  2. By Erich Parpart KLA and Chart Pattana parties are merging for the upcoming general election. The news was confirmed by Kobsak Sabhavasu, a strategist for KLA Party. The merger came as new electoral rules will be unfavorable for small parties. The 2-ballot system and the method where 100 will be used as a divisor to calculate the number of party-list MP for each party meant that it will be very difficult for small parties to get even one seat in parliament. 4. Picture: Thai Rath The husband and wife owners of a recently opened electrical appliance store were the big winners of 60 million baht with the ticket number 929332 in yesterday's state lottery draw. Suchet Phimpha 42, and Khanita Phimpha, 32, went to register their lucky win with ten tickets to Pol Capt Preecha Teksee of the Lat Lum Kaew, Pathum Thani police before catching up with reporters from Thai Rath at their nearby store. Khanitha said that they had just had a "tham bun" or merit making ceremony to mark the opening of their shop on Wednesday. She'd seen the number 32 on some pomelo, it was also her age and she'd had a dream about a relative with a pick-up who'd driven into a klong. Their plate number was 2232 that were also the last four numbers of her phone number. So getting a 32 number was a no-brainer! She asked her elder sister to buy that number for her online yesterday morning and when the numbers were drawn in the afternoon employees said the last three digits were 332. When she enquired what the first three were and was told 929 she and her husband kept their composure in the shop before going out back where all hell broke loose. Khanitha said she and her family were people who believed in sacred things and always made merit. She'd be paying off their debts, investing in a warehouse and doing plenty more merit making following the win, that is large by Thai standards. She added that two of her employees also won with the number 83 (the two digit winner). Before saying that any customers of her shop could enjoy a 20% discount at her store from now until next Friday. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-02 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 8. Sanook Thai Caption: Genuine but not supernatural Sanook reported that a man called Rin, 43, in Khao Din sub-district of Krabi in southern Thailand had found a hollow stone with a black mineral deposit inside. The 5 kilogram stone was thought to be what experts in the field call a "lek lai". The deposit seemingly can be melted to make jewelry and amulets and is highly prized. Some are considered magical or supernatural and can fetch astronomical sums. Picture: Sanook Rin was offered 50,000 baht for his specimen after posting it on a site that caters to experts in the field. But he wasn't selling. Another expert suggested it was "lek lai ngok" or germinated iron. Further match stick checks revealed that it was no longer considered magical as it had been cracked and the magic had kind of fled the scene. A ceremony would have to be performed to reestablish its supernatural properties. Had it not been cracked and had it been magical it would have been worth 500 million baht. Investigations continue into composition of the stone that was yellow on the outside and black within. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-02 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 10. Picture: Siam Rath Thai media including Siam Rath were less interested in acting premier Prawit Wongsuwan's visit to a water treatment facility in Chachoengsao than a cock-up over transport, notes ASEAN NOW. After being briefed on how waste water is turned into potable water Prawit - known as Big Pom and not known for his ability to walk extended distances - got into golf cart #1 for a two kilometer trip to a klong. Picture: Siam Rath Unfortunately despite a large number of carts and trams following there weren't enough spaces for two heavily dressed security men or aides. They had to run alongside the portly premier and one couldn't keep up at all in the heat of the late morning. He just gave up the chase. Sanook Thai Caption: Are you tired? The one that did manage the full distance was met with a bit of joshing about being tired amid suggestions he must be trained as a soldier or a fitness freak. No such jibes were leveled at Prawit of course who after hearing more about water treatment undoubtedly went for a satisfying lunch. 12. Daily News Thai Caption Not fit for purpose! Safety checks by the local authority and DOPA officials in Pattaya on fire exits at some Walking Street clubs have found them in an unusable state. It is clearly a disaster waiting to happen and could mirror the tragedy at Mountain B nearby. Pornchai Sang-iat from the Banglamung authority led the team to the once popular bar area that has been undergoing a makeover recently; exits and extinguishers were checked. Picture: Daily News They found blocked fire exits that were potential death traps in the event of a conflagration, reported Daily News. Some establishments only had one front exit to the street and could not be adapted to provide another. Picture: Daily News ASEAN NOW notes that the checks are a delayed response to the disaster in Sattahip a few kilometers down the eastern seaboard. There at least 22 people have died in a horrific fire at a club called Mountain B on August 5th. Walking Street is a hodge-podge of bars, clubs and restaurants that critics say should be demolished to make way for something more modern and tourist friendly. And safer. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-02 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 20. Daily News Thai Caption: Shocking pack of soi dogs Residents of a community in Surin, NE Thailand, turned to the Thai media in frustration after their local authority have done nothing to solve the problem of soi dogs. A pack of more than twenty fierce animals has been plaguing the Phromthep area for three to four years. They bite and cut in front of motorcycles causing many accidents. One resident called Sak (an assumed name) said that there were four accidents just last week. "The muang tessaban have done nothing to help despite our calls," he said. "So we decided to contact the press". While the Daily News reporters were there one animal started barking quickly followed by five or six others. Picture: Daily "They've been there was years," he said pointing to the area by a dirt track leading to a warehouse. "They breed and there's always a new one to join those biting the residents". The residents hope by getting some national attention the authority will be forced to act. Thais are reluctant to take matters into their own hands, notes ASEAN NOW due in no small part to animal cruelty laws that can see people jailed. There is also the Buddhist aspect of live and let live. Some feel dogs get a better deal than people. Also there are dog lovers who come out and feed the pests thinking they are doing a good deed can also be a major part of a problem that exists throughout Thailand. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-02 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
