Can you point me to this? I'm reading the METV visa additional information section on a couple of Thai consulates (Canberra, Melbourne) and they state "Copy of updated bank statement providing of adequate finances (THB 200,000 per person)" - nothing about 6 months (or any duration), nothing else about monies including "pension or earned income"

    UK.

I got one in the UK (Consulate in Glasgow) a fortnight ago and there was no time requirement for money in the bank.

The yellow book is not compulsory yes I know it's for a farang,

Sorry, your post asked who would do it under particular circumstances and I was suggesting how to do it yourself.

Even if not compulsory, if it's available it may support any application if submitted, maybe if a chanote or Land Reg docs aren't available.  It definitely won't help anything if it's left in a drawer.

Just waiting for some first-hand reports of success before jumping on this one.

Well not quite a report of success, but here's how I fared last night.

Opened Android App on phone and selected Arrival Card, acknowledged Ts & Cs and proceeded to data fill page.  Chose the option to read the MRZ on my passport and the camera came on.  It appeared to draw boxes round each of the target lines in the MRZ, but when pic taken it came back with invalid data and returned to the data entry page.  Every few attempts it put me right back to the Ts & Cs page.

On one occasion it read successfully and I briefly saw the data fields populated, but it jumped back to the Ts & Cs,  and on re-entering the data had gone.

Filled it all in manually or by selecting from the choices displayed, got to the end and submitted it all to get an invalid data error message, but no indication of the error.  Tried removing all non-compulsory fields and changing capitilsation on entries etc and after several attempts eventually got it submitted successfully, but I don't know which exact edit fixed it for me.

The message at the end showed an image and the form number (mid 20s) and a message it would be emailed to me (so I never grabbed the image).

No email received yet (around 14 hours later) so planning on filling a form in on the flight this weekend.

I would mark it about 2 out of 10 from my experience.

PS.  I also ran it on my Window laptop to see if it could grab the MRZ image using that but similar results so didn't go any further.

My condo landlord tried to get the juristic office to do it and they forgot or didn’t know how or didn’t want. She ended going to immigration herself. In Bangkok you can self file if you bring your lease and enter your name on the TM30 form as the possessor.

Unfortunately I won't have a lease as it's through a "friend of a friend" arrangement otherwise that could be a solution for me too if the juristic office refuses.

The cal for your B'Day only allows for current year. would not let me input data by hand.

I get the screen shown here when I tap on the box for DoB and can scroll through month, day and year.  Do you get anything similar?  I should get my visa tomorrow so will probably try this out for the first time, although I think I'll probably complete a regular one on the flight too, just in case.

If someone rents a house and the owners dont live here and the owner is a farang who would do it then?

I was in that position recently and was advised here one potential route was to ask the juristic office if they could do it.  I didn't pursue it as I didn't need to go to immigration, but I'm back again next week and will be in the same position.

I think if the owner is a farang he'll have a yellow book (?) and maybe a chanote and if you can get signed copies of these you may be able to register to file yourself.

Well, I'm not working and earning money. If that was the case, it would be easy for me to get a work visa. I'm a skilled IT worker, but I'm not here for work. And I don't want to stay for five years, so the Elite Visa would be very expensive for something I potentially can get for free now.

Saying your not this, that or the other does not change the fact that you are not a tourist either unfortunately.

It has not offered me the opportunity to scan my passport with the camera. I would have checked before posting whether it now does so . . .

I would suggest "picnic" is the appropriate response.

Here's a screenshot clearly showing the prompt for camera usage.

Whether it is easy or hard to add GPS data to a transmission . . . .  it is no use if it is never used.

So logically from your statement, when it is used it will be of use.  That's good you recognise it could be some use, even if you personally can't see a reason for it.  I can.

My point was, that this app has caused endless frustration for people by being zero help when something is wrong; go back and look through discussion after discussion. The author had time to write GPS code (for no earthly reason that you've suggested, but you need to apologize that maybe there is some reason), but no time at all to write a simple, meaningful error message about anything else.

Again, I agree it's a pretty crappy app and that others have said so.  However, I was initially responding to your post on the permissions required which was just wrong in so many ways.  And as before, just because you can't see a reason does not mean there isn't one.

"I see nonsense in a post (yours in this case)" "your tin foil hat is too tight" So it's acceptable to insult people you disagree with, rather that address the concerns? OK, how about "treetops has an ugly sister", or "his mother wears army boots"? At least for some people, in some circumstances, this system is just plain broken. It has been for years. And immigration does not care. And you saying maybe there's a reason for it (without suggesting anything) doesn't fix the problems.

I took being called an "apologist for any and all Thai stupidity" as being derogatory so responded in kind.  Don't dish it out if you're too precious to accept it back.

In summary, there is nothing wrong and plenty right about this app asking for the permissions it does, despite the fact it has so many other flaws.  Your inability to see this does not make it wrong.

  9. I don't deny it's a bit of a messy app, but you questioned the permissions.  When I run the app it offers me the opportunity to scan my passport (MRZ) for which it needs the camera.  Why would you not want that?

Tagging GPS location data onto a transmisssion is easy enough, and even if it's not checked on submission it may still be valuable.  Saying it does not hurt anything is presumptious and all it means is you can't think of a reason for it.  Others with a different perspective perhaps could.

. . . as you apologists for any and all Thai stupidity like to rattle on about . .

I'm closer to the other extreme from being an apologist, but if I see nonsense in a post (yours in this case) I may be inclined to point it out.  Your point on being wary of permissions is valid, but in this case I think it's just your tin foil hat is too tight.

And why on earth does it need these permissions?

A 90 day report requires no photographs, and nothing in the user interface offers to take any pictures.

Why does it need either the current course or fine location? Can I do a report while standing in Phitsanulak, but not from Chiang Mai? How stupid is that?

Why does it need to read or modify file storage? Most of the information involved hardly ever changes, so once you figure out the right voodoo to get your request accepted, it would be nice to save all the crap on disk for the next annoying 90 report, if nothing else but to prevent typos while re-entering data. But is there such a useful feature? No way.

The camera can be used  to scan the Machine Readable Zone of your passport rather than typing in the details.

I don't know about the others, but it may make temporary files as you step through the process and need to store them, thus needing access to memory.  Location - inside Thailand would be logical, as any reason to report when you're not inside Thailand would be highly dubious.

Why do you think it doesn't need these permissions?

  11. I changed plans to avoid UTP just a couple of months ago due to reports of taxis etc being scared to go on airport grounds, as well as the "official" shared minibus reportedly insisting there were no shared buses and they had to be used as private buses.

I'm not sure how accurate the reports were, or how recent, but same goes for the positive posts above.
