What's the best mobile data package for emergency use (pre-pay for the year)?

3BB is pretty reliable, but sometimes has its moments. Usually I jump a tethered connection on my iPhone but I find it overheats after 30 minutes or so and I start getting connection issues, this is always enough time to run and get my wife's one plus, which provides a really stable connection.

It always happens when i'm working, so I think I will buy the router that I suggested above but what's the best sim for occasional emergency use and where to buy it? Any provider has a good service, but we use AIS out here without any issues.

If you are happy with AIS; then their 100 GB per month capped at 10 Mbps Marathon pack for 1500 baht might suit you.

Alternatively if you have NT Wireless(TOT) coverage at your place(no high rises usually); https://totwirelessnet.com/Promotion/index

They have an unlimited volume of their Max speed @ 999 baht for the year. Your device will need to be capable of utilising Band 40. The router above is capable; but we don't know if there is coverage in your area.

Many thanks for your post, I am looking for internet for my Son's apartment as they will not allow fibre cable installation. I think this is the way forward. I am guessing you use a sim card with it.

Concentrate on the SIM first; the router afterwards.

Currently all networks offer unlimited up to 20 Mbps packs. But first you need to check who can actually supply those speeds at your particular location.

Secondly, networks utilise Carrier Aggregation to boost the speeds available. Some devices don't use it, so will never be able to achieve those speeds.

Buying a device capable of CA will increase your chances of higher speeds. But the device has to be capable of using the bands that the network utilises. Hence deciding on the SIM first and then buying a SIM router to suit.

For example; AIS utilises Carrier Aggregation on Bands 1 & 3, also on Bands 1, 3 & 8. So if your device is capable of 3CA or 2CA on those particular bands, you have the possibility for higher speeds.

DTAC also utilises Band 1 & 3. Though they also have a few chunks of Band 40 and use that on 2CA and 3CA.

    Truemove-H on B1+3, B1+B8 and B1+B3+B8. Again 2CA or 3CA available.

How do you know if a device supports it? It will state either 4G+ or 2CA/3CA.

The least expensive SIM router that I've found with at least 2CA ability is https://www.tendacn.com/product/4g09.html

    4G FDD LTE:B1/B2/B3/B4/B5/B7/B8/B20/B28AB;

    4G TDD-LTE:Band38/Band40;

    3G WCDMA:B1/B2/B5/B8

  4. Hmmmm...not really as simplistic as suggested. First thing that you need to do it to test a normal SIM at the location; perhaps using a Smartphone.

No good buying a SIM with a 10 Mbps package, only to discover that only 2 Mbps is available with that network at that particular location.

If you want to go with DTAC, then first buy a normal DTAC SIM without any packages and run a speed test at the apartment.

If speeds are 10 Mbps or more, then you can go with a 10 Mbps or 20 Mbps pack. If not, you can consider testing another network's SIM.

The router is another question entirely.

    I paid 1,500bht on Lazada for AIS 1 year 10Mbps (100Gb) + free AIS calls + 60 minutes other network calls/month.

Not quite the same as unlimited 10 Mbps and unlimited any network calls; though it's like adequate for light users.

A single Full HD movie per day can use up the whole allowance; 100GB really only for relatively light users these days.

Yes they are detachable but we didn't need any range extension over a 800 sq m site. We were about 5 km from the nearest cell tower with thick forest and no line of sight in between so quite surprised with the results and the Chinese client was pleased. We did spend about half-a-day finding the optimum location within the camp and some users had drop outs but we weren't sure if it was cell network related or just too many users on WeChat!

Since it's a consumer unit and not commercial-grade, probably the best one could do is add something like this?

I hope you are joking with your antenna suggestion. Those are WiFi antenna.

Next time; try remove the tracking from the actual link, as opposed to just the descriptor. ???? You presented the link as if the tracking info was not still attached.

@Bruno123how does one get the SIM with 20 Mbps and unlimited free any network calls please?

Details are posted on a recent thread. Only available in 15 provinces. 300 baht per month. 59 baht per month extra if you want unlimited any network calls.

10 Mbps 200 baht with anytime calls is no longer available. It 200 baht for data and another 59 baht for the calls.

Too busy to find a link to the thread. But it's recent enough, so you should find it.

  8. I would suggest to be a bit more discerning with your choice of LTE antenna; since you want to begin with the best possible signal in the first instance.

Feeding that into a 4G router that provides WiFi to all of your devices is one option.

Even if you use a signal booster to improve reception for your phone indoors; you still need the best antenna your budget allows; in order to obtain the best signal to feed into the other equipment.

If you amplify the sound from a cassette tape you will hear all of the hiss and other defects in the sound. Not so easy to fault the sound of CD audio.

So as strong and clean a signal as possible from the aerial is needed. -92 dBm still isn't great. -80 dBm and lower is better.

Hmm. @Bruno123 ragged on me for not doing tests.

I provide extensive test results and he doesn't comment?

    Huh? What? Whom? Me? ????

Erm...as I suspected; AIS has the better signal in your case and I still await the Combined speed test result via https://testmy.net

    ????

You can run test at the point where you found the strongest signal outside. That will give you an idea of the potential speeds inside once you have rigged up an aerial etc Hopefully with the right equipment, you can improve on those figures and direct the stronger signal into the house.

    Just finished testing dtac SIM

    Outside:

Best direction also toward larger town but not in exact same direction as TRUE and AIS.

    LTE B1 2100mhz @ -112dBm

    Inside:

    No signal

NOTE: Intermittently signal would display as B40??  What is this 5G?? or just error due to weak signal?

B40: DTAC has three 20MHz blocks on that Band in use for LTE(4G)

Usually if you call AIS they will offer you 150 baht a month unlimited data 10mbps, say you're thinking of switching to another company, sometimes it helps, sometimes not necessary.

In the unlikely event of that failing, ask AIS for the code so you can port your number to another company, that usually triggers a call offering you a deal

Whom do you know who was offered such a deal? If such a deal exists, then why did you not apply? 25 baht per month more for Unlimited data not attractive to you?

  11. Test the speeds OUTSIDE the property. Perhaps start with four tests; N, E, S & W. Turning the phone off and on again at each point , but before each test. That way forcing it to find the cell each time.

Do that with EACH SIM and log the results. This should indicate the kind of speeds you will be getting INSIDE the property with a repeater.

If the speeds outside the property are poor, then you'll need a decent aerial. Hopefully, after the tests, you'll have a better idea of where it should be positioned.

Don't just start buying stuff without doing the footwork beforehand. Test!

  12. Going to do this once more.

The repeater that you have chosen does mention in the small print that it supports Band 3 LTE(DCS).

Have you checked on the frequency bands utilised in your particular area?

My 4G router connects to Band 1, whilst my phone connects to Band 3. They are next to each other. But Band 3 has a stronger signal.

So the first thing for you to find out is which band gives the strongest signal(regardless of network) and in which direction.

Then you need a good aerial to lock on to that signal and deliver it to your home.

So run those speed tests on all SIM and report back. Then we can check out the specific bands utilised and get the correct equipment; as opposed to playing guessing games or trying to build the whole thing around a Truemove H SIM.

I don't understand this comment.  4G LTE is covered by 2100mhz is it not?  Did you mean 5G?

The repeater doesn't support LTE. Forget about a repeater.

Tired of repeating the same things. Test the SIM and forget about your crazy idea. I've shown you what you need if anything.

A directional antenna or dish would be better ( better gain/focus = longer distance) but would require more experimentation to point at the correct cell tower.

In the write for one it says make sure you have at least 2 bars signal in the area you install the device otherwise "this product can't help you  it needs a good outdoor signal to improve your indoor signal"

I think he is misunderstanding the utility of the product. It is to boost the signal indoors; rather than improving the speeds available to the modem. In other words, if there is no mobile signal indoors so you need to go outside to make a call; a repeater may allow you to use the phone indoors.

He needs an aerial/amplifier that feeds a good signal to a router/modem; such as https://www.tendacn.com/product/4g09.html

That, together with an LTE antenna kit.

We are still waiting on the other speed tests....

@Bruno123 I read with interest (your post?) regarding the varying specs of AIS v True v DTAC data sims.  In the wake that post I purchased a DTAC 4mbps SIM 1 month validity on Shopee because you identified it as perhaps the best choice.  It is far slower in my location here than TRUE H.  And I have already tried AIS and it runs at about the same speed and consistency as TRUE.  I have used unlimited TRUE SIMS back to back for about 4 years now and they are not perfect but in a decent reception area good enough for what I need.  Problem is I recently bought a little house in a fishing village.  And so I am now going to try and improve my phone service with a signal repeater.  Heaven knows perhaps it will also help the SMS not arriving problem I have now been dealing with for 2 months.

I will buy a 1800mhz model because as I understand it that is for 4G and I can see on my phone that the True data sim is running on 4G.

I get a weather proof omni directional aerial and put it up above my roof on a piece 2 inch pvc pipe.  I will then run it inside and place the indoor aerial next to my computer.

Haven't been able to find any local sellers of these repeaters on Shopee or Lazada so looks like I will have to wait a couple of weeks for it to arrive from China anyway.

I am reasonably sure that I did not suggest you buy a DTAC SIM with a capped speed package for speed testing purpose. ????

    AFAIK Truemove H's 4G/LTE Bands are on bands: 1, 3, 8, 41.

    B1 (2100 MHz)

    B3 (1800 MHz)

    B8 (900 MHz)

    B41 (2500 MHz)

    Your phone can see 4G bands: 1, 3, 5, 8, 38, 40, 41

BUT, your phone does not allow carrier aggregation: https://c.realme.com/in/post-details/1251472971109761024

Let's see the results of the AIS speed test and the DTAC SIM whilst we are at it. But add a full speed pack to the DTAC SIM before beginning the test. *104*851*9# will add a 100 MB volume of full speed data at the cost of 10 baht, for you to utilise for the speed test.

This is where it's useful to have friends. So they can bring their mobile phones that allow Carrier Aggregation over for network testing.

Just tested my True 10mbps Sim on testmy.net.

    Down: 3.1mbps

    Up: 93kbps

Pitiful upload. Let's see AIS. Doubt it will be as bad on the upload.

You can buy a 100 MB in volume package for testing purpose for 10 baht by tapping in*777*70# and then the dial key whilst the AIS SIM is in use. Then use Test My again.
