Sad story. The guy goes to work, to earn a day's pays for honest work, probably to provide for his wife and kid/s, and doesn't come home, through no fault of his own. He's a victim of a senseless crime, and I doubt any compensation will be forthcoming to his family who will be financially disadvantaged from his death. For a country with a tough stance on drugs and gambling, to have so many die on the roads here is crazy. RIP.

Average monthly salary in Thailand is about 15,000k baht, which is nothing in developed western countries. Vendors know that. If they see a farang involved, they will hold out for more money. Same in the local markets here as well.
