I've only had one implant so far. Had it done at Bangkok Hospital Pattaya. I chose a South Korean device that was not the cheapest but closer to the bottom than the top of the price range. The package price was 57,000 baht. That included the implant and the ceramic-covered gold tooth. The 3D scan was charged separately but everything else was included. Everything.

This was in a full-service hospital. One specialist does the drilling, insertion, and care. Another does the crown. Every dental specialist is nearby and available for consultation if things get tricky.

If I go to some shophouse I might save 10,000 baht, but only if there are no surprise charges added.

My implant took place over 5 or 6 months, partly due to my age but for anyone going slowly is the only way to assure a successful implant. Don't let yourself be persuaded otherwise. Remember: whoever you choose is going to be drilling a hole in your head.

You don't/didn't need to go to a shophouse to save 10,000 baht. You just needed to travel a bit further to Sri Racha. The ceramic/porcelain bonded crown is actually the cheap option and more prone to damage. Better to have a solid one piece crown.

You don't always get the best quality by paying more. Sometimes you are paying for the location and prestige of going to the most expensive place. It doesn't mean that you are getting better treatment.

The hospitals are in the same group.

Well, there are probably as many recommendations as there are dentists in the city. It seems pretty much everyone has been to a different place and recommends it to everyone else.

I would suggest finding a spot that isn't on a main road in a "touristy" area. For example, I'd avoid the slew of dentists along South Pattaya Road around the TukCom area. I went to one there once on the recommendation of my Thai friends many years ago.
Great job. Had a root canal and a filling done for about 2,500 baht.
Went back a few months later to see about doing some implants and the place was under new ownership and the prices had jumped to "Farang" prices (i.e. about 10 times what they had been).

I went to a place on Soi Khao Noi instead. Bigger place but not as busy and the prices were the same for Thais and foreigners. I go back there now because the service is good and it's much closer to home (which is a plus when you get out of the chair with half your face numb and drool dribbling down your chin).

There are probably a number of places close to wherever you are. Doesn't hurt to pop in and just ask what they charge for implants. Would give you an idea as to the cost and an impression of the place (how busy it is, how clean it is, etc).

He already has the top recommendation. The best dentist/oral surgeons around here know each other. Plus of course they have all of the needed facilities at the hospital.

I want to replace my Asus VIvoBook S510 as it is a few years old. It has an i7 processor and 16GB RAM, a small SSD and a larger HD.

I want something similar, although I would rather go with a single 1TB SSD.

Would also like a US English lighted keyboard and windows pro.

Any brand/model recommendations and or particular shops in Bangkok would be appreciated. I normally buy while in the US but I might not make it back this year and  the hinge on the Asus is getting a little sketchy.

It takes minutes to upgrade from Home to Pro and costs a few hundred baht. You don't even need to install anything. You enter the Pro generic key to move from Home to Pro and then you enter a purchased Pro key in order to activate it. It's that easy.

The shops must love you. These are seriously minor issues.

The hinge has been an ongoing issue that I do not think will go away.

Why do you think so? A hinge is a hinge. Maybe a bolt needs loosening or you can simply have it replaced.

People tend to leave the issue until the surrounding plastic gets damaged. Get it sorted sooner. It doesn't sound like a major issue.

    https://www.asus.com/support/service-center/thailand

Laptop is way too new to scrap. If you don't want it, give it to me. I have a friend crying out for a new laptop. I would happily pay to get the hinge sorted and pass it on. Though seriously, it 's a small issue, as is fitting two large capacity SSDs.

Hi sorry I know its an old thread. Is this doctor still there do you know. I had an crown bridge snap 4 weeks ago and had to have the tooth extracted as there was nothing to re attach the crown too. Now waiting for it to heal, I have a 2 tooth gap. Ocean dental said it would cost between 36 and 56 k for a bridge. I would prefer one implant and a retainer. How does the cost compare? How much were your implants? Thanks

Yes she is still there. Implant and crown costs 45k baht. If you want a ceramic crown(recommended) it costs a bit more.

Fix the hinge and fit a couple of larger SSD(2 x 512GB?) 3000 baht?

I eat at Cheap Charlies on a semi regular basis, for that breakfast. It is OK for me, have a small appetite and that fills me OK.

Yesterday evening went to Chill Inn soi bukhao after having not been there for a while.

I had the chicken shnitzel  with fries. Everyday special at 89 baht, Good enough for me.

    Glass of wine 120bt, water 30 bt ( I think )

    Food consistent there.

Other times I will spend a fair bit more, usually if I want Italian or French food, which are my favourites.

Real fries or frozen? One of my favourite places in Bangkok, just off the Khaosan road, is the best for that kind of thing. I would be happy if I could get something resembling their offer.

I love the woman who runs it. Working hard all day. She deserves her success.

I imagine that the places in Pattaya take shortcuts. Frozen chips not anywhere close to freshly cut potatoes.

    Oh no!

    Another Sichuan restaurant.

    <deleted> man lou

What was deleted rhymes with Foo but uses a U

    2nd road

    North Pattaya

    Now on Hungry Now delivery

Long ago I posted about this restaurant in house and concluded that they have some good food but complained about their high prices. Yes my feeling was that its overpriced for what you get.

For examples kung pao chicken and mapo tofu both at 260.

Hungry Now used to feature the decent and well priced Chengdu Sichuan restaurant but that's apparently been long closed.

So <deleted> Man Lou is their new option in that space.

I sampled their menu on some orders and overall thought that their food was mostly  pretty good. Better for my taste than the previously mentioned Tai Chin which I have been ordering via Lineman.

As is sadly typical with Pattaya Sichuan restaurants their Sichuan peppercorns are weak and not fresh enough.

They do have some dishes you don't often see such as so called Chinese pork hamburgers in house made pastry. 80. A good variety of noodles with sauces which are priced OK. 100 to 150.

I did try their fish filet slices in chili oil mini hot pot for 480. Thats a market price for that dish here but I was disappointed both on flavor and portion.

Hungry Now has free delivery so that compares well to Lineman that has high by distance delivery fees.

I know you're all waiting with baited breath but Lineman has another Sichuan restaurant on Pattaya Tai that I never heard of that I hope to give a try. It should be noted that sometimes Lineman has listings for restaurants that are long closed.

Many of the apps have menus only in Thai or Chinese. I've avoided those but finally started looking at a system of doing screenshots and then Google translation for restaurants that I'm motivated enough. For example Shanghai on 3rd road on Lineman.  Does anyone know if its still open?

Shanghai looked very closed to me. A shame, as it was on my list of eateries.

  9. An alternative would be to purchase Microsoft Office 2016, as it is supported until October 2025. Around 1250 baht.

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Microsoft-Office-2016-Home-and-Business-E-S-D-Word-Excel-Outlook-PowerPoint-OneN/333896759668

Also 2013: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Microsoft-Office-2013-Home-and-Business-E-S-D-Word-Excel-Outlook-PowerPoint-OneN/333874044189 Supported until April 2023 Around 1100 baht. 2016 better value.

Forget about the subscription model; it's likely not for you. You'll be paying for things that you do not use.

Home & Business does not contain Publisher and Access, only:

    Microsoft Word
    Microsoft Excel
    Microsoft PowerPoint
    Microsoft OneNote
    Microsoft Outlook

Hi all. Some help please. First up, I'm not all that IT savvy. Ok, I've been using outlook 07 for email for many years. Outlook 07 is no longer supported. I need to purchase a new "program", I think. I've had a look at 365 & outlook 19 but not being all that knowledgeable with this stuff, I'm really not sure where to go. I'm currently using a "borrowed" outlook 16 but it needs to be  registered & I don't have the appropriate code.

Beside email I also use word a fair bit. Hope this makes some sense.

Any advice, info will be most appreciated. Cheers.

I'm not sure I understand your question. On Sunday the buffet was served in the Edge restaurant, and was quite extensive. Today, the buffet was served in the Horizon restaurant, but while still good, was less extensive.

I don't doubt I would enjoy both the view and the 89 baht breakfast at Cheap Charlie's. The only thing I enjoy more than a cheap breakfast is a free breakfast, or better perhaps a free breakfast with a a cheap date...

    Nicely done.

Thanks for kind gesture, but im all good thanks, topped up & the validity date is up till the end of the year.

Not a problem. Hopefully you can get them to apply Roaming if you haven't already done so. Then you can just use USSD codes to keep validity going ad infinitum.

My TV system for watching films is: external hard drive > WDTV > Receiver > TV. I do not stream anything directly from the internet. I have no interest in streaming, and I would like to maintain my present setup with the sole exception of the WDTV unit. The main problem is lack of compatibility and particularly that my WDTV will not process PGS subtitles, which have now become essential to my viewing pleasure. Can anyone please suggest a cheap (repeat cheap) replacement with similar functionality, including a remote, and greater compatibility? I will be very grateful.

    WDTV setup.jpg

I don't have much experience with this. I would expect Jai Dee to have a fair bit on 'hands on' experience.

Though what I would suggest is to be careful with your choice of Android box. Some may claim to play 4k, but the result might not be to your liking.

The way I would test a box is to take a USB storage drive with you, replete with the files that you need to play alongside files that you might need to play in the future; namely H.265/HEVC/10-bit.

You can find sample files here: https://jell.yfish.us and here: https://kodi.wiki/view/Samples

So you can really test the media player capabilities if they can set it up against a 4k TV for you.

Alternatively, you may need a specific recommendation from someone who utilising one for playing high quality video.

Your current collection won't be an issue. But going forward you will want an up to date player that has overhead, so that it doesn't produce disappointing results when faced with such media.

I've always had roaming enabled and also planned ahead for the last 6 years, but for some reason this year with thousands or foreigner's being stranded in there home countries & unable to return they will lose there number & there credit if this was there only means of topping up & if DTAC really cared about there customers they would of sorted this out, you've only got to look on the reviews on the play store for the DTAC app & see, not once has DTAC answered to any of the negative reviews.........

Seriously, waaay too much drama. Send me the number via PM and I'll top it up for you. Life is too short for you to stress yourself out over such small things.

Have you been watching a lot of 'The Dog Whisperer' this week?

Think you are giving the dogs too much credit for intelligence and you are talking about well socialized well adjusted dogs.

Often the ones you meet here have been conditioned to be aggressive to people from being kicked or having objects thrown at them out of the blue.

You only expose your own state of mind when you write such things. I did not arrive here yesterday. I've been here on and off since 1992. How about you?

So I know something about the dogs here. In fact on my very first visit in 1992 I tended to a dog with a wound all the way to the bone. Even though I had a nurse(just passing and offered to assist) assist in holding it's head since I knew nothing about the dog it made no attempt to struggle nor bite.

On at least two occasions on different islands, a larger dog tackled another dog that ran at me, before it could even get to me.

The only time I have been bitten, is by puppies biting my ankles. So that is twice in nearly twenty nine years. Just playful.

I have so many amazing stories; but you won't ever experience such things as you have set yourself up to believe whatever you believe.

The same dogs that caress me with their faces, might bark at you if you approached in the middle of the night. So you might think them dangerous. But I know them as a family and see their personalities and their struggles through life. Helping them takes some of the strain away from their lives and allows them to relax and enjoy life a bit more. Like you and me. They aren't that different. They love me much.

Then there are dogs that I don't feed that love me the same. They might not need food but the love the company, the fun...

But again, just because you see it differently doesn't mean that you are wrong. You just see it differently.

Some who is afraid of heights won't appreciate a parachute jump. They would think it dangerous and anyone who wanted to do it crazy. But does it mean that parachute jumping is wrong?

We all have differing perspectives. Problems arise when one person insists that his perspective is the only one that is valid.

If you haven't had the amount of positive experiences that I have had, then it is no surprise that you don't have the same outlook. I won't judge you unfairly for that.

But you generalise somewhat about the dogs. There is always going to be crazy dogs, just like there are crazy people. But we don't talk about putting all humans down unless they have a home.

There must be a better solution than killing our friends.

ive had dogs all my life i have no problems but these are  street vermin Try conquering yiu fear when you have a dozen flea bitten saliva dripping scuffy hounds at you heels  Please come show me ..as for carrying something to protect myself   as a lot of people do....i suppose carry a Budda and ask the lovely animals to let the Farang pass  ..have you visited the streets at night..You Should..

You need to step back a little. We don't all have the same state of mind. Your state of mind has dominion over your responses.

I like to explore. So I will deliberately walk into communities where there are no foreigners to get a feel for life there. The communal dogs can come out in force. So I know something about having many dogs barking and threatening etc

But I don't panic. I show them that I am friend. Alpha always stays back and observes. Perhaps a puppy or younger dog will come closer to investigate. You allow them to do their thing whilst making reassuring noises. Don't try to touch them. Once the Alpha sees that you are no threat he will wonder off and the pack with him. There is often one lone dog that wants to keep up the noise, but the rest just ignore and get on with their lives.

Very rare that an Alpha will attack. They fight each other and are usually sensible enough to know their limitations.

Of course if you are aggressive and panicking, they might coordinate an attack.

You state that you have had dogs all of your life, but you don't seem to understand them. Dogs and humans work together; of that there is no doubt. You just need to know how to behave around them, so that they understand what to do.

Of course there are those who don't have warm human contact. Don't show fear, show compassion. They know.; even if they are afraid. Gain their trust. Life is richer when you don't see life around you as a negative.

I've met some super intelligent dogs in Thailand. They know. One dog at my local market would just come over to nuzzle and rest his head on my leg. I would have to sneak to the market quietly if I was busy and didn't have time to spend with him.

We just see life differently. If you had my experiences you might feel differently. But I won't say that you are wrong because it's genuinely the way that you feel.

I hope that you can have some positive experiences.
