Under the Constitution, the president can veto a bill, sign it or let it lapse into law thirty days from the time he receives the final enrolled form. The law, known as Republic Act (RA) 11861, allows for a P1,000 monthly cash subsidy for solo parents earning minimum wage, and a 10% discount on certain medicines and food supplements purchased by low income solo parents who have children six years and below. The son of the late Philippines dictator Ferdinand Marcos on May 11 claimed victory in the presidential election, vowing to be a leader "for all Filipinos", his spokesman said. AFP / Ted Aljibe MANILA, Philippines (Updated 3:09 p.m.) — The Supreme Court has junked petitions challenging the candidacy of Ferdinand Marcos Jr., clearing the path to his oath-taking as the 17th president of the Philippines. The SC en banc voted 13-0 to junk one plea challenging the Commission on Elections's ruling that junked their petition against Marcos' Certificate of Candidacy and another that dismissed their disqualification case. "The Court held that in the exercise of its power to decide the present controversy led them to no other conclusion but that respondent Marcos Jr. is qualified to run for and be elected to public office. 3. State Funds to Subsidize Underground Internet Cables BANGKOK (NNT) - Authorities are set to subsidize operations by internet service providers to place roadside telecom and broadcast cables underground in Bangkok. 4. BANGKOK (NNT) - Authorities are set to subsidize operations by internet service providers to place roadside telecom and broadcast cables underground in Bangkok. Digital Economy and Society Minister Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn announced that a meeting will be held on July 4 between the ministry, the National Telecom Plc (NT), and Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt to discuss funding issues related to underground cable projects in the capital. Chaiwut explained that the underground cable project has been carried out by Krungthep Thanakom Co, a state enterprise under the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA). However, work has ceased due to the estimated 20 billion baht cost of the project. If internet service providers were to fully absorb the cost of laying underground cables, it was feared that this would lead to price hikes for internet services. The minister said the government intends to subsidize the operation using state funds, with the NT supervising the project that is expected to be completed in three to four years. Funds may be allocated from the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) or the Digital Economy Fund. Chaiwut noted that underground cables cannot be installed in certain areas of the capital, so some roadside cables will remain. He added, however, that new wiring will be installed to replace bundled cables that pose a safety risk or are an eyesore. The Digital Economy and Society minister also said cooperation from the public, the NBTC, the Metropolitan Electricity Authority and the Telecommunications Association of Thailand is also required for the swift and efficient completion of the rewiring projects. -- © Copyright NNT 2022-06-28 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 6. BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand has suggested a closer relationship between the kingdom and both BRICS and BRICS Plus member states to help advance the post-pandemic economic recovery. According to Government Spokesperson Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana, Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha recently delivered a speech on June 24 via a teleconference at the 14th BRICS Summit chaired by Chinese President Xi Jinping. BRICS is a group of major emerging economies whose membership comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Thailand joined the BRICS meeting as a member of the 13 Emerging Markets and Developing Countries (EMDCs). According to Gen Prayut, all nations should work towards tackling global economic challenges by restoring multilateral systems and approaches in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and to achieve greater resilience, balance and equity. He also said Thailand hopes to work with BRICS partners through ASEAN, China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and other frameworks. He added that Thailand, as one of the world’s biggest food producers, urges the world to work together and avoid imposing food export bans that disrupt global supply chains. -- © Copyright NNT 2022-06-28 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 8. BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand is now on track to adopting post-pandemic approaches from July 1 onwards. The Ministry of Public Health said vaccines and boosters remain crucial preventative tools, as case surges remain a possibility. Dr Kiattiphum Wongrajit, permanent secretary for Public Health, said the widespread transmission of COVID-19 in Thailand is unlikely, adding that the disease itself has become less severe in nature. The permanent secretary also assured that the public health system is capable of handling future cases. He stressed, however, that this does not mean the disease has been fully eradicated, and surveillance and monitoring for serious cases will remain in place. Dr Kiattiphum also noted that COVID-19’s status as an endemic disease will ultimately depend on the World Health Organization. He further emphasized the importance of vaccinations, especially among the vulnerable population. Thailand has so far administered 140 million COVID vaccine doses, with some 60 million people having already received at least one jab. On concerns over the spread of the BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron sub-variants in Thailand, Dr Kiattiphum said the Department of Medical Sciences has been monitoring the development of the two coronavirus strains since April. It is also urging the general public to get their boosters as these sub-variants have been found to be better at escaping immune responses. -- © Copyright NNT 2022-06-28 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 12. The opposition Move Forward Party has been cleared of serious charges that threatened its dissolution after the Election Commission (EC) decided not to forward an accuser’s complaint to the Constitutional Court. However, the legal headaches may not be over for the party seen as the most progressive outfit in the Thai Parliament. The same accuser has threatened to sue the election commissioners and seek a ruling on whether their decision to dismiss the complaint was lawful. Natthaporn Toprayoon, a former adviser to the Ombudsman, took his case to the EC in February last year, accusing Move Forward of taking actions between August 2020 and January 2021 that were aimed at overthrowing Thailand’s rule of democracy with the King as head of state.
