Constitutional Court voting decision a watershed moment for Thai politics says top Pheu Thai MP by Carla Boonkong & Pranee O' Connor Mr Sutin Klangsaeng MP, Chief Whip for the Pheu Thai Party and the opposition in the House of Representatives, told reporters that next week’s Constitutional Court decision on the electoral law for deciding party list seats will be a decisive moment The Pheu Thai Party won zero party list seats in the 2019 General Election with 21.9% of the vote, seats that ultimately, due to the single ballot system with a divisor of 500, were awarded to smaller political parties. Based on its vote share, it should have won at least 30 extra party list seats. Mr Sutin Klangsaeng MP, Chief Whip for the Pheu Thai Party and the opposition in the House of Representatives, told reporters that next week’s Constitutional Court decision on the electoral law for deciding party list seats will be a decisive moment by Carla Boonkong & Pranee O' Connor The Pheu Thai Party won zero party list seats in the 2019 General Election with 21.9% of the vote, seats that ultimately, due to the single ballot system with a divisor of 500, were awarded to smaller political parties. Based on its vote share, it should have won at least 30 extra party list seats. The Pheu Thai Party MP for Maha Sarakham and opposition chief whip, on Friday, told the press that next Wednesday’s decision from the Constitutional Court may be one of historic importance for democracy and the way forward for politics in Thailand. Sutin Klangsaeng said that a green light from the court on the legality of the organic electoral law, approved by parliament in August, would pave the way for a successful General Election next year with a fair electoral system while also going far to remove the grounds for protesting against the next democratically elected government. He predicted the alternative decision by the court to reject the law would leave Thailand navigating a difficult and darker path that lawmakers would find extremely challenging. The Constitutional Court will rule on Wednesday 30th November on whether the electoral law passed in August, in controversial circumstances without a quorum, in its original draft form, is illegal or not following a petition by 105 MPs, mainly from smaller parties in the House of Representatives who stand to be wiped out of the new voting and seat allocation system for General Elections come into force. Thai Alcohol Control Committee opposes selling booze till 4 AM By Tanakorn Panyadee PHOTO: Khaosod National — The Thai Alcohol Control Committee opposed a proposal to extend the legal hours for selling alcoholic beverages to 4 AM, citing a potential rise in traffic accidents. PHOTO: Khaosod By Tanakorn Panyadee National — The Thai Alcohol Control Committee opposed a proposal to extend the legal hours for selling alcoholic beverages to 4 AM, citing a potential rise in traffic accidents. Dr. Opas Karnkawinongpop, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Public Health, revealed to Thai reporters today, November 25th, after completing a meeting with the Alcohol Control Committee that the committee initially opposed the idea of allowing the sale of alcohol from 5 PM to 4 AM. The committee said it was too long because it meant alcohol could be sold for 11 hours per day, which could increase alcohol-related health problems, injuries, and casualties. Dr. Opas stated the chance of drunk-driving-related accidents could also rise by more than 27% or 10-20 casualties per day if alcohol was allowed to be sold from 5 PM to 4 AM despite all-night police checkpoints. The Thai Alcohol Control Committee had already considered the economic benefits of the proposal, but still had agreed that the extension should not be mandated, Dr. Opas added. Stargazers in Thailand and worldwide will have an ideal opportunity to view Mars, as it will approach a distance of about 81.5 million kilometres from Earth, which is the closest it will come this year, according to the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT). Mars will appear at its largest since 2020, reaching an apparent size of 17.2 arcseconds (an angular measurement equal to 1/3600 of a degree) across, dropping only to 17.1 at opposition on December 8th. On December 8th, Mars will lie directly opposite the Sun, with Earth nestled in between. This arrangement is such that Mars rises at sunset and stays illuminated in reddish orange throughout the night, before setting at sunrise. This means thatthere is plenty of time to dodge clouds and stargazers will geta good look at it, according to NARIT. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt discussing the Ashton Asoke luxury condo case today, Nov. 25, 2022 by TNR Staff BANGKOK Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said his deputy is holding talks on the Ashton Asoke luxury condo case Friday (Nov. 25) after the Central Administrative Court passed a verdict to resolve land procurement within 180 days, Matichon newspaper said. The Siam Society under the Royal Patronage had filed a case over the development of project with the three parties named being the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) which granted usage of a 13-metre side road to the project, and Ananda MF Asia Asoke Co., Ltd., Ananda Development Plc’s joint venture company in which it holds 51% stake. According to a Silk Legal article, the basis for the claim comes from Section 2, Paragraph 2 of the Ministerial Regulation No. 33 (B.E. 2535) (1992), which stipulates that a high rise building with more than 30,000 square metres of total floor area must have a side road that is at least 12 metres in length connecting to a public road. This is defined by the Ministerial Regulation as a road that the public can enter or pass through with or without a fee. Ashton Asoke condominium, with a total floor area of 55,348 square metres, is subject to this requirement. by TNR Staff A COVID-INFECTED security guard was found dead at the booth of a factory in Suvarnabhumi area Ftiday morning (Nov. 25) with four other Covid patients having also died at their homes in Bangkok over the past few days, Naewna newspaper said. Ruamkatanyu Foundation rescuers found Mr. Chaturong (surname withheld), 41, lying dead on the booth’s floor. They then wore PPE suits and tested him with an ATK kit and got a positive result. It was assumed that he died while on duty with his body taken to Ramathibodi Chakri Naruebodindra Hospital in Samut Prakan province and later to be released to his relatives for funeral rites. Meanwhile Mr. Anawut Phoampai, a Ruamkatanyu Foundation rescuer, said in a Facebook post that at 5.25 p.m. on Nov. 18 his team was notified of a suspected death after neighbours got a bad smell from a house in their community. He admitted that he is not sure whether Congress will approve Thailand’s acquisition, as one of its close allies, because the plane’s technology is regarded as top secret, adding that the RTAF has no Plan B if the US response is negative. The F35 is a multi-role fighter with stealth technology. More than a fighter jet, it has the ability to collect, analyse and share data and is a powerful force multiplier that enhances all airborne, surface and ground-based assets in the battlespace.
