  1. From update: a Norwegian friend of hers intervened to try to calm the man down as he had been shouting and behaving erratically. However, during the confrontation he was stabbed in the stomach. 8.30pm on the same day, a man from The Netherlands was also reportedly stabbed
  2. First, you are correct. There is a public holiday until the 16th October - Pchum Ben. Banks will be closed but there are many ATMs. Some Money Exchange agencies will be open for tourists. A visa on arrival at airport will cost 30US$ for 30 days (ATMs in arrival hall near Immigration in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh). May I suggest you keep a pen in your pocket to complete the Visa Application Form and Customs Declaration Form during flight before arrival, this saves a lot of time. The visa will fill a full page in your passport. PLEASE NOTE if you decide on Siem Reap, the old airport (REP) will be active until the 15th October 2023 when ALL air traffic will then be diverted from midnight on the 16th October to the new airport (SAI). Unfortunately the new airport SAI is almost 50kms from Siem Reap City compared to the old's 5 kms. Chinese Belt & Road initiative!!!!! I shall be "flying thru" from SAI on the 9th November 2023 to Chiang Mai so I cannot comment on new transportation arrangements into Siem Reap until then.

  6. Interesting and may explain this in today's Khmer media. No mention of Chinese tourists BUT: "This proposal was made during a meeting between Sok Soken, Minister of Tourism, and Mr. Patrick Muphy, US Ambassador to Cambodia, on October 10, 2023, to discuss how to improve as a Cambodia-US partner, especially to promote tourism and examine opportunities to strengthen tourism cooperation. The Minister pointed out that US tourists are Cambodia’s main target market, being among the top 10 markets both before and after the COVID-19 crisis" https://www.khmertimeskh.com/501374880/minister-of-tourism-asks-the-us-side-to-help-attract-tourists-and-investors-to-cambodia/ Moderators please remove if considered irrelevent.

  11. It might be your opinion but it is certainly not mine. For three years now here in Cambodia, I use a regular friendly tuk-tuk driver who speaks and understands English. He is a family man with a young daughter and a pleasant wife who runs a laundry (which I use) and a general store. They are great examples of humanity and always willing to help me when I go shopping or sightseeing. Tuk-tuks are a major form of transport, especially here in Siem Reap. Forget baht buses and taxis, there are'nt any. IMHO the abnoxious lady boys and prostitutes that roam the streets and frequent the bars in Pattaya, Phuket etc.etc. are the lowest examples of humanity!

  16. Today, it is impossible for your airport fees to exceed the total cost of your air ticket, unless you are taking Khmer souvenirs (eg wooden carvings) back home via checked in baggage. Current status: Entry to Siem Reap. Yes, one has to pay for tourist visa on entry (30-41$US depending on method used to get it). Exit from Siem Reap is FREE. Personally, I have never had to pay on leaving Cambodia during many flights in the past 8 years!
