  1. File photo By Online Reporter Thailand’s government has no plan to overturn its ban on e-cigarettes and vaping, according to comments made by the country’s public health minister. Speaking on Monday, (Aug 29), Deputy Prime Minister and Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul reaffirmed the ban on the import and use of e-cigarettes. Mr Anutin said that e-cigarettes pose significant health risks to users and that vaping was helping to create new smokers particularly among young people in Thailand. According to a survey conducted by the National Statistical Office in 2021, more than half of the 80,000 e-cigarette smokers in Thailand were found to be aged between 15 and 24 years old. 5. Picture: Naew Na Naew Na reported on a grim tale of violence playing out between a 20 year old man called An, his ex girlfriend referred to only as "B", 20, and B's new boyfriend Tae, 18. An fron Ban Jan, Ban Dung, Udon Thani in the NE of Thailand along with two friends attacked Tae who comes from a neighboring village. They used a knife and a harpoon attachment. Tae told the media that he had arranged to meet B in Soi Wat Buraphawan. Before he got to their rendezvous area he came up against An and two friends who were riding on two bikes. He was chased and narrowly avoided being hit by a knife that was wielded at him. He subsequently came off his own vehicle and sought refuge in a house. As he did so An followed him and picked up the harpoon attachment that was lying about the property and swung it at his stomach narrowly missing entering his abdomen. The commotion alerted the householder who said they were calling the police. An fled with his friends. Tae credited his survival with a picture of his dad that he keeps in his wallet. He said that B had split up with An a year ago but he refused to let her move on with her life. He had already threatened him with a gun at his house if he didn't leave her alone. Now following the latest incident he had sent B a video message telling her that if she doesn't stop seeing him "It'll be you next - for sure". Police are preparing charges of assault, attempted murder and theft against An. Tae said he wanted the full force of the law to come down on An who clearly wants him dead. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-08-30 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 7. Picture: 77kaoded Bang Bua Thong police in Nonthaburi were alerted by relatives of a young woman who claims she was raped by a man posing as a policeman. The police went to a house in Bang Rat Pattana sub-district where they found a woman aged 20 in tears. The assailant was hiding in the toilet but soon emerged. He was Wiraphat Thamthip, 27. Drugs, drug taking equipment and a fake gun were found at the property. The suspect had a previous offence in 2018 for pretending to be a drugs suppression policeman under the name of Sema Prajan on Facebook. Now he had moved to a dating app and was variously pretending to be a lance corporal in the police or a corporal in the commandoes. Picture: 77kaoded In an initial interrogation the suspect denied raping the woman and said she had come over to his house willingly to stay the night. He claimed that he wanted her to go home but she wouldn't leave. He admitted that he was not a policeman but a security guard. He claimed that the security company had put a rank on his ID as that helped him in his work. Picture: 77kaoded The chief of the Bang Bua Thong police said they were waiting on a rape test from a hospital. But the suspect who has a lot of drug convictions is being charged with drug taking, illegal detention, rape and assault. While he did not claim to be a policeman on this occasion the use of the title on his ID shows his intentions. 77kaoded said that the police were asking other potential victims of the bogus cop to come forward. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-08-30 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 9. File photo. For information purposes only. By Online Reporter A new four lane expressway which will link Nakhon Pathom with Tha Yang in Phetchaburi is set to improve travel between the region and central Thailand. The expressway, officially titled the Intercity Highway No. 8, Nakhon Pathom – Cha-am route, also known as the M8, will stretch 109 kilometers and should help to reduce the time it takes to drive to and from Hua Hin, Cha Am, Phetchaburi and Nakhon Pathom and in to Bangkok. According to the Ministry of Transport, the M8 will connect with the Intercity Highway – Bang Yai – Kanchanaburi (M81) at the Nakhon Chai Sri Interchange in Nakhon Pathom, ending on the National Highway No. 4 at the 188 kilometre marker in Tha Yang. The M8 expressway will be a combination of roads and elevated structures with bridges being used to cross sections of existing local roads, rivers and areas which consist of soft soil. This will help to mitigate the impact of land expropriation, the Ministry of Transport says. 11. 77kaoded Thai Caption: Beware! Marijuana seeds for sale con The chief of the Department of Medical Sciences warned members of the public not to buy seeds from criminals who claim that their seeds are officially registered and recognised by their department. Suphakij Sirilak said that this referred to marijuana strains known as Hang Krarok Phuphan ST 1 and others. ASEAN NOW notes that Hang Krarok - or squirrel's tail is a variety of marijuana more commonly known as Thai Stick. It is sold far more cheaply than other strains that have more pungent flowers. Suphakij said that for years the department has been doing studies but the public will need to wait a while before seeds and seedlings have their stamp of approval. It was all about quality checks. One herbal center group has certified one strain called Tanaosri Kan Daeng RD1 that guarantees "feminized seeds" in 99% of cases. This strain has a high cannabinoid content and can be used to propagate the species, reported 77kaoded. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-08-30 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 15. From Thursday (September 1), COVID-19 patients can buy prescription antiviral medicines from pharmacies, as authorities ease access to weapons against the virus. “Health agencies are offering easier access to these medications while still guarding the safety of patients,” said Dr. Udom Kachintorn, chair of Thailand’s committee on public health reform. Pharmacists will be able to fill prescriptions for Favipiravir, Molnupiravir, and Paxlovid. Pharmacies are required to purchase these drugs from importers certified by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and record all sales to customers. The records will be monitored by authorities just like steroid sales. Licensed suppliers can sell antiviral medicines to hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies in line with the regulations. Prices will not be controlled as the government believes market competition will ensure fairness and affordability. 17. Picture: Siam Rath Siam Rath reported on posts and videos uploaded to the site of Muang Prakan v2 after yesterday's extraordinary storm in Bangkok and surrounding areas. In what many described as a hellish storm the sky turned black in the early morning - instead of daybreak it was more like the time after sunset. In the area of the Praeksa municipal dump in the Praeksa Mai area of Samut Prakan thousands of birds of all varieties took to the skies for several minutes before settling on trees and bushes. After the storm as the skies cleared they returned to their scavenging activities at the dump. Locals said in years of the birds being there they had never seen the like of it. Thai media has reported many different angles after Bangkokians woke to extraordinary sights in the skies over the Thai capital. One scientist said it was a clear sign of climate change - and things would only get worse. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-08-30 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 23. Picture: Sanook Sanook reported on a feel good story after a TikTok video was posted by meenaxsr900. The video featured a group of what the Thais call "Big Bikers" who were showing consideration to a neighborhood community. The bikers were wheeling their high powered machines instead of revving them and creating annoyance because there was a sleeping baby in one of the houses. They wheeled past then started their engines further down the road. The post spoke of "greng jai" a Thai term that is widely used to mean showing consideration for someone else or their feelings. It is a trait that Thais are particularly proud of. The poster joked that the bikers looked like thieves in the night but praised the group. The video was liked nearly 40,000 times and received widespread comment. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-08-30 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
