Honestly don’t come here. It’s a socio-political nightmare. Our dysfunction is worse because we have competing factions and ethnicities that all hate eachother. I’d rather have homogenous cultural dysfunction than deal with people who don’t even remotely share my values, temperament, etc. It’s gotten intolerable in the last 5 years. I wouldn’t recommend it. Pretty easy to avoid being a victim: -speak Thai even a little bit -pay agents -don’t drive -ask the price before or use 3rd party apps -walk away and/or don’t raise your voice/make a scene/make them lose face worst thing that’s happened to me is two instances of bill padding which amounted to like 20 extra dollars and being charged an extra 1000 baht for bottle service at a Thai karaokee club. That’s in almost two years of of living there. Nbd

This is a conundrum as old as time. You simply dont rent anywhere where a deposit is required because they won’t give it back and there’s no legal mechanism to force them to if you’re a foreigner.

Nice fantasy, boomer. id like to take a PhD class on Thai psychology, particularly “face,” and crime+punishment. It is honestly fascinating to me and extremely enigmatic how weighty face loss is to them, the insane reaction, and also the very light jail sentences or fines imposed for vicious violence. The lengthy jail sentences deter most people in America from these acts, but in Thailand, I can *sort of* understand how someone would be willing to throw away only a few years of life if it meant absolving a massive degradation to their reputation in a society that prizes it. I’ve read “How Thais Lead,” and “Inside Thai Society,” but it’s only really the window dressing of their psyche. There doesn’t seem to be any kind of true introspective works that are native. if any of you guys do know some good books on the topic I’d like to read

Every time I’ve been called a farang it’s always had a derogatory and demeaning connotation; akin to a dumb animal. At best it’s used barely neutrally “hey look at that farang he must be rich.” It’s pretty unacceptable.

I like how Thailand likes to do anything except acknowledge the reality that the “tourists” who come here are single, western men looking to party and have easy, abundant sex. nobody cares about festivals or whatever other horses**t they trot out. I almost have to wonder if it’s deliberate because no other explanation makes sense
