Thank goodness, that wasn't too hard..

?? Remember that newer laptops have the battery INSIDE the laptop. How will the OP purchase a second hand laptop and have it sent to the recipient? What about a warranty if something goes wrong?

Second hand is not a good suggestion in this case.

Now price 199 Bt. for shellfish, meat and smaller crustaceans. 399 Bt. for larger crustaceans.

Have a lot seafood: shrimp (alive too), crab, squid, mussels and etc.

Very good service and friendly staff.

Also in this price now include 2 options for cooking: standard hotpot and grill.

Big space and a lot of tables.

Visited there once....prefer Ninja on 3rd road. Especially since they scrapped the 400 baht option.

I also have both HotPot and grill at Ninja. Of course another cynical poster might think he knows better.....

It's a great experience. Happy that the food snobs stay away. They prefer not to get involved with their food preparation.

Just drove past there a few minutes ago. Half the spots they'd dug and covered are blocked by traffic cones now and you can see they all had collapsed, some worse that others. The other spots are still being worked on.

All they need to do now is slap some of those thick steel sheets on top of the collapsed sections, turning the holes into moguls (that would be better served on a ski hill) and will be sure to nail more than a few unsuspecting motorcycles, especially at night.

Then they will eventually (within 2-3 years hopefully) refill the holes and slap an extra thick layer of asphalt on top, making those moguls a permanent feature. Just like they seem to do everywhere else.

Stop it! This is a world class resort I'll have you know!

No it's meant to drive any tourists towards Central Group's products. They have other offers, such as all accommodation price value back as hotel credit for spending on extras.

Of course they want to keep most of your spending within their group; hence discount coupons on top of the hotel offers.

It's not just about the discount coupons. Though not clear if they apply the discount at point of sale. No one wants a coupon that they have to use after spending.

I would defo buy new locally. I went to Central westgate and got mine - there was a big range to choose from the many IT stores there and prices starting from as little as 10k from memory. They also brought me to a shop that loaded all the apps on that I needed for my work and when I had a problem (virus) they sorted it for me. Also came with a one year guarantee. Not sure why you would even consider a second hand to be honest.

How is any of this useful when the OP is in the USA and where did you read that they were considering buying second hand?

Give the student your 3 year old one and then get yourself something new...That way you know what you are giving the student works fine and you get something new.  I have a 9 year old Sony Vaio that works a charm. Replaced hard drive for 1500 baht, new screen case 4,000 baht, nothing else done in 9 years.  I recently bought a MacBook Air...also nice and faster, but I'll also use the Sony as backup and for MS Word applications...

and how do you propose that he gives the student the old laptop? Send from the USA? What if it stops working after a few months? No warranty and the girl has to pay to fix it out of her own pocket and likely lose the use of it at a critical time. That's why an on-site warranty is best.

Why would a laptop purchased in Thailand not "work fine"?

What does you buying a MacBook Air have to do with this thread?

We call them Best Buys and Walmarts and Office Depots.  Used to be Fry's and Circuit City's, too.  But they went the way of the dodo.

I meant the OP is in the USA and the recipient is in Thailand...he will not be buying anything in the USA..... and he won't be browsing IT Malls in Thailand for second hand items....sigh. Seems no one really follows the thread.

Actually windows 10 is not the bogey man it once was. It does take a bit of getting used too but since the (many) updates have been released the operating system has become stable and secure.

A wise man once told me never get the latest release of windows. Always wait until at least two service packs have been released for it. Then jump on board.

It is clear that you misunderstood what I wrote. I mean the OP should install Windows 10 themselves; as opposed to letting someone in a shop do it for him.

But of course, he will still need to install a clean Windows which means either connecting to the internet or using his 'old' DVD or whatever.

Yes. They still have Internet cafes or he can take his chances with letting a shop install Windows 10(I wouldn't).

Thanks all, at the point where it will go to a tech, any recommendations for Chiang Mai?

    Thanks

I recommend that you buy an SSD and either fit it yourself, which is very easy, or take that to the shop and let them fit it.

If you don't, they will almost certainly fit the cheapest branded SSD to your device.

Likely a Kingston A400 or Western Digital Green.

Beeter to order something like a Samsung Evo 870 for yourself: https://shopee.co.th/SAMSUNG-SSD-870-EVO-SATA-250GB-500GB-i.27761913.4579779664

or at the very least, a Western Digital Blue: https://shopee.co.th/WD-BLUE-500GB-SATA3-SSD-2.5-3DNAND-(MS6-43)-Internal-Solid-State-Drive-i.25344508.4921942656

You don't need to buy via Shopee; just listed to show examples.

Your PC will be much faster than before once you fit a good quality SSD.

Two year on-site warranty. Wide View screen as opposed to a narrow view TN type, Ryzen CPU as opposed to Athlon/Celeron/Pentium. 8GB of RAM as opposed to 4GB, NVMe SSD as opposed to HDD, 720p webcam as opposed to VGA, 3 cell battery as opposed to 2 cell...

You would have made a horrible blunder in buying that ACER. Thank goodness it was not in stock.

I actually think the spec might be wrong; but you could hardly complain if they sent her a model with a TN screen. The other thing is...where is the operating system? ????

It is tragic, obviously, but he should not be here/ let the NHS look after him with his family. IMHO unless you have 40,000 a month, 800k for your visa, health insurance and bought a home here you should not be here.

I think you just got carried away. Really just stuff you made up off the top of your head in order to say something. But it's just wrong...all of it.

It's estimated around 80% of commercial properties are vacant across the city now.

Some Thai landlords may only have one or two properties in their portfolio vacant, others may have more, and some may have all their properties vacant.

Some Thai landlords may have bought in with finance, so the banks will be stepping in if they can't service their debts by other means.

Interesting times ahead here for commercial property sales and rents.

I guess your one of those cheap charlies that frequents that shop often as you know it so well. That's OK don't be embarrassed giving a 50 bht tip as theres something for everyone budget in Pattaya.

You guessed wrong; I don't like that kind of place and massage at all. I only went to accompanying someone who would go there for a foot massage. I find it an unpleasant experience.

When I did go for a massage, I would visit Benjamard on Soi Bua Khao. They would serve yoghurt and orange juice, private massage rooms with appropriate music, rather than the girls just babbling with each other or looking at their phones. Just a much nicer and more relaxing atmosphere. There prices were higher than the Bua Khao standard, but then so was the service quality.

    So nice try, Cheap Charlie.

I honestly can't think of anything worse to eat in Thailand, than Moo Grataa.

Add in that you stink for the remainder of the evening from the cooking at the table, and its big no thanks here.

Quite different for me, if you can find a good one. Almost like camping, but more convenient. Can really be quite cosy.

Ninja is closed due to covid...

It hasn't been open since lockdown 2.0

When it was open the price was 199 (no seafood) 400 (seafood)

Not correct. The 400 baht price was eliminated and it was just 199 baht for everything.  Great value and I hope to support them when they are open again. I eat generously and tip generously.
