Most EV's in Thailand have LFP batteries and use no Cobalt. Whether the power to charge them comes from coal or not is irrelevant unless Thailand doesn't have a plan to transition to renewables, which it does. Currently, 12% of Thailand's electricity comes from renewables, the government has a plan to more than triple that in the next 12 years. And it will continue past that. The switch to EV's and renewables is all part of a master plan. What environmental issues does mining Lithium have?

You are talking about Cobalt. None of my family's EV's have any Cobalt in them.

This will trundle along until election time and then there will be a flurry of activity and they can only introduce it if they are elected. I don't see how this is anything other than vote buying.

Mining of Lithium isn't a problem and most EV's don't use Cobalt anymore, it's only high-performance versions that use Cobalt, enlightened EV owners here prefer not to buy EV's with NMC batteries because they last half as long as LFP and are more prone to thermal runaway. With Thailand's hot climate, LFP is a much preferred battery. EV batteries are predicted to last 20 years and there is a burgeoning market for second use in solar power installations. It also makes sense to recycle them as mining lithium is expensive.

Somebody I know asked me 2 years to loan them 250,000 baht. I wouldn't call him a friend. He said he only needed it till he sold his house then they were moving to Australia. His wife had been taking his money, emptied his safe and savings and borrowed from loan sharks who were threatening violence. He never left her. I refused. Firstly, I don't lend money and secondly, as soon as he sold his house he was heading to Australia, undoubtedly with my 250k too if I loaned him it. A year later I got a phone call from him, he called me a b?st?rd for not lending him a measly 250k and he told me he was leaving and to watch my back. I knew immediately what was coming. He built a small housing development in Rayong and the tax people came along with a demand for all his profit. Sure enough, a few weeks later I got the call from the Revenue Dept in another province asking for my name, passport number etc. Another week later and I got the call from the local Revenue Dept, I told them who my accountant was (well known to them), he met them and that was the end of the matter.

If last year your bank only offered 10% growth, then this year the 50% interest rate would be a growth of 400% of interest rates.

We had the Pajero Sport 2.4 petrol, converted to LPG and I test drove the 3.0V6, it was definitely better than the 2.4 but it wasn't as good as the 2.5 diesel. You will probably find most of them on the market have been converted to LPG, I wouldn't want a high mileage LPG conversion, they may have even take the conversion out so look carefully for signs it used to be LPG, I think it's supposed to say something in the Tabien Rod. If the 3.0v6 is cheaper than the 2.5 diesel then IMHO it's a bargain.

Let me explain the maths to you. For example and this is only an example, let's go with 5,600 EV's sold in December 2024 this year. If the number of total cars sold is only 37,000 (31,400 ICE) then I would have achieved that 50% growth. Here's another example and this is only an example, let's go with 7,280 EV's sold in December 2024 this year. If the number of total cars sold is only 48,100 (40,820 ICE) then I would have achieved that 50% growth.

Not only EV's, reputable manufacturers like Suzuki and Mercedes too. Perhaps the EV makers tried to rip us off with their first round of pricing and now they are being more reasonable? It wouldn't be the first time any automaker had done that.

What you fail to realise is there are 2 scenarios where I am right, and one of them doesn't need to increase the physical number of EV's sold. Do you get it now?

ExpatOilWorker would say you're failing to understand maths. What I am saying is that the percentage of EV's sold in December 2024 will show a 50% growth over the percentage sales of EV's in 2023 as a whole. In other words (taking your 6 months figures) 9.89% uplifted by 50% would be 14.84% or higher. I think we will be at a market share of around 15% by December.

We have to remember that the entire automarket is depressed this year so counting vehicles compared with last year is meaningless. It's far more relevant to compare market share this year to last year to see what consumers are actually doing. EV's are in a growth market with every month of the last 6 months showing an increasing market share. It's very relevant to look at trends. I wouldn't be surprised if the growth rate is up at 40 or 50% by the end of the year compared to last year. I know you would prefer it not to be, but I'm afraid EV's are definitely becoming more and more consumer's choice. Open your eyes (and your mind) Vinny, EV's are everywhere you look.

I took them from your figures Vinny. Going from 9.89% to 11.13% is a growth rate greater than 12% Going from 9.89% to >13% in July is a growth rate greater than 33%

Massively increased market share for EV's in 2024, a greater than 12% growth in percentage market share this year. Over 33% growth in July 2024 alone over whole year 2023.

This Swiss guy from what I have read seems to have many anger issues and no filter on violent action. It's better for all of us here if people like him are deported and banned, every time something like this happens it reflects on all of us.

This can best be answered by @Gweiloman who has a Haval H6. I can answer for BYD Seal, MG4 and MG EP+ which had zero faults. Meanwhile my German EV had to be trailered to Bangkok twice for warranty claims.

And while you're at it, include the percentages, it would be interesting to compare the percentage of cars in those numbers that were EV's, last year, compared to this year.

A well thought out and well qualified post. I guess 9,694 charging stations across Thailand is not enough for you? Strange but the thousands of EV owners aren't experiencing any problems, I bow to your superior knowledge.
