I'm in the camp of those who happen to think that those old Elite packages were value for money for people who wished to stay in Thailand long-term, but didn't qualify for any other long-term visa/extension. But really, you're exaggerating here, how could it pay for itself "in a few months". That's just hyperbole. It's essentially a long-term tourist visa, and a regular tourist visa would cover "a few months" - at a much lower price.

It's your responsibility to check the stamp you get upon arrival. That being said, if you go to immigration, chances are they'll fix it for you and make it 60 days.

If true, that's just a "local rule" of that particular border crossing to allow a quick out-in border bounce. It's obviously a good idea to follow whatever guidance the border run company provides you with, even if this particular rule sounds nonsensical.

That's the only question I can answer with confidence. Foreigners can use those automated gates for departure only. The idea was to move more IOs to arrivals as a result, so both should be smoother.

Based on what would you be applying, do you have a Thai wife or Thai children? Otherwise you can only get another 30 days, added to your initial 30 days given when you entered. In either case, depending on your local immigration office, you can usually apply a couple of weeks before your permission to stay expires. There are some exceptions though, someone might be able to advice if you let us know where you plan to apply.

Please be aware that Cambodian immigration will probably charge you an extra fee (typically about 300 baht) to allow you to return to Thailand on the same day. That's pretty much standard, as officially, you are required to stay overnight.

There is (or used to be) an alert for IOs after 6 visa exempt entries, meant to signal to the IO that this is a frequent visitor under the visa exempt scheme who needs extra scrutiny. The official rule was indeed rescinded, but that doesn't stop some IOs from still using it as a guideline for their scrutinizing of visa exempt entries. In reality, there isn't anything you can do when you encounter such an IO (s/he certainly won't be impressed by a link to the website saying that the rule was rescinded). If anything, being polite has a higher chance of success than being argumentative or coming across as entitled.
