  2. Abundant garbage and household grease have been found in the sewers in Bangkok’s Huai Kwang area, on the first day of clearing the city’s drainage system by prisoners, to curb the persistent flooding problem especially during the current rainy season. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt, who observed the clearing operation in front of a wet market in Huai Kwang, said that he will seek cooperation from households by reducing the discharge of grease from their kitchens into the drains. He also said that there should be a space to store the grease, so it can be disposed of before it ends up in the drains and, along with garbage, blocks the flow of waste water, resulting in flooding on road surfaces during heavy rainfall. The Thai Ministry of Education has issued a set of regulations, applied in all schools since yesterday (Thursday), to prevent abuse of cannabis and hemp among students and teaching staff, while another regulation, from the Ministry of Public Health, banning the smoking of marijuana in public and its use by minors and pregnant becomes effective today. The new rules come as concerns grow after a few youths have been admitted to hospital after consuming the herbs since they were decriminalised on June 9th, resulting in a boom in cultivation, especially of cannabis, and the widespread use of the plants in food and drinks. According to the youth regulations jointly developed by the Education and Public Health ministries and the Royal College of Paediatricians of Thailand, students and personnel of all educational institutes and organisations under the Education Ministry are forbidden from using cannabis or hemp on the premises. They are also required to ensure that staff or students under their supervision do not use either of the two plants for recreational purposes. 22. A worker reaches for a hanging gas pump at a gas station in Quezon City, suburban Manila on June 7, 2022. AFP / Jam Sta. Rosa MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health reported Thursday 425 new COVID-19 infections, the highest in over two months. This brought the number of active cases in the country to 3,462. Why this matters The figure was the biggest daily rise since April 3, when the Philippines reported 690 additional cases. According to the DOH, there was a slight increase in COVID-19 cases amid the detection of more transmissible Omicron subvariants, increased mobility, and waning vaccine immunity. Metro Manila will remain under Alert Level 1—the laxest quarantine classification—until the end of June despite an uptick in COVID-19 cases. The slight increase in cases has so far not translated into high severe and critical hospital admissions, the DOH said.
