A new-born baby has been rescued after being found dumped by a heap of garbage in front of a house in Bang Lamung district of Chon Buri Province this morning (Sunday). According to Pattaya police, 54-year-old Surachai was taking his dog for a pre-dawn walk in a housing estate in Na Klua sub-district when he heard the cries of a baby, which he initially thought was a cat. Surachai then asked a neighbour to take a closer look at the heap of garbage and they discovered a baby boy, wrapped in napkins, inside a plastic bag. He said they fetched towels and wrapped the baby in them before alerting the emergency services. The baby was then rushed to the Bang Lamung district hospital. (Photo by MIGUEL MEDINA / AFP) Thailand’s Central Intellectual Property Court has ordered Super Broadband Network (SBN) to cease streaming World Cup 2022 football matches via its AIS Playbox service, on the grounds that it infringes upon the broadcast rights of True Corporation. True Corporation claims that it is the only broadcaster in Thailand which has the right to show all 64 World Cupmatches on IPTV and OTT platforms. It appears, however, that a number of other IPTV services have claimed “Must Carry” rights to broadcast the World Cup, which infringes upon True’s rights. True then filed a lawsuit with the Central Intellectual Property Court against SBN, seeking injunctive relief. The COVID-19 crisis may have passed, but the threat from smog is back for the long term. Hazy skies are a sign that hazardous fine dust particles – which can be deadly – should not be taken for granted. “We expect the smog to worsen in the rest of this year,” said Kasetsart University’s Assoc Prof Witsanu Attavanich, an expert in climate-change research and PM2.5 situation analysis. Dr Witsanu explained that the amount of PM2.5 dust – tiny particles in the air measuring 2.5 microns or less in diameter – is now growing because stay-at-home COVID-19 control measures are being lifted. “Most people no longer work from home,” he said. “Most students have returned to campus too”. Sonthi Kotchawat, an independent expert on environmental health, notes that many kinds of activities have resumed in the post-pandemic period. Back in 2019, the average amount of PM2.5 particles was as high as 59 micrograms per cubic meter (μg/m3) of air in Bangkok. The number of days when PM2.5 exceeded the safe limit of 50μg/m3 was 64. Officials from the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) had earlier been unable to seize this airplane, parked at Ban Bo Fai Airport, Hua Hin district, Prachuap Khiri Khan province, after the inspection officer found that it was not registered in the name of Chaiyanat, who surrendered earlier this week after being slapped with drug charges, Sub.-Lt. by Paul Rujopakarn BANGKOK (NNT) - As COVID-19 infections see a worldwide resurgence, the public is being urged to take precautions during the cold season. The Department of Medical Services (DMS) is advising eligible groups, especially the elderly, to receive booster vaccinations as soon as possible. DMS Director-General Thongchai Keeratihuttayakorn assured that the number of available beds at hospitals in Greater Bangkok would not be a concern. Adequate supplies of COVID medication for patients have also been prepared by the DMS. Dr Thongchai said he expected more reports of respiratory tract and cold patients during the current period between the rainy season and the cold season, accompanied by new COVID cases. He called for members of the public to be mindful of their health and observe safety measures accordingly. People are also urged to register for booster doses, as the rate of followup vaccinations falls short of the current target. The DMS chief also addressed concerns about new COVID sub-variants that are more transmissible and more capable of evading human immune systems. He explained that the sub-variants have not been found to cause more severe symptoms, with available information suggesting they are actually less virulent than previous strains. Most hospitalized patients and those in serious condition have been members of vulnerable groups who face heightened risks of developing severe symptoms. Many were also either unvaccinated or had not yet received a booster injection. As of November 19, the number of administered booster doses stood at 32 million, falling short of the target to cover at least 50% of the population. Government Unveils Urgent Narcotics Action Plan by Paul Rujopakarn BANGKOK (NNT) - Tackling narcotics is considered a national agenda, with Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha earlier this week unveiling the government’s urgent phase action plan for addressing the issue. by Paul Rujopakarn BANGKOK (NNT) - Tackling narcotics is considered a national agenda, with Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha earlier this week unveiling the government’s urgent phase action plan for addressing the issue. The unveiling saw the attendance of representatives from various Thai and foreign agencies, including the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the Foreign Anti-Narcotics and Crime Community of Thailand (FANC). On this occasion, the prime minister witnessed the presentation of monetary awards for officials involved in asset seizures in major drug cases in 2022. About 8 million baht was awarded to officials who worked on four cases, equivalent to a 30% cut from the value of assets seized in the cases. The premier also delivered his policy for cracking down on narcotics, acknowledging that the drug issue is complicated and impacts national security. Addressing it therefore requires prevention, suppression and rehabilitation efforts, as well as collaboration with neighboring countries. The government has revised relevant laws to improve the efficiency of suppression and efforts to arrest traffickers and sellers, effectively leading to the seizure of 11.1 billion baht worth of drugs. Gen Prayut meanwhile urged educational institutes to remain safe zones against drugs and called for family support against drug use, as well as the rehabilitation of drug users. Sub-district-level teams will also monitor communities for drug users while security forces work to safeguard borders against traffickers and seize the assets of trafficking rings. The prime minister also warned that agency authorities will be held accountable for drug offenses committed by subordinates, adding that informants must be protected accordingly.
