Top Thai virologist says 2023 is game over for COVID-19
Purdey replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
I see your point but I was thinking more about the overall numbers (defined as the result of Covid from early 2020 to early 2023) and not just the tail end. Overall, two countries with almost the same population size had very different results. With respect, I doubt anyone can call the number of deaths meaningless without some hard evidence to back it up. We must have evidence to place doubt on them. In Thailand the total deaths attributed to Covid was 33,902, while for UK it was 206,246. The UK had 24,341,615 cases while Thailand had 4,727,831. In each case you could double Thailand's statistics and still not reach the level of the UK. Seeing westerners proud of their refusal to wear masks, every health agency is still saying that wearing is better than not wearing. https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/ https://www.gavi.org/vaccineswork/five-reasons-wear-mask-even-if-you-dont-have#:~:text=Since individuals who have not, wearer from COVID-19 transmission. https://www.npr.org/2023/02/10/1155516547/are-there-places-you-should-still-mask-in-forever-three-experts-weigh-in This Guardian articles explains why masks are still needed. Have a good day. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/feb/09/the-inconvenience-of-covid-masks-are-better-than-the-alternative -
It would be a good way to earn income, if only the violators were not able to sue the ones taking the photos for damaging their reputation (defamation). This is why car number plates are blurred out when one driver smashes into another. The RTP needs to assure people they cannot be taken to court on criminal charges for defaming someone's reputation.

Ukraine war: What support is China giving Russia?
Purdey replied to Social Media's topic in World News
This Coalition of Evil (c) is likely to have some unexpected consequences. 1. India has historically relied on Russia for much of its armaments. 2. China and India dislike each other (understatement). 3. Russia is going to owe China big time. 4. India may find itself piggy in the middle with very serious concerns. -
Singapore airport is possible the standard by which all airports pass or fail. Have not been there for a few years but it is a pleasurable memory, unlike JFK where my Indian colleagues were dragged off for additional questioning because the Americans can't tell the difference between Indians and Arabs. I feel one of the issues that slow down incoming passengers in Bangkok is the time it takes for immigration to check and double check passports. That is the key to what makes Singapore a pleasure. They have computers to tell if a passenger is wanted for a something, yet in Bangkok they continue to flick back and forth, looking for goodness knows what. They ought to recognize a fake passport by scanning it, surely? To summarize, it is the human element that slows everything down, not the digital element.

Top Thai virologist says 2023 is game over for COVID-19
Purdey replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
It is interesting that Thai people are still wearing masks on the whole while westerners hold their heads up proudly without a mask. Then you look at the statistics for infections and deaths in say, the UK, a country with a similar population size and you think, that's not the example to follow. If Thais want to wear masks let them. I don't see them harming anyone. In the immortal words of Michael Gove in 2016, "I think the people of this country have had enough of experts." So the UK statistics prove. -
There were hundreds of years of racism prior to the war. The Chinese, who were excused from the camps, were still "<deleted>" to Americans. Americans of Japanese descent volunteered to join up and were often sent on suicide missions. Germans had been one of the largest immigrant groups in the US but could not be distinguished by their features so evaded internment. Such a sad tale.

The only real way to play the game is to have 4 sitting on a bench next to each other.

Personally, I say sawasdi krub to younger people and lower ranking staff. If they wai then I wai back. In Japan, if someone bows I bow back. If an Indian says namaste and puts their palms together i do the same. It's their culture and ît isn't our job to decide if it's good or not.

I seen to remember an article on AN about usufruct agreements. Mine says I can use it for the rest of my life. Neither divorce nor disagreement can change that. I can knock it down and make an orchard and don't need to replace the building like I would in a lease. Even land owned by my spouse passes to me upon her death and i have one year to sell it. Good to have some cash in my old age

How “no-vote censure” can guard against post-election implausibility

There's still time for parties to be dissolved. It's hard to guess. -
Not one global media outlet was ever able to explain how a balloon with no propeller or jet engines was able to guide itself over sensitive targets. The wind at 50,000 feet exceeds 57 MPH and at times reaches 247 MPH. How they were said to "Hover" over sensitive targets shows how the media is able to excite the public with silly news.

Pattaya Pioneers Free Condom Machines Named “Love Bang, Love Safe”
Purdey replied to snoop1130's topic in Pattaya News
This is an excellent idea and about time too. There are still a lot of people with HIV who don't tell their partners. Using condoms can bring down the risk. -
The weird part is historically a policeman gets promoted by paying money gained through corruption. That surely means every police general had to go through this process in order to become a general. So what do they do? They appoint a police general to investigate other policemen and they say all this with a straight face. Couldn't they find an institution like Treasury to investigate tax avoidance?

Cabinet approves tourist fee of 150-300 baht for all foreign tourists
Purdey replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Most tourists will not even know about this if included in the price of the air ticket. In terms of the overall cost of the holiday, it is nothing.
