  1. My horn has had no reaction, but I found out their not used to hearing a 650cc bike rev to 10k, that gets a reaction and FAST.

I've had them stop at the corner of CM Ram and HK to look at maps, step out in front of me on my bike, come at me the wrong way on the moat etc etc.

They ignored traffic on the corner. When the first took a step into the road, I reved and she jumped back into the arms of her friends.

The wrong way people did nothing when I flashed my lights, stared blankly when i beeped, but physically jumped when i reved coming head on at them. Showing them a 1 and pointing behind them made them finally realize what was what.

I have also picked up a few choice words along the way...

But I would also like to say, I have seen plenty driving slowly in the slow lane and using turn signals while wearing helmets. The good and bad drivers have been about 50/50 for me, where as I nearly get run off the road at least 3-4x a week on the way to work by Thais...

  2. any news?

No, nothing new; I'd be shocked if the bike turned up now, but who knows?

I have the greenbook and two keys smile.png

Had a friend lose her mio in CM, it showed up 7 months later in Sukhothai, painted matte black, with skinny tires, crap exhaust and neons on it. The idiots were racing or something and when pulled over the greenbook still had her name etc and she got it back.

  3. I still think in feet and inches AND mph...............thumbsup.gif ............smile.png

I've managed to convert my thinking to the metric system when dealing with length and weight. But I just can't accept kph, besides 100kph seeming like a lackluster number, I grew up in the 80's where 55mph and 88mph meant something haha.

  4. post-30367-0-41345500-1384665557_thumb.j

2011 650r, it's my first real bike after years of scooters.

I also have a dream and a 110cc engine swapped Chaly that is always being worked on.

Back to the US in the summer, looks like I will trade in the Ninja for a DL1000 V-strom and a 70's Brit bike.

Gotta love the selection and price of the bikes back in the US, or at least I keep telling myself this to help ease the pain haha.

  5. I ride with a bunch of Harley guys, all Thai, and they are fantastic and extremely polite to everyone. I and two others road kawasaki 650's and they were happy to have us along. But these guys a bit more mature.

As for the pushrod debate, though I have always been more of a Ford fan. GM has always had a winner with the LSX, it's the engine mustang owners, especially the 4.6 guys, secretly wished they got. More power, better response to mods AND better MPG? Stuff sticks around for years and decades because it WORKS.

  6. Its the same for the Honda XRM 125 they sell in the Phils....great bike but not seen anywhere here. They are as common as pig shit in the Phils, partially cause they are so reliable and you can fit a family of 5 on no sweat. Good resale too.

I had one and it was quicker than my Honda XR200 and a dam_n side more comfortable too. Now Im looking to find a street legal, with green book CRF 450..... dreams are free (as they say), but I live in hope

The Raider was Hondas competition when I was in the Phils

XRM is the Nice here isn't it, a few 125cc models, mostly 110. But you can bore them up to 150-180cc easily and well past 200cc if you have the $ and time to keep it maintained.

  7. I have known quite a few of these couples and through my observations I have created a stereotype.

Hippy styled western girls date Thai guys, and for the majority it seems the Thai guy falls into one of the following categories: artist, musician, bar owner. Most of them have long hair or dredds, usually a bit of facial hair and crap quality tattoos.

I don't know the financial situation, but I can speculate that the guy is making very little money.

they have indeed little money... like the Thai multi-millionaire (developer of 9 moo baans with hundreds of homes) i know. i live in one of his communities where he sold recently the last plot of land (1.4 Rai) for 16 million Baht (28,500 Baht / wah²) whistling.gif

will ask him next time we meet what kind of instrument he plays and why he wastes money on haircuts.

Again, I talked about it being a prevalent stereotype that I have seen. It does not mean that I do not know of other couples, like my friend who is a professional drummer for Grammy records and his farang wife. Business owners, hotel and restaurant owers, etc where the Thai man is quite educated and affluent, but I see more of what I mentioned before. I have also met a lot of divorced couples, but that's not so different to to the foreign man / thai woman divorces I see too. And the divorced couples are across the board.

Let's use a round number, if I know 10 Thai male / foreign female couples and 7 of them fit my stereotype is it wrong to state my observations and state that they are merely observations?

When it comes down to it, I really don't care who marries who, it's their lives not mine. All I can do is hope any couple the best.

And I am not trying to be an ass either, I just realized my original post is coming off in a way I didn't mean it to. My interactions, for right or for wrong, has led to that stereotype. Sorry if it was irksome.

    Good observation.

These guys also have the correct alpha attitude, often macho or thugs, and that's what chicks dig for.

Often they are also on a pump-and-dump mission. Nothing wrong with that.

Not true, I know a Thai man (about 35 years old) he writes books and columns about travel in Thailand (in Thai and English, under various pen names) and he and his English wife run a very successful Thai cooking school. She is the same age as her husband and has a Thai passport, they met when the husband was at school in England and have been together for about 10 or 12 years. They have 3 kids, all born in Thailand, and are very obviously a very happy and successful family. They spend about 9 months of the year here in Thailand and 3 months in England where they run a part-time Thai cooking school. Part of the reason for 3 months per year is so that their kids get exposure to Western culture, behaviors, etc., and the kids spend most of the 3 months in England in school.

Of course it's not true in every situation. As I said my exposure to this has led me to make my own stereotype. While some people may immediately cringe at the word, they exist. But there are always oing to be examples that support it or disprove it.

  9. Did a semester abroad here in 2005 and they were not surprised that I moved back in 2006. When I came back to the US in 09 for further studies they were upset and sad when i moved back immediately in 2011. But they did not stop me.

I will be moving back in the summer as my father's health has begun to deteriorate. I'm only 31 so there are years ahead of me and I know I will be back. Furthermore because I will also teach in the US, I will have a decent amount of vacation time, allowing me to visit.
