate and the commercial banks’ delayed increase in prime lending rates. Thai Firms Face Rising Cyberthreats BANGKOK (NNT) - A survey on cybersecurity has revealed that 88% of operational technology (OT) firms in Thailand suffered cyber-intrusions within the past 12 months. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1271292-thai-firms-face-rising-cyberthreats/ -
BANGKOK (NNT) - A survey on cybersecurity has revealed that 88% of operational technology (OT) firms in Thailand suffered cyber-intrusions within the past 12 months. In March of this year, the "Global 2022 State of Operational Technology and Cybersecurity Report" by Fortinet, a global cybersecurity business, polled over 500 OT professionals worldwide, including those in Thailand. Peerapong Jongvibool, vice president for Southeast Asia and Hong Kong at Fortinet, stated that as the IT security landscape becomes more complex, networked OT systems have also become susceptible to these expanding risks. Peerapong stated that with 93% of agencies globally experiencing intrusion, the issue substantially impacts businesses’ productivity and must be addressed immediately. He noted that malware, ransomware, and hackers were the top three intrusions against Thai businesses. According to Fortinet, 89% of Thai OT enterprises facing assaults were back online within a few hours, while the remaining 1% required days, weeks, or months. In addition, 71% of Thai OT businesses encountered operational disruptions that endanger physical safety, productivity, and income. The poll also found that 18% of Thai OT firms have between one thousand and ten thousand IP-enabled devices in operation, a severe cyber security weakness that makes it easy to launch an attack. Thailand’s Mobile Phone Usage Expected to Increase BANGKOK (NNT) - A survey has suggested that mobile usage in Thailand could increase significantly in the upcoming years as a result of the increased interest in digital use that occurred during the pandemic. BANGKOK (NNT) - A survey has suggested that mobile usage in Thailand could increase significantly in the upcoming years as a result of the increased interest in digital use that occurred during the pandemic. Norwegian telecom giant Telenor has conducted a study called “Digital Lives Decoded,” which surveyed 8,227 mobile internet users over 18 years old in Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. The study examined the impact of mobile devices on consumer lifestyles and illustrated how mobile connectivity empowers users. According to the report, mobile users in the Philippines and Thailand are the most reliant on mobile devices, admitting to having their phones with them at all times. In Thailand, 82% of respondents stated they anticipated using their mobile phones more in the next year or two, which is higher than the 74% national average. Thais are the least concerned about keeping up with future technological changes at 63%, compared to an industry average of 85%. Regarding mobile device privacy and security, 93% of respondents in the survey expressed concern about the issue, while nearly 27% expressed a difference in opinion. About 68% of Thai respondents, compared to an average of 58% for all markets surveyed, stated they felt having mobile phones greatly improved their quality of life. 75% of women respondents in Thailand believe that mobile connectivity widens their work opportunities, increases their income, and gives them better access to education and information, compared to 49% of male respondents. Telenor said that mobile data usage has more than doubled in most Asian nations since the beginning of the pandemic, transforming how people communicate at work and home. The agency added that the changes in digital use are here to stay, and consumers will continue to immerse themselves in a digital world despite the relaxation of travel and social interaction regulations. BANGKOK (NNT) - The government will receive additional 3 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine from pharmaceutical firm Pfizer, to be available for children aged six months to under five years. Minister of Public Health Anutin Charnvirakul said that the 3 million doses of Pfizer’s magenta cap vaccine would be shipped in the fourth quarter of 2022. Given that the Department of Disease Control has a standing order with Pfizer, Anutin stated that a procurement contract is expected to be concluded soon and that delivery of these vaccine doses would take less time than in past batches. For the first two shots, three weeks apart, children under the age of five must get no more than 10 micrograms of each vaccine dosage. The booster shot, meanwhile, contains 3 micrograms of the Covid vaccine and will be given eight weeks after the second injection. As of September 6, Thailand had administered more than 142.89 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine: 57.27 million doses being the first jab, 53.74 million doses of the second jab, and 31.88 million doses of the third shot. The hopes of non-governmental organisations to strip senators of the right to select the prime minister after the next election have been dashed, after parliament rejected their bill to amend Section 272 of the Constitution. The Bill, initiated by former election commissioner Somchai Srisutthiyakorn and NGOs and seconded by more than 50,000 people, received 356 votes from senators and MPs at their joint meeting on Wednesday, which is short of the 364 minimum required for the passage of the Bill. 102 MPs and 151 senators voted against the bill, while 45 senators and five MPs abstained. Suspended Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has insisted that his 8-year term in the job did not expire on August 24th, as posited by opposition parties, because his term should be counted from when the 2017 Constitution (B.E. 2560) came into force, on April 6th, 2017. In what is believed to be his written statement to the Constitutional Court, which was leaked today, he claims that his first term, under the Interim 2014 Constitution (B.E. 2557) expired along with the replacement of the interim charter by the 2017 Constitution. He claimed that Section 158 (paragraph 4), regarding the restriction of legal rights, does not clearly specify that it also applies to the premiership under previous charters and, in accordance with the principle of legal interpretation, if a charter does not clearly stipulate that a legal right is to be restricted, it cannot be interpreted in a way in which that right is restricted.
