Just a note regarding using an agent. I have been doing so for several years with probably the most popular agency in the country. Always fast and efficient. But apparently with the recent bank issues identified by the government, things have changed. The paperwork at the office and answering questions is much greater now. Questions regarding address, landlord, bank account, phone, the bank app. I must have signed my name 15 times on several pieces of paper. After about 30 minutes they collected my passport and bank book and told me 2 to 3 weeks... Well, it has been 2 weeks with nothing. Also, I was told at some point during the process I might have to return to the office to "straighten out a problem". Whatever that means. Anyway, if I ever get my passport back I think next year I will just start over on my own. I know I will have to leave in order to do this. The agent rout just seems like an overpriced hassle now.

If you don't get a refundable ticket, many airlines will give you a monetary credit for a future flight if you cancel. Or, many of the Asian airlines will pay a you a refund for a fee if you cancel. I would not go to an agent.
