Innocent man freed after 80 days due to mistaken identity in Thai drug case
Purdey replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
Not sure sweeping statements are correct but there seems to be a tendency in the U.S. to put black people in prison. In Thailand it seems to be poor people without good legal representation. -
Innocent man freed after 80 days due to mistaken identity in Thai drug case
Purdey replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
A sad case indeed. I wonder whether he will receive compensation? While I admit mistakes are sometimes made, this looks like outright carelessness. Looking at other cases of innocent people imprisoned, I noticed a lot, but not exclusively, are in the USA, with its massive number of people in prison, disproportionately men of color. For instance, Richard Phillips spent 46 years behind bars for something he didn't do. An innocent Maurice Hastings spent 38 years in prison. These days, DNA evidence helps, but it takes effort to review these cases. Even worse, some are executed and found innocent when it is too late. This is one of the reasons I don't think the death penalty is a good idea. I applaud the Thai authorities for investigating further and releasing Anucha after 80 days as we know it could have been much worse. -

The days of military coups in Thailand are gone : Sutin
Purdey replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Simply an insult to Thai people's intelligence. The 1997 "people's constitution" gave people freedom, until the military took it away. You can reform the military to cut down the number of generals, cancel conscription - or whatever - but unless military bases are all moved to border areas and generals who rebel are imprisoned for life, not much will change. -

The Memo: Judge scrambles election with decision on Trump trial date
Purdey replied to Social Media's topic in World News
Looking back at other requests for postponement until later, I imagine courts have heard, Saddam: "That date isn't convenient as it is the day before I have an important meeting to invade somewhere." Goering: "The Nuremburg trial needs to be postponed as I have an important event in Paraguay to attend the day before." Julius and Ethel Rosenberg: "The trial date is inconvenient as we have a super appointment with Stalin in Moscow the day before." Sorry for the sarcasm, but I doubt courts consider plaintiff appointments.- 136 replies

Emergency decree against insurgency extended in Deep South

An insurgency implies an armed force with finding from abroad. If the offenders are Thai it would be an insurrection. In the past the Chinese supplied weapons to local Thais. So which is it, insurrection or insurgency? -

Looking forward to seeing what happens, but without a knowledgeable opinion myself. Being a former President, and with the leniency shown to Trump to date (no handcuffs, chains or other treatment usually given to offenders), would he be imprisoned or given a suspended sentence? I have seen presidents jailed in those infamous "sh*thole countries" he denigrates but not the USA - to date. Any legal beagles want to give an informed opinion?
