    It's true!

Only the other day I was trying to buy a pair of Raybans in a Central.

I asked the shop assistant "Can these frames take graded glasses? A very simple question.

You'd think I was asking a summary of the Upanishads. The girl started babbling in some incoherent way, whatever it was it was not English.

I just had to walk away, no point. And this happens all the time, some Thai person tries to say something in English and you can't understand a single word!

If you want to buy a pair or RB and change the lenses - That is normally no problem. But you need a place that do proper prescription  glasses - I assume you want lenses cut and inserted ?  If the RB frames have screws then very easy. If its 'pop in' type then it can be a bit harder.  If you are in Pattaya  - go to Euro Optics - The owner speaks English (she is Indo or from Philippines - I can not remember) - She can get anything fitted with Hoya or Pentax lenses. Great customer service and no hard sell.

Better education and schools more like.

Though I guess the very original Thai alphabet-equivalent makes learning English harder than for Indonesians or Malays.

Yes agree that the Roman Alphabet makes it easier ... One less thing to learn when you have to learn a new language ... I am determined to 'understand' more Thai .. both written and spoken ... but its hard work ???? ...

Malay and 'Indo' is easy to pronounce ...  Just look at what Singapore did when they got kicked out of Malaysia after independence  - They all spoke Chinese ... But they knew that to make anything out of that little speck of land they had (Island) .. They had to go for quality and not quantity - Hence education and 'law and order' was top of the agenda.  Then being practical they made English the official language.  But Singapore is just 'work work' .. 'eat' 'eat' ... ????    .....  I take Thailand any day over Singapore for 'living' ... But I have to say that Malaysia is a very close second ....

Education in Malaysia and Indonesia is better. The English level in Indonesia and Malaysia is significantly higher than in Thailand.

They have real problems with speaking other languages in Thailand, even an easy one like English.

and consider that Malaysia in many ways is a country of 'immigrants' ... Or people who 'came to help the British' ... Strong tradition of English ...  I have not much personal experience with Indonesia. But I understand have very many local dialect.  Hence again English become a a very 'practical alternative' ..  Many also want to work abroad to earn more money ....  ????.

Do Thai people have this phobia, is that why they don't teach English at schools here? Because let's face it, Thais' English is frankly shocking.

How come Indonesians and Malaysians can speak such good English but when Thais do you can't understand a word?

I think you know very well why English is generally well understood in both Malaysia and Indonesia ... ???? ....

Depends who you mean by we, most education systems are far better than Thai government schools, whose purpose appears to be drilling into them what to think, not how to think.

I see nothing wrong with a school uniform - Many countries have them. At least they all 'look the same' ..

Maybe they should move with the times and pick something more progressive and forward thinking .... ????

TBH, I too Google very often, to improve my knowledge and learn new things.

I am not ashamed to admit (or feel I will lose face) that I don't know something. I still like to keep learning new things that interest me.

I am trying to understand why you feel the OP is seditious... Sometimes, it is our own attitude that makes us make wrong interpretations, IMHO.

Frequent self-evaluations are very beneficial, I believe.

He who thinks he knows everything, actually knows very little ...... Me thinks. ???? ... But what do i know ?

But the reality is what it is. Both in europe, and in thailand.

Life is a bitch and then you die. Cant help it.

The village is actually Doem Bang, about 20mins from Singburi.

It still doesn't sound like it would be worth the hassle leasing the land, collecting payment.

Fortunately we wouldn't need the income from it, so it isn't something we need the money from.

Now if we were able to buy a smaller plot of land, I wouldn't do anything on the land............but it's extremely hard to find land in the 5-6rai range

So if we end up buying a larger piece of land at the price I want, I wouldn't want it to go to waste.

We started to chat about growing fruit on it, possibly

Again, this is all just throwing ideas around.

Some good info by a lot of posters, I appreciate it..............

At the end of the day ... If the plot is large enough and you are not is a financial need for it to generate income. Then its just 'something to do' .. Have someone grow fruit or plant trees or whatever .... I am sure it will provide you with endless opportunities for good stories and keep you 'busy' without having to worry about the financial implication.

One poster mentioned ruts from heavy vehicles. If the rut has a couple of mm of water in it the tyre will aquaplane and every driver here knows the instant response is to grab a big handful of steering and slam your foot on the brake and, especially in a pick-up, without touching the clutch pedal.

    ????????

dang ... No hope for me then ... I have an automatic .... I know something was not right ????
