Does any of this thread still apply?

I'm looking for unlimited internet for my phone, including the ability to tether to a laptop. I'm somewhat less concerned about price than I am about function. Talk time and SMS are not important.

I'll be reentering Thailand this week for the first time in two years after having lived there 10 years+ pre-covid.

My stay this time will be for several months. I'll be entering as a tourist but will attempt to get a non-o as before.

What are my options? Thanks for any advice. I feel like a newbie after all this time away.

Which is best depends on who offers the best speed at your choice of location.

At the moment, all offer Unlimited 20 Mbps month to month deals for 300 baht per month(dependent on whether you have the reception and available bandwidth at your accommodation) or unlimited 10 Mbps annual deals. One payment for the whole year; DTAC being the cheapest at 1390 baht.

Usual method is to buy a SIM you think might be good; then to run a speed test at your chosen accomodation.

If 20+ Mbps is available than subscribe to a 20 Mbps package. If only 10, then subscribe to a 10 Mbps package or try another network's SIM.

I should add that it's actually TOT's SIM is the cheapest annually. Unlimited 'Max speed" data for a year @ 999 baht

You'll need to have capability for B40 LTE-TDD band and obviously reception at your accommodation.

I'd like to take this time to ensure that you know that ACER have a reasonable fixed fee for service for out of warranty devices. 400 baht + VAT is what I used to pay. Of course if you need/needed parts, you could get them yourself and they will fit them for you.

You have an ACER Service Centre in Khon Kaen here

Though I don't think they will be able to put your laptop together for that price.

Don't focus on the RAM since it is easily upgradeable. Cost of RAM(from 650 for 4 GB and from 1300 for 8 GB) plus 428 baht. That will get you 8GB  or 12GB in total, respectively. Since ACER will do the work, it shouldn't affect the device warranty.

So concern yourself with the fixed specification that cannot be changed.

Yes; upgradeable, though not always easy access. You have easy access now to the current one; though not so easy to put it all back together. ????

It's hard for me to get excited by the laptop about which you enquire. CPU is already two generations behind and everything else about the device is either old and outdated or just poor spec.

    Older CPU

    Narrow viewing angle screen

    VGA quality webcam

    2 Cell battery

    Old Bluetooth version

The first thing of note is that the screen will be considerably smaller than to what you are used. 15.6" down to 14"

Second is that the old laptop could have done with a cheap SSD; which would have improved the performance considerably. A bit too late for that now ????

I have multiple laptops mostly Acer 17 inch, some of them bought used. Depending on your age and travel habits you might consider Acer Swift 3 14 inch weight only 2.6 pounds but cost 700$. There are no more cheep laptops but basic laptop you can find for 300$. I use laptop to watch movies and travel with 4K benq projector so you can use 14 inch laptop with HDMI.

But with limited budget I recommend Acer 17 inch.

This is Thailand; they use Baht.

You post is confusing and contradictory.

I have only had to deal with the niece's 6 year-old Acer once and I can see why the wall-option was taken by the OP. However, if he wants more-of-the-same performance-wise (before the wall intervened, maybe tell us the dead one's model number so we have a starting point.

The OP hasn't mentioned a budget or what screen size he is used to. Both of these would make suggestions easier.

FWIW the online offerings of ASUS laptops from Invadeit shows most are out of stock.

Acer Thailand's online resource seems much better so the OP can browse the following and get back with questions.

    https://acerthailand.com/all-model/#filter=.g-notebook.g-aspire

There are bargains to be had on lazada and although I am also an ASUS aficionado, I did see some refurbished i3 and i5 Fujitsu machines last month. I was eying one up as a backup/spare for my 10 year-old ASUS for when it expires.

Seems to be much better...but isn't. Try clicking on any of the NEW ones. Even the older ones just link to Advice & Banana and may be out of stock anyway.

So new ones not available and old ones out of stock.

  9. If you use it exclusively indoors, then screen brightness might not be an issue. Using it in a bright rooms and outdoors may call for a brighter screen.

Just an example of how your usage should drive for what you are looking.

Don't buy a laptop that doesn't have a Solid State Drive within, unless you know how to fit one yourself.

Since you mentioned i3; then we'll use that as a price point.

Ryzen 3 5300U/5400U is a good place to start looking.

    Thanks

in my opinion decent cost at least 4 digit USD amounts. But those are "real" speakers, not just for the PC.

I had something in the range 2000 - 5000 THB in my mind. But I still didn't make up my mind. It would obviously be good to hear them somewhere and not just read/watch some so called reviews from want to be specialist.

As a musician; one will have some idea how things should sound.

The USB speakers will be a disappointment. Better than nothing, but a huge compromise.

The Nano BT 1090 system should be your minimum. You can hear them at any PowerBuy or similar and then compare them to the others in your price range.

I have some Tiger speakers with deeper bass and crisper highs, but don't see those for sale anymore. The 5.25" speakers in the subwoofer really make a difference. Anything less will struggle.

The Nano have 4". They are just okay; but better than USB speakers.

I suggest you take a USB stick with some high quality MP3 tunes in to PowerBuy or even one of the supermarkets such as Tesco/Big C. Most 2.1 systems will have a USB input.

There you will be able to determine how low they go, as the large space should allow for reproduction of the full wave and the clarity of the mids and highs. Doesn't need to be audiophile; but if they cannot produce satisfying lows and crisp highs; you are wasting your money.

Without the ability to produce those lower frequencies; nothing will have much depth.

Take something like John Pattitucci's Heart Of The Bass with you on 320 kbps MP3

You don't want overblown and artificial bass. It should be light and airy but deep. You'll know what's right once you start listening. The guys are cool with you plugging in your USB sticks to have a listen and will gladly help you.

When you say ‘half decent’... how ‘half decent do you want ???

Harmon Kardon make the best sounding small speaker set up around...

Aura Studio 3 are awesome sounding speakers..  3D sound tech - cost about 10,000 baht....  I doubt better can be found at that price.

But, if you just want something to play sound that sounds ok (half decent?) then there are probably many more much cheaper options - IMO its the same as headphones, you get what you pay for in this segment.

Years ago, my local Supercheap had these at a ridiculous price of 390 baht:

I tried them on my PC, liked them and went back and bought more sets. They are now on my laptop, 2 PCs and the TV in the bedroom. The picture above is of my spare set. I occasionally check, but I haven't seen them in my local Supercheap for a long time.

Lazada now has them for 890 baht (about 20 quid): https://www.lazada.co.th/products/saag-multimedia-speaker-micro-21-800w-blacksilver-i8011689.html

    (Oops - out of stock)

For 390 they are ok; for 890 they are a joke.

Any speaker system selling itself a 800 watts output is just trying to have one over on you.

Bass? Small driver in the subwoofer with an alleged frequency response 80 Hz to 250 Hz. You'll just have to imagine the E string on a bass. Low B, forget it.

He should get the Nano suggested at a minimum.

USB speakers; also tinny nonsense. Fine for portability; such as using with a laptop; but severely lacking.

I guess the OP chooses to be selective with his thanks; dependent on his mood.

Thanks for your reply Bruno, and the SE 2016 model was priced at 2400 baht, which I don't mind spending at all, and if it proves to be a fizzer (or I do in using it) then it's not a great loss.

Thank you for the comparison and the newer SE seems to be almost an inch bigger, and for me the smaller one would be fine.

Good to know about the 16 GB capacity, however I do believe the phone I saw was the Thai version, so I suppose one can change the Thai language to English on the phone itself?

Yes; you can request that the vendor do so before sending it out.

Great is all respects but battery - sucks from reports I have read and old phone is likely to have even more issues with battery not being in that good a condition - but if you can live with that it sounds like a good choice.

In addition, shops aren't good at replacing batteries. Quite likely to ruin the Touch ID function when they do so.

You are a great help Bruno, so I thought I'd ask you one last question (I hope).......in searching for the iPhone 5s I also came across the iPhone SE, which appears to have been launched later, and looks to be about the same size, which is great for me.

The one I was looking at only has the 16 GB model, so I was wondering if that would be enough for the Thai app (Mor Chan?) and my normal telephone calls and SMS messages??

16GB more than enough. The only things that will fill it are pictures and videos.

Depends on how much you are willing to pay: https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=5685&idPhone2=7969&idPhone3=10170

How much is the SE? 2016?

Have been prompted to update this thread to say - to all those who have so kindly offered such great advice - that I decided to get myself a Samsung qled Q70A tv, from Homepro. 26 smackers! So far, so good. ????????????????????

(To anyone interested......didn't exactly start well! Delivery people came, set it up in a hurry....guy attaching the stand somehow stripped a thread and meant that tv ended up kind of wonky. Not level. I noticed it but let it go (not knowing about the stripped thread). Didn't sleep well on it though and checked it myself the following morning. Not good. Mad as hell. But.....went to homepro with bits, they understood & didn't hesitate to change whole TV for another one the same day, so pleased at that! The guy had used a drill screwdriver. Mistake. )

I can see old habits die hard ???? Regardless of all the gentle prompting of vinny41 and others, you couldn't resist the salesman in-store ????

How else to explain why you ignored all the advice given here to pay 4,000 baht more than was necessary?

    https://www.lcdtvthailandshop.com/55q70a.html

What pushed you towards the Samsung?

I don't really get it, but I don't have to understand everything ????

Watch whatever you enjoy. No judgement.
