SPONSORED BY by Rooster | ASEAN NOW I was too young to remember 1966 so Mexico '70 was my first world cup and I have the full sticker book to prove it. How we marvelled over Pele, Jairzinho, Gerson, Tostao and Rivelino. Being allowed to stay up late to watch England play in a memorable defeat to the Brazilians. Qualifying for the knockouts only to lead West Germany 2-0 and go out 2-3 after collapsing. A rude awakening of the misery of the world to any nine year old.... And so it was last night at 1.55 am when Rooster went to wake up his own nine year old daughter to see England put the USA to the sword just like we did vs Iran. That was the plan - in her naivety she believed it. In my own, so did I. Two hours later having both somehow stuck through a dreadful 0-0 match on a drowzy sofa, I felt like apologizing! England were outplayed and utterly dreadful. The match a borefest. I reminded my daughter that football supporting - like with our beloved Spurs - is up one minute down the next. A rollercoaster that makes you feel great then deflated in almost the same breath. Move on. It'll be better next time. Forget the train wrecks. I'm English, I'm well versed in making excuses and moving on. Father and daughter trudged off to bed. The headlines on the BBC seemed a bit political. England had "laboured' to a goalless draw, and manager Southgate was being condemned for his "conservatism". England will still qualify if they don't lose by four goals to Wales in the last match. The USA must aim to beat Iran. In a very entertaining match early in Thailand's evening yesterday the Welsh were deservedly beaten by a resurgent Iran side. As predicted in this column yesterday (along with a thumping success for England....). The Iranians hit both posts in one attack and had many other excellent chances before a superb goal by Cheshmi and a final breakaway goal settled the game. in the second game Qatar lost 1-3 to Senegal. At least the home supporters had a few minutes to savor in the second half when they dreamed they could get back in the game. That was soon snuffed out and the subsequent draw between the Netherlands and Ecuador, 1-1, meant Qatar became the first nation to be eliminated. Well, they scored a goal but the truth is they are only an emerging football nation and got precisely what they deserved. Nada Dinar. Tonight's action still follows the 5pm-8pm-11pm-2am schedule in Thailand: Group D Tunisia vs Australia 5pm Group C Poland vs Saudi Arabia 8pm Group D France vs Denmark 11pm Group C Argentina vs Mexico 2am I expect strong in defence Tunisia to beat Australia who were poor in the first game. Poland should show that the Saudi's win against Argentina was a one-off aberration. The Argentinians should get back on track by thumping Mexico. Denmark could be wily enough to get a draw against France, especially if they can get Eriksen more involved and pinch a goal. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-11-26

Taxis used in Bangkok area for five years with fake plates - danger to passengers highlighted Picture: Siam Rath Siam Rath reported on action by the metropolitan police and local forces in Klong 3, Klong Luang, Pathum Thani against taxis with fake registration plates. Picture: Siam Rath Siam Rath reported on action by the metropolitan police and local forces in Klong 3, Klong Luang, Pathum Thani against taxis with fake registration plates. Back on october 26th they investigated a man called Ronnachai, 46, who they found with fake plate making equipment at his house. Picture: Siam Rath At a shop he ran nearby were 300 damning items of evidence that showed he had been producing fake plates for vehicles that could not be legally registered as taxis due to their age. A subsequent inquiry led to an Altis taxi that had fake plates that had been driven around the Bangkok area for 5 years. It was more than 12 years old and had had a makeover to make it look like a newer vehicle. In other moves a further five taxis were seized and sent to forces in the metropolitan area where crimes occurred. Picture: Siam Rath Forgery of plates and other items like tax discs can see people jailed for up to 5 years and fined up to 100,000 baht. Police said that the proliferation of fake plates meant problems for the public in that the police were unable to catch taxi drivers responsible for sex crime or theft. It also made it hard to get back things that forgetful passengers left behind. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-11-26 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Damning English survey ranking leaves Thailand almost rock bottom in the World - Singapore and Philippines lead way in Asia Says.com reported on the latest rankings of English Proficiency by a Swedish firm called EF Education First Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1278922-damning-english-survey-ranking-leaves-thailand-almost-rock-bottom-in-the-world-singapore-and-philippines-lead-way-in-asia/ -
Says.com reported on the latest rankings of English Proficiency by a Swedish firm called EF Education First in which the data from 2.1 million test results among non-native speakers was used to compile a 111 country list ranked according to five categories: 1 Very High Proficiency - top were the Netherlands followed by Singapore, Austria, Norway and Denmark in fifth. No surprise there was no Thailand there. 2 High proficiency - the Philippines made 22nd on this list with Malaysia snapping at their heels in 24th. Still no Thailand, but still no major surprise. 3. Moderate proficiency - maybe Thailand could be here. Wrong again. This larger list contained the likes of Italy in 32nd, France, 34, Russia, 40, India 52 and Vietnam 60th. So what of category 4 of the five, Low Proficiency. Still no Thailand. China, 62, Nepal, 65, Bangladesh, 66, Japan, 80. Finally it was the lowest of the low, the Very Low proficiency section up to 111th and last place. Myanmar made 93rd, Cambodia 94th while Thailand got 97th. Global ranking of countries and regions They could still crow, however, as Laos was last! Also bringing up the rear were Yemen and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Usually the Thai media is all over surveys like a rash, especially when Thailand is presented in a glowing light. On this occasion we have yet to see a Thai news report on the story. This one came from Malaysia and barely commented on Thailand at all. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-11-26 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
