46 minutes ago, grandpa said:I cannot understand how Thailand can control this virus so quickly when most of the rest of the world (who incidentally do a huge amount of testing by comparison) are still struggling to put the lid on it! And if the figures are correct, why aren't world leaders calling in their droves to discover the secret of success?
Magic Thailand!
I love that this expert could so accurately and confidently state the peak of this third wave was on April 24th. Hope he got a pay rise

Doommongers and panic merchants are uncharacteristically quiet in this thread.

Very unlikely. Thailand can manipulate test and cases data as much as it wants, but I don't think it can manipulate excess deaths data, it is a metric that has been used worldwide to show true effect of covid

Magic Thailand strikes again... only in Thailand it seems does this virus manage to take a break once in a while, chill out and slow down it's never ending spread to other people. Other countries must be looking on in awe of the magic of Thai people and the Thai govt
Truly Amazing!

We have no way to know the future direction of the virus, because we don’t have access to the random sampling data; ie, we don’t know the true positivity rate. There are presumably people in the government who do know.
This is completely wrong. Yes we do know the future direction, that is the point, dozens of countries have been exposed to this variant, it didn’t go well anywhere. The virus will behave the same everywhere, it does not matter that this is Thailand, because Thailand is just like anywhere else, a never ending supply of willing hosts and carriers so the virus can spread

If 98% of infections come from the B 1.1.7 variant? Why aren't the govt taking steps to ensure Thailand doesn't follow the UK's terrible decisions? Thailand cannot cope with anything like the cluster* that hit the UK over the past 3 months. I cannot fathom why anyone on here thinks this is under control

Do you think closing open-air public parks is "necessary"?
No. That is a big mistake, people need safe access to outdoor exercise

Seriously?? Thailand is not special, this virus will do what it has done in every country it has been found, it will explode, and that has not even begun yet

Why not just call them isolation camps? The only purpose they serve as far as I can see is to get infected people out of general society

1 hour ago, wasabi said:The only Covid number from Thailand you can semi-believe in is the death count. That is rising so the situation is not under control.
And those numbers at least from UK experience are the result of infections up to 14-28 days ago, so expect deaths to massively increase in the coming weeks

At this point instead of gloating and laughing at the lack of planning, I just feel sad that the ordinary people who have so much belief in their leaders have been let down so badly.

I think we can safely now say, the recent drop in case numbers was the result of manipulation, based on the forlorn hope that numbers would slow down and the govt would be lauded by one and all for doing a good job.
They thought this time was just like the last time.

2 minutes ago, Phaser said:I have not seen any “R” numbers for Thailand reported? The R number is the number of uninflected people one Covid positive person will likely infect
if the number is below 1 the virus will burn itself out - how much beyond 1 the R number is allows for projections or rate of spread -
You cannot report an R number unless you have a good understanding of progress of infections, and you cannot do that without mass testing to all that come

2 minutes ago, TallGuyJohninBKK said:As posted above, the government said today they are preparing to expand their numbers of ICU beds around the country to meet the rising demand:
Per Richard Barrow:
"Out of the 262 ICU beds in #Bangkok, there are only 69 left. Health officials estimate that they will run out in 6-8 days if the rate of infection continues as it is. Nationwide, there are only 1,000 beds. Enough for only another 19 days"
https://www.facebook.com/richardbarrowthailand/posts/318455079640762
All very confusing. Another poster said Thailand has 10,000 ventilators available. How can they have 10,000 ventilators but only 1,000 ICU beds?

This seems relevant today. The Indian system is collapsing because of covid, deaths are being hugely under reported, but India are mass testing. Thailands numbers do not add up, they cannot hide deaths as easily as case numbers
If the variant going around Thailand is as bad as the Indian one, then Thailand must take action now.

Quotethe purchases Thailand made were based on the situation at that time, when the country was successful in containing the outbreak, and the government did not want to put people’s lives at risk since some of the available vaccines used untried technology.
It is the job of govt to prepare for the future not just respond to events as they happen.

He is probably not alone in thinking this will be just like first mini wave Thailand had in early 2020.
It won't be

This is a huge waste of scarce services. Let people quarantine at home, give them ankle monitors if they can't be trusted to stay home. Hospitals should only be used for people in danger of dying.

Bangkok hospitals restricting Covid tests
"Bangkok hospitals were limiting their testing for the Covid-19 virus Monday, as the rate of new cases amid the third wave dropped slightly but remained well above 1,000 per day.
Private establishments BNH Hospital and Praram 9 Hospital said they were no longer accepting new Covid patients. The Paolo Hospital in Phaholyotin, also private, said they have received a new batch of test kits and are accepting walk-ins, but only from 8 am to 5 pm, and for a flat fee of 4,500 baht.
Among the public hospitals, Taksin Hospital is providing free tests, but only to at-risk patients. Thammasat University Hospital and King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital are also testing only at-risk populations, and only up to 100 tests per day. Chulalongkorn starts distributing queue numbers at 7:30 am. Neither are providing drive-through services."

Appalling. They will never ever get any reliable data with that kind of money pinching attitude. Tests have to be free and they have to be available everywhere

1 hour ago, TallGuyJohninBKK said:Better results overall today compared to the 1,767 new cases reported Sunday, despite the three new deaths reported today, with only two provinces, Bangkok and Chiang Mai, reporting more than 100 new cases (yesterday's numbers in parentheses for comparison):Bangkok -- 293 (down from 347)Chiang Mai -- 197 (up from 164)The dropoff in new cases reported Monday may have been influenced by Sunday being the last day of the long Song Kran holidays weekend. However, a government spokesman expressed optimism that the recent control measures/restrictions imposed by the government will lead to "a better situation" in the coming weeks. The new COVID cases total the government reported Monday was the lowest daily total in the past five days.Add up the cases from past six days divide by number of days and bingo 1500 is still the magic number!

Thailand’s third COVID-19 wave has already peaked: CCSA
in Thailand News Headlines

I think it is running rampant in Thailand but amongst younger people that wouldn't show up so much. It is only when it surfaces amongst more clinically vulnerable will you see what is happening elsewhere happen in Thailand.
Thailand has to realise where they are on the curve, I personally think they have got it spectacularly wrong and the main peak is a few weeks away.
