I was never in that category. I always said that the only way out was a vaccine but now, thank Buddha, they are starting to roll out. Just as it was a mistake to underestimate the seriousness of the situation last March, it is a mistake not to now factor in the likely impact of mass vaccination. Lockdown is not a natural state, we will now slowly return to normality.

Until the world has herd immunity, travel needs to be approached cautiously: As Mullen says, “being overly, or prematurely, confident about the vaccines’ effectiveness can lead to putting people in other countries at risk. Travel gives us a chance to contribute to their faltering economies. But contributing to disease spread undermines that.”

Again, 90% of the posters here on ThaiVisa are operating from a deep-seated desire to see Thailand explode. What has actually happened is that an important (but not vital) industry paused for a year. Millions of workers, most low-wage, returned to their villages. The hotels and airports remained standing. A few elite families had to stop inhaling money for a year but are unlikely to run out of food.

It all starts up again once the government can plausibly claim that the most vulnerable have been vacinated, allowing them to welcome the filthy foreigners back in. Vaccinated filthy foreigners. They will point to the fact that every other country has adopted the same approach. Other major destinations have ALREADY started. By the summer they will all be scrambling to get their slice of the biggest tourism boom in decades as pent-up demand kicks in. The hotels will be unlocked and dusted. The workers will board buses and return from the provinces. Everyone will continue on as before.
 

I've set a reminder in my diary to find you in the forums in several months to see how world travel and tourism is going. 

Many of us predicted where we are now whilst many people thought this thing would blow over in a couple months.

Or risk getting stranded somewhere like millions of people all over the world. These Thai officials are fantastically juvenile minded. They think no better than young children. No wonder the country is so underdeveloped.

Sorry, as much as most of us love certain aspects of Thailand, we all know the grandiose Thai plans are likely to be abject failures. It's almost guaranteed.

This was long the official figures from the State. However, they finally admitted recently that it was at least 20%. And that is official tourist money. Does not include gray market and black market spending. It's likely over 30% Thai GDP, especially when sex is included. 

Of course, they Thais are embarrassed by such a heavy reliance on foreign tourism.

Yes, the vaccine does not prevent a person from acquiring the virus and becoming a carrier. It should in most cases prevent a carrier from becoming infectious but no guarantee. Ultimately it's to prevent a person from becoming seriously ill because your body should have developed antibodies.

That means only 3 in other provinces and I am guessing that Chonburi will be zero or one as it has been in the past 5 days.

The "red-zone" restrictions are not due to be reviewed until the end of the month, but with the inter-provincial travel ban in place is it not time to immediately open up local restaurants and shops for local people to use?

Depends on if one thinks the testing in Thailand is very accurate, reasonably accurate, very inaccurate or deliberately underreported. 

Thailand still has one of the least aggressive testing programmes in the world. 

Testing kits, especially from China, which is where most of the kits in Thailand come from, are horribly unreliable. See reports by Chinese whistle-blowers on same. 

Mass tourism will not be back for any of this year, anywhere on earth. No countries. 

It might not be back all of next year either as people rebuild their finances and governments open up. 

This is a multi year recovery. Not get jabbed with a vaccine and 10s of millions travelling to Thailand. This is 2-5 year recovery IF the vaccines are efficacious.

World bank generally bases these things on a combination of survey data and data provided by the governments in each country. And therefore only gross approximates of the truth. And, often wildly unreliable
