  1. The old blame game isn't going to help. Clearly farmers in the North believe the old slash and burn method is best because there is no cheap alternative. How did other countries overcome this problem? What are alternative methods that are inexpensive? I assume other countries overcame the problem so why can't Thailand learn from them?
  2. A news article with more adjectives than you can shake a stick at, demonizing the Chinese. Nothing to worry about there. Amazing how they know who did it and unfortunately couldn't catch them. If the Chinese police catch them all well and good. let's wait to see what happens next.
  3. I sincerely do hope some humanitarian issue will prevent their return to the Land of Persecution. I am sure they don't mind where they go as long as it is not home. It is unfortunate their church is called the Mayflower however, as we all know how those christians from Europe dealt with the local population in the past.* *Connotations arising from the name doesn't mean they will do the same
  4. The awards should go to big and small films, commercial and independent. Independent directors win awards abroad that make Thailand look good. I saw Apichatpong Weerasethakul at a special screening of Blissfully Yours in Bangkok. It was banned by the government and commercial movie houses wouldn't release it to the general public but won Un Certain Regard at Cannes. He would never have won in Thailand and was unrecognized here. Later, after everyone else in the world screamed his name, the government recognized his PR value. This is a silly change of rules as someone must have said that a piffling local award must be compared with the Oscars. Change the rules back to "all can be considered."
  5. Usually a lay person would pay for the crane and the money from donations. Still not in the spirit of Buddhism to show off like this.
  6. I believe a royal pardon is only available to those in jail and can't be given without jail time. Someone here might know more.
  7. I read these harvesters are collecting lungs in the north of Thailand. The tourism sector there doesn't seem too active though.
  8. The number of people who vote for someone is neither here nor there in US Presidential elections. Democrats keep winning the majority of voters (the "popular vote") while the Republicans have fewer people voting for their candidate but win the all-important electoral college. Nothing to do with how the majority of people vote for someone. Just saying. But the Orange guy is unlikely to win this time.
  9. Japan and the EU populations declining so there won't be enough people to work. Could AI make up the difference?
  10. Thai banks will always so no problem, right up until they collapse.
  11. Why is Singapore's Changi airport so good at handling visitors? They sit at their counters and process passports swiftly. It seems that staff appear just as the contents of a plane is unloading and then disappear until the next plane. Why is the system so different and efficient?
  12. Beside drugs, any legitimate use of this acid?
  13. Reporting on how Trump met Jun was notably biased I thought.
  14. Don't mention the smog. I mentioned it once but I think I got away with it.
  15. Why would Pheu That hook up with any other party if they win the vast majority of seats? Do the Republicans make deals with other parties to form a coalition when they win the House outright? Do the Conservatives? Parties that win everything don't make deals unless they have proportional representation or a minority government.
  16. It seems like this thread got hijacked by drugs. Thaksin was popular with common people for introducing universal healthcare and halving the poverty rate. That's why they liked him.
  17. Several years ago I was talking to the mayor of one coastal town and asked why do you have bins on the road, 100 meters from the beach? Why not put them on the beach? He informed that the municipality owns the road area while the beach is owned by the state and controlled by the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, which doesn't allow waste bins on the beach. Neither side could work together. Sad.
  18. It did seem odd that while i tested positive, but without symptoms, her indoors was fit as a fiddle. I can't figure it out.
  19. The way things are going, the government should build a new prison wing at each prison for policemen only because their lives would be in danger in the current jails.
  20. And yet Putin's own government still supports him. Seems like another Nuremberg style of trials will be needed. I bet they will claim they were "just following orders."
  21. Seems like a good way to get people to vote the Dems in.
  22. It looks like the government doesn't care about citizens, let alone the tourists that they so desperately need. Not everyone wants go to Phuket only.
  23. Unfortunately, after three decades here, i know that no matter how serious the cock up, Thais will make it. Who cares what Oz does, I live here.
