  1. They can't tell a Russian from a German but if you pry around enough you'll find they don't care much for Indians, Arabs or anyone else that's browner than they are.
  2. what I mean is that some tourist is going to read the sign and then speak the name they read to a Thai person. Everyone can read the sign which is good but then you can't speak the name to Thais. Why not just call it the full proper name then? "Eastern moon temple" (or whatever). Now it makes 100% sense to foreigners but Thais are totally confused. Now good way to solve this really, all choices are compromises.
  3. that would be good for the reader but does the average Thai person even know what east/west means after 12 years of English lessons? I actually seriously doubt this. So you can read the sign then but not speak the name to others.
  4. what's wrong with ahk? If it's Awg you'll get a strong discernible "g" sound which will confuse Thais. Listen to how it actually sounds: https://translate.google.com/?sl=en&tl=th&text=out &op=translate
  5. they never even bother to ask native speakers.
  6. yeah but he's gone rogue and doesn't hold any power in government.
  7. People have been saying this for years but it's missing the point. The bottom line is the upper class and elites drink alcohol and they don't smoke weed. Generally the people who smoke are a different economic and social class entirely. If the elites start smoking casually like they drink the laws will change. It's as simple as that.
  8. I wish it was only dual-pricing, try more like 10x.
  9. Wait, you think Thai builders are withholding all their excellent building skills because we haven't stroked their precious ego enough? Dude they literally don't know any better or are too lazy or drunk.
  10. Really sums it up well. Can't squeeze blood from a stone.
  11. How do these things keep happening to the sex tourism capital world of the world?
  12. what do you mean, good ol' RamenRaven is a pillar of the community
  13. This is why they're so desperate for immigrants. It's tax cattle. SS is a Ponzi scheme which is paid for based on current taxation and is going to be drastically cut as the current generation is slowly replaced by low-wage immigrants from the 3rd world. It's seriously f'd.
  14. "it's not stolen because you could have chosen to kill yourself so it was really your choice in the end"
  15. that pretty much sums it up. Endless other countries with a better workforce to chose from. Thailand is about tropical climate, retiring and girls.
  16. no it's their fault for not doing their job. You can't do businesses in a country if accountants makes mistakes that result in bribes from immigration and you need to repeat this process annually. You must be the only person who thinks Thai's do good work and are competent. It's so clearly not the case.
  17. Good point. Let's start a list of "things Thailand can't even enforce at home" and it will include things like going 100k/hour in a school zone while belching out black smoke. If they get involved in collecting taxes on a mass scale their minds will melt.
  18. Thailand immigration is mainly a make-work program for government bureaucrats. Very little of it actually makes sense if their goal was merely to manage immigration in a safe, fair and efficient way.
  19. Does anyone know what % of the population pays taxes here? I know government employees do but I've even heard them say taxes are negligible. So much of the population is earning cash running tiny shops that I can't imagine they're paying any sizable income tax.
  20. so who is this targeted at? People who are working in Thailand are already paying taxes and everyone else who brings their foreign earned money here was already taxed in their home country so who does that leave? maybe people living on investing portfolios but I think even those are taxed in many countries.
  21. oh don't get me started on that. I've seen diversity hires blow up too once. Don't get me wrong Thailand is generally a difficult place to do business but America is going down fast and hard in real time.
  22. my brother is trying to quit his business in Thailand because of the hassles with immigration and multiple times now incompetent accountants have screwed up his taxes and this resulted in paying bribes to immigration to fix the mistakes. Every year they make you do this so you're never at peace. It's a joke Thailand is an easy country to work in unless you're one man with a wok on a street corner, try that in America and see how far you get.
  23. this is a whole other issue that will make it very difficult to work with Thai's on a higher level. There is a certain degree of corruption with Thai's which makes them see the law as more of suggestion and that spills over into work. So many times if you try to get a Thai person to do some job for you, they'll do it up to 90% and then hack the final 10% because it was easier for them, and in their eyes 90% is good enough. 100% of the time they'll fire your ass in America for doing this so good luck to Americans moving to Thailand and trying to work with the Thai's. Just come here to relax and play with the girls but leave the work back home.
  24. Fair enough I'm thinking of hiring staff for restaurants or builders, handy men etc... and I've seen those people fail so badly so often. You just can't hold them to American standards of working so don't think you can just come to Thailand and start barking orders and expecting people to show up at exactly 8 AM and do everything exactly like you told them too.
