not sure why some posters think that the equivalent of 20,000 baht is a lot of money to be carrying around especially as a tourist and maybe he went through or was planning to go through a border at some point.
why wouldn't he be able to open a thai account? yes, foreign tourists can still open bank accounts despite what some may experience, that's another old and long boring thread altogether. (as a side note, IMO certain 'helpers' that have sprung up offering services to open accounts for tourists for around 5,000 baht are part of the problem as they just make it harder for people to do it themselves as the bank staff will be getting used to their kick backs in the same way some immigration offices do.
here have a couple of thousand baht to do the job you are supposed to do anyway.
and perhaps there was a million in his account as he has or plans to do a retirement visa. if he is already retired and living here perhaps he is a tourist visiting the south hence why he was at chumphon train station and hence why he called himself a tourist.
1000 baht, tight bugger

She is fortunate she was able to board a flight anywhere unlike the thousands of foreign household staff imprisoned, documents destroyed, physically and sexually abused by both male and female saudis and mercilessly murdered every day.

Good on the family for refusing the money either way and also on the Pol Colonel if the stance he describes is taken, i just hope the courts punishment is fitting to the seriousness of the crime

What ?
she is in Thailand - is an adult - has broken no Thai laws - has broken no international laws - is not wanted by Interpol - Thailand has no right to detain this woman, they should not have gotten involved, some uneducated wooden top decided to take this path and abuse this persons rights for no reason at all.
Just another example of uneducated people in jobs they are not qualified to do
This abuse of rights now has the attention of the world - shame on you Thailand
i don't know the facts or the laws.
you say thailand has no right to detain her. I didn't know they had. Just refused her entry into thailand which is why she is airside in a hotel.
whether that means she will be allowed to board a flight to australia hasn't been mentioned yet, or i have missed that part.
If she is airside, is she even considered to be in thailand and subject to thai law?
i'll admit i know little of the laws in these circumstances in these cases so will leave further comments to others.
I hope she is allowed to go to australia but am fairly certain she will be back in SA soon.

hopefully Thailand makes the correct decision here.
what decision?
does thailand have any decision to make legally? I am not sure.
The girl is still air side and hasn't come through thailand immigration and seemingly is being held by saudi authorities who have her travel documents.
Is there anything thailand can do about it?
I hate to say it but I would expect she'll be on a plane back to SA soon.

"The poll of more than 25,000 voters was commissioned by the People's Vote campaign, which is spearheading an increasingly vocal push for a second referendum on Brexit."
I may be wrong but most polls commissioned by a non impartial source seem to get the result they require to meet their agenda.

The world can watch, Thailand is pretty thick skinned and guilt is not something i have seen a lot of thais struggle with.
The circumstances of this case are unusual and I'm not sure the Thai authorities would be sure of what to do both legally and morally.
It will be interesting to see what happens, though I suspect although i hope I am wrong, that she'll be on her way back SA shortly and for that I feel for the girl.

Would rather not risk it with the morning flight and if there is any traffic etc. any other tips regarding applying, places to stay, things to do around the area?
it would not be a risk to go on an early morning flight to apply the same day unless there was a fairly long delay on the flight or you were very unlucky.
even with traffic the consulate is very close to the airport, only about 20 minutes.
lots of hotels nearby (budget and otherwise) there's the war remnants museum a short walk from the consulate.
Au Lac hotel is cheap and a short walk to the consulate and has been recently renovated.
it depends what you like doing and your budget i suppose.

24 minutes ago, Justgrazing said:No I haven't but know of someone who demolished their kitchen extension trying to boil off butane gas that is used to extract oil from bud's that are packed into a glass vial with a small hole at one end then Butane gas ( a lot ) is forced through under pressure passing through the Bud's and exiting the other end carrying the oil from the buds .. The dangerous ( really dangerous ) part comes from having to " boil " of the Butane to be left with oil that then solidifies into a toffee like substance called " shatter " and is done by placing the bowl into which the the Butane and oil have drained into a pot of water that is brought to the boil ( electric hotplate is best under no circumstances should a naked flame or gas cooker be used ) .. It is at this point that you best leave the room because if it goes off it will go like a bomb .. as my mate found out .. The inevitable questioning by the Poleese and Fire service followed fairly swiftly .. If you get it right Shatter is what you're left with .. Get it wrong and you're house is quite often wrecked ..
Edit .. The O P details on this is sparse but the fact that gas is mentioned makes me wonder if he was using a similar process particularly the bit at the end about it being highly valued on the Thai market as Shatter is considerably more expensive than just Bud' because of the danger in producing it ..
your 'mate' eh? ????

“I want them to ease the widening gap. The middle-class keep paying taxes but the poor don’t. And the rich usually evade taxes,” she said.
that's not really a new years resolution and certainly not something that's likely to change in any of our lifetimes anywhere in the world.

"The 4,000 EM wrist-cuffing devices – which resemble smart watches – have been rented by the department at a cost of Bt74 million from a private company for 21 months, according to Prasarn."
So the bloke fitting the watches and his mates can buy some more gaudy god awful jewelry.
I wonder if this private firm is Chinese? ????

proof of address not required, think they use the spouse housebook for that. original marriage certificate is a must. no bank or finance details required and no letter from spouse required.
note as brit tim says above. you can only get a single entry at vientienne, for a one year multiple it needs to be done in savannaket with the same docs. multiple entry can also be done in saigon, vietnam with the same docs plus a letter from the spouse requesting the visa. think that's probably where you heard about the spouse letter.

I award the author no points and may God have mercy on his soul. And actually it turns out that the embassy letters being phased out next year is actually going to be a very positive thing at least for those of us who fall within Thai law living here on long stay visas. I'm glad it'll save me a trip to the embassy all the way down in Bangkok at the end of next year 2019 into 2020 and that $50 dollar fee for their piece of paper. I actually just renewed my extension recently for 2019 and it honestly wasn't that hard. I've seen a few different immigration offices and I guess I'd have to see them all to understand what everyone was complaining about because I've never had any problems in 5 years of living here. In fact I got my extension done a little early this year because of all the fear mongering but at least now I don't have to deal with it in January because it's already done.
i find your post a little odd. how can you say someone is 'dumber' after reading something and something you say you didn't even read yourself. Then you go off on a tangent talking about the income letter and how you've already done your extension as if anyone really cares.
but hopefully it made you feel a little superior for a few minutes if that was the point of your post.

There was only mention of him and his friends in Patpong Sherlock, not soi 4 Sukhumvit ( Nigerians selling him drugs!! Are YOU drunk?) If his medications did not react with booze in England they would not react in Bangkok ( this certainly was not his first night of drinking) You must be the worst TVF detective in 2018.
he was probably talking about silom soi 4, usually nigerians hanging about selling crap to the gay guys

I wonder if it's for charity or if he's just getting advertising money from NSP.

This guys so dopey that he probably thought the 500 baht rolex he bought on the street was worth 100,000 baht
When I read these kind of stories, especially the LB ones (which this still could be), I often hope that someone back home in their local pub sees the story and prints it out and sticks it next to the bar awaiting their return.

I can only see the insurance getting away with that if she was drunk when she dived into the pool but theres no mention of that. If it's just for diving in a pool then that should be contested by the girl.
So if i have a car crash and get injured my insurance can refuse to payout and tell me driving in thailand is reckless??????

My question is how much can I help her and not get in trouble?
Anything seen as work will get you into trouble.
If you co-owned the villas and/or were married and on a non immigrant visa there may be ways to get a permit but as it stands you could be looking at deportation if caught.

Can't help but wonder what all the afghan and syrian (whatever nationality of the many refugees passing through thailand) families with young kids running around bangkok from place to place avoiding the authorities desperately waiting for their settlement to a 3rd safe country for years think of this.
