  1. Again though, if intending to go the extension of stay route, IMO easier to just rock up visa exempt. It adds an extra step (applying for the Non-O in Thailand) but you don't have the hassle in Canada (getting bank statements for the visa, and getting the actual visa @ $130 - cheaper in Thailand).
  2. Thai embassy websites have to be up there in the list of "most erroneous official websites" list. Over the years I've seen so many with the wrong/outdated info it's unbelievable. That said, here's the info from the Vancouver Consulate re the Non-O (retirement). If you entered on that visa you could go down the 800K in a Thai bank to get the ongoing extension of stay.
  3. See post from @ourdon above. Different requirements. O-A doesn't require the money in a Thai bank to get the actual visa. To get yearly extensions based on retirement (i.e. after the visa expires) does. Yes. There's a couple of things that tend to get muddled up - visas and extensions of stay. You can get a Non-O for reason of retirement and then get an annual 12 month extension of stay based on that visa. No Thai involvement required. Getting the extension is a fairly simple and painless process depending on the IO involved. If as you say, you intend to spend 6 months every year in Thailand going forward, to me, the simplest would be to drop 800K in a Thai bank and then come and go as I please (allowing for reentry permit and current restrictions due to Covid of course). Others are possibly happier keeping the money invested elsewhere and redoing the paperwork every time they need a new visa.
  4. Yes, no downside. Don't need to do anything, just don't get a reentry permit.
  5. No, Canada (in your case). But ... see below. You can by getting a reentry permit prior to travel (at IO or airport). Kinda. The O-A visa is valid for 12 months, you can get virtually 2 years out of it by leaving and entering again just before it expires (and getting stamped in for another 12 months). Then apply for a new visa. Or, you can get an extension to stay based on retirement on the initial visa (at which point you need to have the 800K in a Thai bank or transfer 65K in monthly or a combination thereof). This you can keep going indefinitely at the present time. Either way, just need a reentry permit to keep it "live" if you wish to travel in and out. You can open an account even if you enter visa exempt, although it's getting more difficult. If you enter on a tourist visa or visa exempt, you'd apply for a Non-O in Thailand (800K in bank on the day of the application) then an extension based on retirement after the money has been in the bank 2 months. With your wife being over 50 I don't think the dependant visa applies, I believe you both need to meet the requirements but not 100% sure as not looked into it. Personally, the O-A only makes sense to me if you don't want to move money into Thailand, the extra paperwork, insurance etc. is not for me. For my circumstances, visa exempt > Non-O > extension based on retirement is the least hassle path (or arrive on a Non-O). If money is no issue could also throw some at an Elite Visa (at your age and planned travel not an appealing option IMO).
  6. Technically, they should refuse your extension when next checked (some IOs check at the 3 month after point, guessing yours didn't mention it?). As always, different IO different outcome. You could always put it back and have a word with them now re making a mistake or if that's not possible/desirable (pretty dodgy opening yourself up to extortion) plan on restarting again next year (new NonO).
  7. Switch off javascript (they're using it to disable right-click on the images).
  8. Need to keep it in for 3 months after extension is granted then you can drop it to 400K until 2 months prior to renewing extension; less than 400K and you'd likely have to start all over again.
  9. Least paperwork the better IMO, could be a bit tight timewise getting the bank set up if a person hasn't already got one but easy enough to get a 30 day extension on the visa exempt if required or just throw a few bucks at an agent and get an account set up pronto.
  10. Been possible for years and is often a recommended path to retirement extension. Visa exempt > Non O > extension of stay based on retirement.
  11. Dumb question but has to be asked due to it catching so many people ... did you in fact upload the docs? There is a second button to complete the upload prior to lodging application.
  12. I know it's a different one, just pointing him to the general location and giving an alternative venue.

  15. IMHO, you should. But it's not a requirement for quarantine, just "sandbox" type entry.
  16. You'll have plenty time to make a 12:30 flight regardless of which Bkk ASQ you end up going with.
  17. Picky! Tell me these wouldn't tempt you ... 40 Sqm studio listed 5 days ago for 999,000 Bht ????
  18. Check with your hotel; most appear to be 6 am (to give them time to get the paperwork finalised) although technically any time after midnight.
  19. I take it you've checked the voltage and it's only US standard 120V? If so, power converters are available for less than US$50 e.g. https://www.amazon.com/BESTEK-Adapter-Converter-Voltage-Worldwide/dp/B07VB1YKG2/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=thailand+power+converter&qid=1630251640&sr=8-4 https://www.amazon.com/Voltage-Converter-International-Adapter-European/dp/B073J9QWKY/ref=psdc_10967761_t2_B07VB1YKG2 Personally I'd probably buy it in the States from a reputable supplier and make sure it had safety features such as inbuilt fuse etc.
  20. Depends; worldwide some are some aren't, every KFC in Phuket for example are allegedly halal. Unless muslim not sure why it would be an issue.
