  1. Found out today that they are 3 more girls from the crash in Pattaya hospital, 12 years old, two are on critical list one is improving. All with head injuries. As to wearing helmets on the motorbike, I made leaflets (in Thai) about statistics of road fatalities as a resort of not wearing helmet and I pointed out that it would be good example for the pupils, if teachers started wearing head protection. Nobody took any notice and it was treated as a big joke. You can’t win; they think they know better .

  2. I was told that Rayong hospital did not treat the girl , because they have no specialist doctor for head injury.

I just had a private message to close this story.

I don’t understand your reasoning. What is wrong with that story? You have stories on forum, all the time bashing the culture and the people and you keep that on. This is a genuine story and nothing wrong with people knowing about it. I don’t understand why you have people arguing about something like that. Weird.

  3. Don't want to sound too harsh and uncaring for surely it is a sad thing when any life is lost through the negligent or criminal act of another. I am sure your feelings of loss are heartfelt. However, maybe the Thais you say are not too upset about it express their grief in different (more inwardly directed ways). Maybe they also understand that this girl's death was not the first and will surely not be the last of its type and that outward expressions of extreme grief, anger, frustration (ala typical Western reaction to such an event) about it will not bring the girl back nor provide any condolence to her family.

Reminds me of the story I read somewhere about a murder that took place in some Thai village. Even though the perpetrator was known, there was no great pressure to bring that person to justice. (And it was not because the person was someone of influence or someone in brown or something like that.) They understood that no matter what punishment was handed out, the deed was done and nothing would bring the murdered person back. Any further action would only cause further discord and disharmony in the village and so nothing was done. They left it up to karma to work its way.

In a similar way, when that crazy man killed those Amish girls a few months back in USA, the Amish immediately forgave him his evil deed and even went to console HIS family over what he had done and let them know that they (the Amish) had forgiven their relative his heinous crime. They too understood that to keep their rage inside them and press for revenge/vengeance only hurts first of all themselves and secondly the family of the killer. It will also not reverse the act that had been done.

I understand this, but it still felt strange

  4. Accident in Klaeng

One of my students – 14 years old girl died today, because Rayong hospital would not treat her, so they transferred her to Bangkok hospital in Pattaya and all that moving apparently killed her. Minibus taking children to school in Klaeng was in collision with large truck and the truck driver did not stop.5 children are in Rayong hospital with various injuries. She was very good girl, great student, very interested in English language, but because of the great inefficiency of rescue service she is dead. Let’s hope none of us will ever relay on ambulance service in Rayong area. Another young life lost, before she had a chance to enjoy her life. She wanted to be a doctor. Very sad.

Did the school bus have seat belts? No? Thought so...

seat belts??I don't think they know what that is.The Thais are strange lot. You know , I was lot more upset about this then the Thai teachers, who known this girl for years.

  6. Throughout our marriage, my wife has always stood by my side. She had to.

    We've only got one chair.

I was woken up this morning by a tap on the door. I must remember to get the

    plumber to take it off.

A man walked into a bar. Ouch.........It was an iron bar.

A woman told her doctor, 'I've got a bad back.' The doctor said, 'It's old age.' The woman said, 'I want a second opinion.'

The doctor says, 'OK. You're ugly as well.'

A man is trying to sell his dog. So he stops another man and says, 'Wanna buy a dog? He's very clever look at this.' He throws a stick into the pond and says, 'Fetch that, Rover.' The dog gets up on his hind legs and walks across the water and gets the stick. 'Thats no good to me mate,' said the man. 'He can't swim.'

A man went to the doctor and said, 'I need help urgently. I keep dreaming that women come into my bedroom and I keep pushing them away.' The doctor said, 'What do you want me to do?'And the man said, 'Cut my arms off.'

A woman phoned her husband and said, 'The carburettor is full of water.' 'Where's the car?'

the man said. 'In the river,' she replied.

I'm on a whiskey diet. I've lost three days already.

I went to see the doctor the other day. I had to. He was ill.

A man goes to the doctor. The doctor tells him that he has three minutes to live. 'Doctor

what can you give me?' The man says. 'A hard boiled egg,' says the doctor.

This Irish man backed this horse on a ten pence accumulator and it won thousands and

thousands of pounds. He went to the bookmaker who said, 'I'm not a very big bookmaker,

I'm not one of the top line bookmakers, I'll tell you what I'll do, I'll give you a thousand pound

each week and we'll go on like that.' The Irish man said, 'I'm not having that give me my ten pence back.'

I went to the doctor the other day, I said I've broke my leg in three places. He said, 'Don't go to those places.'

I hurt my arm. I went to the Doctors to get it mended. After, I asked the Doctor if when its mended could I play the piano?

He said yes. I said, 'That's funny I couldn't play it before.'

A policeman stopped me the other night, he taps on the window of the car and says: 'Would you please blow into this bag,

Sir' I said: 'What for, Officer?' He says, 'My chips are too hot.'

    .

I met this man at the airport and I asked him if he`d like to share a taxi with me. He said he would, I said, 'You take the engine, I`ll take the wheels!'

I went into the bank today. I said, 'Could you check my balance?' - They pushed me over!

I bought this budgie...I went to a pet shop and bought him a cage, a mirror, a ladder, a bell, a string and ball, a little plank to walk on, a bath.....Then, a few days later I found him lying on his back, gasping! I said, 'little Budgie, please don`t die! I bought you a cage, a mirror, a ladder, a bell, a string and ball, a plank to walk on , a bath....I bought you everything that money can buy......Don`t do this to me, don`t die!!!! Why are you lying on your back?' Then the budgie looked up at and croaked his final croak....'That pet shop where you bought the cage, the mirror, the string and ball, the bell, the ladder, the bath,'my mate asks, 'Was there any food there?'

I knocked at my friend's door and his wife answered the door. I said 'Is Jim in?' She didn't reply, just stood

there looking at me. So I asked again. Just then a woman appeared at his wife's elbow. 'Sorry luv' she said

'We buried him last Thursday.' 'He didn't say anything about a pot of yellow paint before he went, did he?'

A man goes into a petshop - He says, 'I'd like to buy a wasp please.' The shopkeeper says, 'Sorry Sir, but

we don't sell wasps.' Man says, 'But you've got one in the window!!'

I got on a train the other day and sat next to a young woman reading a book called Sex Statistics.

'Any good?' I asked. 'Fascinating. American Indians have the widest manhood and Polish men the

longest. By the way, I'm Jane.' 'Hi', I replied, 'I'm Tonto Polanski.'

My back is killing me. I've strained it. I was playing piggy-back, with my little boy, and I fell off.

  7. You were lucky. We lived for three months in a paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six in the morning, clean the paper bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down t' mill, fourteen hours a day, week-in week-out, for sixpence a week, and when we got home our Dad would thrash us to sleep wi' his belt.

Luxury. We used to have to get out of the lake at six o'clock in the morning, clean the lake, eat a handful of 'ot gravel, work twenty hour day at mill for tuppence a month, come home, and Dad would thrash us to sleep with a broken bottle, if we were lucky!

Well, of course, we had it tough. We used to 'ave to get up out of shoebox at twelve o'clock at night and lick road clean wit' tongue. We had two bits of cold gravel, worked twenty-four hours a day at mill for sixpence every four years, and when we got home our Dad would slice us in two wit' bread knife.

Right. I had to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night half an hour before I went to bed, drink a cup of sulphuric acid, work twenty-nine hours a day down mill, and pay mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our Dad and our mother would kill us and dance about on our graves singing Hallelujah.

And you try and tell the young people of today that ..... they won't believe you.

  8. I had 10 year old girl in my classroom with high temperature and very swollen hand, who was bitten by centipede and her parents, told her its OK, she has to go to school. Took her to the office and none of the teachers or headmistress were interested. When I suggested to take her to doctor, it was greeted with great amusement and obviously nobody did anything. When I suggested that I will take her, headmistress forbid me to do so., with explanations that the parents would be very angry with the school. That was one week ago and she is still not back in school., but her friends told me that she will be back Monday and she is OK.

  9. Once my wife had a call at work that our house has been broken into. She rushed home and found the police with the villain outside the house. Apparently neighbor call the police, they came and found this man standing inside our living room. He told them that he could not find anything to nick and looked very unhappy. Lol. They took him away and that was the end of the story.

  10. It is very much depends what you are looking for. Rayong is a pleasant place, with some good shopping and nice markets. It is no a touristy place and you can live there quite cheaply. The local beaches and sea is not the fantastic destination, mostly frequented by local people, so unfortunately lots of plastic bags and rubbish is left on the sand. The sea is not that clean and if you are into snorkeling or diving you will have to go to the small islands near by. Koh Samet is close and its nice for short breaks. I have been here for two years now and local people are friendly and they really don’t try to rip you off much. Weather seems to be quite constant here, no great extremities. West from Rayong are few big chemical factories so try to avoid that part of Rayong.

  12. I have been teaching at private school and my wages are paid in cash every month. I am thinking for changing my visa to marriage visa and on the net it said that I need minimum 3 months of a tax record. I have asked in the school about this and was told that none of the teachers are paying tax and school is tax exempt. Anybody come across this before and is this right? Seems really strange, I thought everybody has to pay tax. I have asked the school secretary, director, and wages office and everybody insists that this is true. Any comment please?

  14. I really don’t know why you all saying that teaching English is hard job with little money. I have been teaching here for two years, with working permit , teachers licence and no problem with visa.its great job, nice kids and money is enough for decent living. I don’t get any money from England. It all depends what you want, I have nice house, great garden, sea around the corner, good wife. I live better then my teacher friends in UK. It all really comes to what you want from life.

  15. A checkered Keelback for sure. We have one in our garden and my young visitor from England, who is a Vet, confirmed the name. Apparently they have a poison, but can’t really bite you because their poisons teeth are at the back of the jaw.
