I’m having bouts of Anxiety – Need advice .
cdemundo replied to Captain Disorderly's topic in Health and Medicine
I think there are a lot of good suggestions here. IMHO often there is no one "silver bullet" that cures anxiety or compulsive worrying. As others have noted, not all professional interventions involve drug treatments. The "talking therapy" can be helpful in my experience. I attended a seminar on the "Common Cognitive Distortions" for my work and it helped me. With a little reading on the topic I found that there are a small number of these errors in thinking or perception that are generally recognized. "Catastrophic thinking" as another poster has discussed is a very common one, and one that has plagued me all of my life. But awareness can help. Quick search returned some examples: "A List of the Most Common Cognitive Distortions All-or-Nothing Thinking / Polarized Thinking. ... Overgeneralization. ... Mental Filter. ... Disqualifying the Positive. ... Jumping to Conclusions – Mind Reading. ... Jumping to Conclusions – Fortune Telling. ... Magnification (Catastrophizing) or Minimization. ... Emotional Reasoning." https://positivepsychology.com/cognitive-distortions/ You might check out some articles on the "Common Cognitive Distortions"; no need to shell our for a seminar unless you think it would help. Best of luck to you. -
"Why are you taking the lead from strapper hangers on the BTS ?" I wear the mask as a courtesy, I am not "taking advice on whether to wear a mask from the majority of people you see about you in Thailand". Neither do I take advice on whether to wear a mask from self-appointed experts who work with "shelf stackers in shops and supermarkets". I prefer to take advice on this topic from medical professionals if you prefer not to that is entirely up to you.

What I have noticed is some people wear masks and some don't. I have noticed that more people wear masks in some places (crowded BTS/MRT). than in others. I try to wear a mask if everyone seems to do so (like on BTS), not bothered if I forget, get no dirty looks. I was living in an AirBNB in a nice high rise apartment in BKK for a month this year. Almost everyone wore a mask in the elevator there and I tried to do so as well. Some people seemed to be paranoid in the elevator, turned their face to the wall right up to their nose touching. I got the impression they thought foreigners (like me) were carrying disease, but don't really know. I guess the elevator is a confined space so that was the thinking. Now I don't think about it much either way until I see a thread like this.

Sorry, can't help myself... "No one ever expects the Spanish Inquisition." "Last time I used a foreigen debit card in Thailand" As has been said Charles Schwab reimburses all fees charged when using their debit card. Total charges are added up and reimbursed once a month.

Getting a teenager to learn English in Korat
cdemundo replied to surreybloke's topic in Language School Courses
The quality of any type of provider will vary, some schools/tutors are good, some... not so good. Tutors are more likely to play it by ear as far as a systematic study of English, schools usually use course books that implement a plan. In my opinion, avoid a teacher/school that concentrates on memorizing grammar terminology and technical aspects of grammar. You are a proficient English speaker, do you apply your knowledge of grammar, or your knowledge of the language without thinking about grammar? But people learn languages if motivated, and any help with her studies will advance her level of English. Best of luck to her. -
Getting a teenager to learn English in Korat

IMHO...Try to find a native English speaker (NES). She will model her pronunciation on her teacher's pronunciation. Also, if she can understand one NES teacher that is one variation of English accent she will be able to understand without difficulty. -

Why do people on here call Thailand the land of smiles?
cdemundo replied to bignok's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
I don't know ... But I wonder how Thai expats got the reputation of being bitter, nasty old men. On this forum they are always so cheery and pleasant. -

Taxi driver: “300 hundred baht, OK?”Rupp: “Meter?”Taxi driver: “No, no meter.” So he got in the taxi which implies he agreed to the conditions. Against the law?, then he aided and abetted a crime. -
Stick Your Mister Where The Sun Don't Shine
cdemundo replied to Neeranam's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
Boss has become the go to form of address for strangers and casual contacts (in 7-11 it is mandatory) in the Los Angeles area where i lived. Seems like it has crossed the Pacific, I get "boss" from taxi drivers here sometimes. I use it automatically myself. Is it equivalent to "mate" in the countries that use "mate" in a similar way? I find the tailors a bit annoying but never noticed they say "boss". Let me think, there's gotta be something people say that bugs me. -

Purest of foolishness. What do people who meet you casually in your home country say to you? Something of the deepest significance? Something showing deep understanding of human feelings? Or just some throw away small talk? As in the classic SNL skit, it's possible that you have a large arthropod lodged in your posterior. -

Weighing passengers to become standard for Bangkok Airways

You point is well taken, but.. How much muscle weighs more than fat? Which weighs more, a pound of lead or a pound of feathers? You are groping for the concept of density. Middle school general science. -

I'm a fat guy and I don't mind this. I probably weigh twice as much as the average Thai adult. Fuel costs are high, seems fair. -

I was told when I got the Elder card I would be getting 50% discount. But I don't have a non-elder card to compare with. -

"Here's one for you, make owning a firearm outrageously expensive." I think requiring liability insurance for guns like is done for cars would help. responsible gun owners should have no problem with it. Let insurance companies create rates reflecting their risk for insuring a 22 pistol vs an assault rifle. Can't think of any argument against this. Check that, Can't think of any reasonable argument against this.

I would say that almost all people are against a totalitarian government. That being said... Is your gun a magic talisman that prevents a totalitarian government? Or do you imagine yourself in a firefight with FBI agents, ATF agents, Seal Team Six, helicopter gunships? I have never heard an explanation for how individuals owning weapons of war prevents a totalitarian government. I think it is because there isn't one.
