  1. I was in Thailand with my wife in April/May. I had quite a bunch of money setting in 2 Thai accounts for the past few years. We went down and drew it mostly out. Then to China town, and traded the paper for 5 baht and 10 baht gold ingots.....Easy....and just a easy to sell them at some time in the future. Several shops (no one shop had enough gold for what we wanted) gave us certificates certifying they would buy back the gold for what we paid....not that is a pretty bullish stand to take on any commodity.

While I think buying gold is not a bad idea & if you live in Thailand buy from yowarat is good.

2 points I will like to make on your post

Shops buying back for what you paid! That is impossible..

Second, you said: just a easy to sell them at some time in the future.

Not so shops have close during turbulent time in yowarat at the past for few days

But yes, good to have few baht

  2. To be very clear: you must go to the tax office at the airport BEFORE you check in as you may be required to show the items (never happened to me). Also, when shopping, take your passport as some shops will ask to see it.

Oh yes you right on this one.

At the old airport, presenting a notebook to the VAT for refund.

She smile and said can not do, you have to clear item before customs (long wait)

She was so happy about that, but she did not count I have a friend working for kingpower who took the item and went to the inspection counter for stamps and bring it back to me.

She was furious to give me a refund! Like if I was steeling money from THAILAND

I decide from this time, I will not buy any laptop / mobile phone in this country and will purchases during a oversea trip

  3. The word is out there, yesterday I got a message from a Thai friend asking me my blood type.

A little girl need –A, the message originated from the church service he was attending.

I suggest him to put a topic in pantip.com & told him I am sure the topic was already in thaivisa.com

  4. I put myself on retirement at 40 (12 years ago), after selling my business; I did keep the business freehold and receive rent from it.

I move here, but keep my house as well in Australia.

First 2-3 years was not sure if I was doing the right move, but seeing properties value soaring in the early 2000, now I do not regret it.

    How much you need?

I will say 60000 baht are comfortable for single + some to save.

  5. after the crash of 97 a lot of MBA's started driving taxi's, and within the last year a taxi rank has appeared in my rural neighborhood!!

a sign of the deteriorating economy, a lot more stress on people trying to make ends meet

Yes I feel the same, shop work more hours without increasing taking!

I can see more arguments between Thai in the soi, market & around here.

And will be not surprise if the downturn is blame on the farang as well.

  6. Been here for over 10 years, mostly keep to myself & have a nice life

Just feel more & more aggressions, example shops trying to push items on you, not talking about India tailor, but just the simple fruits stand in fresh food market and the items are second quality.

Shops you know are unreasonable trying to over charge you.

Many shops I know have disappear, today went to a clinic near balhampuu in samseen road, where they have new owner & service so bad I walk away, did use this clinic for over 6 years for different health test.

Now I just try to keep to where I know / who I know

Is it just me? Just a bad planets disposition?

  7. Is that the underground red promise?

A friend living in Samsen road ring me, shoot out in front of his place, 20 shoots about at 7 am.

A car was wash with bullets, one of the leader of the yellow clan in it.

He is the owner of the newspaper; presume going to work in his office at PhraAhit

I think he is ok, but his driver is not.

  8. Looking to buy a kaen in Bangkok. One of decent quality, better than those I see at Big C . . . anyone know where to find one? Also, learn to play kaen books (written in Thai is fine)?

Do you know THE OLD SIAM ? i am pretty sure was about 2 shops selling thai music instruments !

or ask someone to ring a music school to get direction.

  9. Just a little update, a member contacted me regarding these bracelets. They gave me a contact for a large manufactuer of sterling silver jewelery.

I'd just like to point out that at the present moment, I can't afford to order a custom made batch in 200 pieces+ of these bracelets. So I'm looking for either a retailer or a wholesaler who have a much less MOQ, with these already made. I would greatly appreciate any help with regards to where I can get these.

i presume you know around Kowsan road they have wholesaler and retail shop specialise in silver ..

    Mainly in Tanao road

  10. Hi all

I am planning to take my small doggie on holiday with me. I will be driving from Isaan to a beach resort on the Eastern seaboard (not sure where yet)

I would like to take my dog and stay in a bungalow/hut near the beach.

I realise that a lot of hotels will not allow pets, but it may be possible to take a small dog to a bungalow type place.

Has ANYONE done anything similar? Do you know of any resorts that accept dogs?

    Any advice/help appreciated.

You have your own transport that is good.

I took a taxi once to Pattaya with my pug, coming back was problem because of him , they want more and a bad car..

Anyway i know two places who accept small dogs, well behave in Pattaya

Rabbit resort jomtien ( not cheap, but good )

    http://www.rabbitresort.com/

    and

The three Elephants (much better value) name Ruud De Vos tel 038303056

    mobile 0818035415

    give them a call

    Cheers

  11. I couldn't understand why the credit on my phone was always approaching zero, when I hardly ever made calls. I found out that every one of those beeps and unsolicited messages was costing me 2 baht.

AIS could not stop them, so I changed my SIM card and I keep my telephone number a secret. It's the only way.

    AIS stop mine

  12. I want to change Thai Baht to Chinese RMB in Bangkok. Most banks show the rate for selling it but when asked about buying they dont ahve any. I found Bangkok Bank in Silom but their rate was so bad (5.71 , when the rate shown in most places is 5.2). Anyone know of where I can get the best rates of exchange. Thanks

yes they are, i took there some US dollars, my friends use in bangkok the black market (change is much better for the yuan)

  13. I presume we are talking split systems here.

I am no Air Con Guru, do they just clean the dust filter in the unit inside the room, or is there another filter outside in the compressor.

I don’t know f there is a filter out side to clean, but if there is, I could only imagine in BKK how filthy it would be with pollution.

    Any tips are very welcome.

I can not talk about other brand, but the one I have, they open it and take the drum out (inside), plus pressure water jet into the unit(inside).

    outside just pressure water.

I could not do the inside !

What I have found with the Mitsubishi is it is a top quality unit, save money on running cost compare to the one I have before.

But expensive to buy and need cleaning often
