  1. Rebuilding the wall is an excellent idea. If it is built wide enough people could walk along the top. There are many nice trees along the moat which could provide nice shade points of interest.

In terms of plants in public places I think the municipality actually does very well and this should be acknowledged. There are plenty around the moat. on all the central reservations on the city's highways and in plenty of other places. There is however always room for more and householders and businesses could all improve the environment simply by planting more.

Improving the environment does not have to solely rely on giant government plans and expensive mega projects - things can improve considerably by communities and individuals just trying that little bit harder.

  2. Yes ignore the whingers PMF although Christmas is not the same as at home there is still plenty of good cheer and goodwill about. One advantage is that you don't get the same rampant commercialism that starts after Halloween although it gets a bit more prevalent every year.

Christmas in Chiang Mai is centred around family and friends and limited to just a few days around the 25th and at New Year which the Thais celebrate with great gusto.

I am sure you will enjoy it. :)

  3. Loads of options for cheap fabric in shops in Wararot. Look in the bargain buckets. Most is 1.5m wide if that is no good for your requirements just get Sopa to sew them together for you. She is just round the corner from the main fabric shops and the chances are she'd do it on the spot.

    Happy covering :)

  4. I think it more likely that the bar will be propping me up Jackr :)

Thanks everyone for the continuing information. Johpa thanks especially for your interesting contribution.

Blinky was kind enough to do a bit of reminiscing last night which added a little more to my scant knowledge. What was the name of the place on Moon Muang again BB? Mt\y alcohol consumption last night has wiped part of my memory.

Kevin can you expand a bit on Papa Dicks? I've never heard of it before.

  5. Certainly Riverside and the Brasserie would fit and if anyone has any historical information I would be very interested.

Old karaoke joints are also of interest I don't discriminate against any type of establishment in terms of my historical interest. In fact historical knocking shhop would be another interesting topic but beyond the scope of the current thread. :)

  6. Old? Lamphun is 1200 years old. Old? Olmecs, 1200 BCE. A British pub is the new kid in town.

Yes PB but are any of their pubs still trading?

Ye Olde Fighting Cocks in St Albans dates from the 8th century! Has Lamphun any drinking establishment that can match that? :)

  7. Thanks all for the illuminating comments especially to Flatouthruthefog for the additional information. Anyone any idea on Thai establishments that have been around a long while?

Congrats to the Pub 40 years in this town is quite an achievement :)

  8. Having only been open for nearly 3 years Tuskers is still a newbie in the game but I was thinking the other day about Chiang Mai pub history especially about establishments that are still trading today.

Which pubs in town have the longest pedigree and when did they open?

Obviously I know a little about the Gymkhana Club, The Pub, Riverside, Warm Up and the UN Irish which have all been around for a goodly while but how long and are there any others I have missed? How old is the Red Lion Kevin?

Also I am particularly interested if there are any Thai pubs that have an 'ancient' pedigree and are worthy of note?

I once worked in a pub that opened its doors in 1412 and have supped in numerous establishments that claim to be the oldest pubs in Britain. While I don't expect anything that old perhaps we can put together a bit of history and hopefully the answers will be interesting for TV members.

    Thanks :)

  9. No it's certainly not over yet. Katich and Watson played well to be undefeated at the close but there is a long way to go to get to 546. Should be a very tense days play today. No chance of a draw in my eyes either an England win or a record smashing victory for the Aussies.

Any cricket fans wanting to watch it at Tuskers can have 25% off for the rest of the test.

On the question as to why Australia consistently punch above their weight across a huge range of sports I believe it is a combination of a sporting culture, a climate that encourages out door activity all year round and an excellent academy system which I am delighted that many sports in the UK are now copying.

Anyway here's to an excellent days play today.

  10. Hey ho Blinky et al.

Yes can't wait for the big finale at the Oval starting on Thursday.

Momentum has switched yet again and now the Green Baggies have the edge especially as they only need the draw but Freddie is back and well rested for his last ever test match and we all know what he can do when his blood is up so bring it on.
