  1. Low risk country then usually OK as you've experienced.  My understanding is that debit cards are OK too.

The mention of a passport copy by theoldgit was from the airlines website (Qatar Airways) in a section about credit card verification, not identification required to fly with them as it appears you have interpreted it.  The full details, including the exact quote can be seen here.

My neighbor, long time retired in BK, plans to go back to UK for up to 10 months. He'd like to know if he'll be able to use his Thai debit cards frequently at atms to withdraw cash while he's there. I don't know which Thai banks he uses. Said I'd post the question for him as he doesn't use TVF. Thanks.

If the answer is yes, does he know how much he'll be charged for using these cards overseas?

I have bought many tickets with Qatar and also with Thai Airways and never been asked to show the card I used when I bought the ticket. I don't know where you're from but showing a copy of your passport or ID when flying Qatar is not accepted. There are two reasons the passport is needed when checking in, as an ID and to check if you have a visa where you're going. Qatar doesn't like if you book a 60 days return trip to Thailand with no visa even if you explain you're going to extend your stay in Thailand.

The requirement of many airlines to selectively request presentation of the credit card used to make a  booking at check in is a fraud prevention tool and has been around for years.  I suspect that you have not seen it because you come from a low risk country, purchase through a travel agent or have some other characteristics that makes the airline think their money is safe.

You have misunderstood the bit about "A copy of the cardholder’s passport or state-issued ID" in the post you quoted.

Has this been sorted... Does it show international transfer??

I've seen no reports to the contrary since it was introduced, but Transferwise insist it's not 100% guaranteed. If they have issues with the "regular" transfer route, their systems could automatically send money via an alternative one, similar to what happened last July that kicked off all the fracas.

I agree with a lot of what you said but I only ever use miles for upgrades. Mostly with Emirates and always from business to first I’ve never been refused an upgrade. Only once did I try to use miles to upgrade from Economy to business and the tax cost made me feel it just wasn’t worth it.

Agreed, the best value for miles is usually found in upgrades rather than ticket purchases.  Emirates shouldn't be charging anything for Economy to Business upgrades unless you were departing from the UK (and a couple of other minor countries) and it's really the government that is demanding higher APD for non economy class tickets rather than Emirates.  It's avoidable by doing your upgrade on board, but that too has its problems.

OP.  I have purchased miles several times on popular on line auction sites so not quite what you're asking about.  All I would advise is be very careful and make sure you fully understand what you're doing.  The  whole area is fraught with danger but the rewards can make it worthwhile.

  6. There is no counter, just a couple of employees occupying a few airport seats, probably a bit closer to Door 7 than 8.  Normally these are ones that back onto the last escalator.  They often have company polo shirts on.

Never tried to book it at short notice (ie from the airport), but not sure how the booking would get to the airport staff as they appear to work from printouts and not any sort of real time computer link.  Would be interested in hearing from anyone that's actually done this.

  7. TO stands for Toshiba as you've no doubt guessed.  NCE is for Natural Colour Enhancer which is a Toshiba approach for colour optimisation on display devices such as projectors.  You can see it mentioned in the link attached.  I suspect the laptop has been connected to a projector at some point and whatever it needed to operate the projector hasn't been removed correctly, leaving you the shortcut to nowhere.  That or the same technology was used by Toshiba maybe in the display driver for the laptop itself.

As to how to remove it, I have used Revo Uninstaller in the past to tidy up partially removed programs, but it sounds you can't find what you'd like to remove, ie whatever is calling the .lnk file, but maybe the above will point you in the right direction.  Alternatively remove any display drivers or anything that looks like it may be related and re-install.

NB.  The above might be totally off the mark, but it's my best shot.
