  1. In Thailand? I use Thai unless the person's English skills are better than my Thai skills. Elsewhere English of course which is widely spoken but far from a universal language. OK. Hypothetical situation to ask your wife. A typical Thai woman, office worker, factory worker or farmer gets on a bus which has a few empty seats, some next to other Thai women, some next to Thai men and an empty seat next to a farang. Which seat does the woman take? And why?
  2. This discussion is about random encounters on a bus not about people who need to work together or are married and require a common language. If you're living in Thailand with your wife you should be learning the local language anyways. Your statement that a Thai bus passenger won't sit next to a farang because "they'll lose face by not understanding the universal language.." is both both naive and a cheap shot at Thais that may have no need or interest in knowing English, they get by just fine speaking Thai. One site claims 13% of world population speaks English the other 20%, take your pick: https://www.reference.com/world-view/percentage-world-speaks-english-859e211be5634567 https://www.babbel.com/en/magazine/how-many-people-speak-english-and-where-is-it-spoken
  3. And you should pay attention the discussion specifically the use of the term "universal language" above. Universal language may refer to a hypothetical or historical language spoken and understood by all or most of the world's population. In some contexts, it refers to a means of communication said to be understood by all humans. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_language
  4. English the universal language? That may come as a shock to the 80% of people on the planet that don't understand English.
  5. Yes retirement extension for me and it does tie up a large sum of money for sure. I've been using the 65,000/month method which is more than I use on a monthly basis during good times living in the boonies. My account has grown rapidly past 18 months with the covid situation so the 800K method makes sense to simply things. I guess another advantage to a marriage extension is employment is possible if one were interested in working.
  6. There's only two types of networks - the ones that know they have been hacked and the ones that don't yet know that they've been hacked.
  7. Encryption doesn't matter once a hacker gains internal access to a network.
  8. That's good information about the bankbook. With Bangkok Bank if you go too long between bankbook updates transactions are consolidated so you loose the line by line record of transactions. I've been stopping by the local bank and using the machine to update my bankbook once a month.
  9. No, you don't understand. You're missing out on the thrill of the big game day. The thrill of victory when all your preparations pay off and you walk out of immigration holding your head high with your fresh stamps in the passport. Or the pain of defeat when your IO opponent pulls some unexpected tricks out of their gamebook and sends you packing, tail between your legs to go home and lick your wounds. It wouldn't be a very exciting game if the outcome were always guaranteed and there was no pain.
  10. On a recent search I saw this one. Based on over a 1,000 buyer ratings and the high seller ratings I think it looks good for 482 baht but I don't have one myself. PC or Mac. https://www.lazada.co.th/products/dvd-writer-external-cddvd-rw-usb-30-dvd-external-dvd-rw-geek-paradise-i236206684-s362383426.html
  11. My 12 year old Vigo tax is 1050 each year since new and hasn't changed. I wonder why yours is so much more. Mine is a 2 door extended cab is yours a 4 door by chance?
  12. But you have no guarantee that your ThinkPad will be quickly repaired and fully functional the next business day. Having a second laptop or PC is a more reliable option since you depend on your laptop for work. I have two laptops one being an older ThinkPad that has been very reliable and has the same programs as my newer laptop. I keep all documents, email archives, pictures etc in one parent folder C:\Files. I then use good old SyncToy (still works on Win10) to sync the files over the network at least once daily. I also sync my browser profile and any other important %appdata% files. This makes it convenient for travel too knowing that if a laptop goes missing I have a solid backup in place. I'm guessing you have some kind of redundancy too including using the cloud?
  13. Not my first extension but first using money in the bank method. Previously I needed to request a 12 month statement from Bangkok Bank in Khon Kaen to show monthly transfers which of course requires up to 7 days to get the statement from Bangkok. Since it was necessary to return to the bank for the statement I would get the letter certifying the account at the same time then off to immigration. I give the local bank 50/50 odds of doing the letter. The bank is 10 minutes from home so not too much time wasted if they won't do the letter. If they do the letter and KK immigration accepts it then that is the simplest path for me. Thanks to ubonjoe for the example letter to show.
  14. Thanks. I'll give it a try. I would like to get it done at the bank in our nearby town the day before so I can avoid downtown Khon Kaen in the morning and just head straight to immigration.
  15. Does the bank letter certifying the account and balance need to be done the same day as the extension application or can it be done in advance? This is for Khon Kaen immigration.
  16. Having the files on the CD converted to an ISO image is an unnecessary step for what you're trying to accomplish. When you get the ISO back from the shop you'll just need to extract the files from the ISO to do the installation. As I mentioned in a previous post all you need to do is have the files copied straight from the CD to a folder on a USB drive connect it to your laptop, move the folder over and run the installation exe file. Maybe you plan to mount the ISO for one of your VMs but that shouldn't be necessary either.

  18. Valid point but personally it's been years since I've used a Thai dictionary one reason is the text in my dictionaries is too small for my aging eyes and looking up words on the Internet is just easier all around and you can get audio too if desired. I think learning to type Thai for better use of online dictionaries is more important than learning the correct order of the characters. Learn both if you have the time and desire. Speaking of dictionaries my current go to favorite is: https://www.thai2english.com/ I've recently started to use https://thai-notes.com/dictionaries/haas.html which uses the Mary Haas dictionary database for the back end. A forum member created the site and very nicely done.
  19. Good to hear she's attempting to do things correctly in these difficult times. The best way for her to stay safe is to treat everyone like they are currently infected. Can't be much fun coming into constant contact with customers and their money each day.
