However, the service sector continued to improve from increases in foreign tourists, manufacturing production also improved from more supply. “Indicators of private consumption and private investment declined slightly after accelerating in the preceding periods while higher living costs are also adding pressure on consumption while exports also declined in line with lower trading partners’ demand,” said Chayawadee Chai-Anant, senior director of the economic and policy department at the BoT. The situation is in marked contrast to Thailand where government spokesperson Rachada Dhnadirek emphasised that the country’s target in 2022 for foreign tourist numbers was 25% of the number seen in 2019 with figures released by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) showing that from January to the end August 2022, the spend per foreign tourist was down by at least 11.5%. The situation raises disturbing questions about the setback suffered by the kingdom’s foreign tourism sector since 2020. by Joseph O' Connor Figures this week from Paris show a French foreign tourist industry achieving revenues nationally at 22% ahead of figures for 2019 while Thailand will be aiming to achieve, at best, only 33% of the numbers seen three years ago or a 67% loss. This news must be disturbing for the sector in Thailand and raises questions about the permanent damage inflicted on the Thai industry since 2020. Thailand’s foreign tourism sector appears to have suffered permanent damage due to the country’s emergency since 2020 with projected visitor numbers and a foreign tourism revenue stream this year which will be between 65% and 75% lower than that seen in 2019. The situation is in marked contrast to France which recorded bumper visitor numbers in July and August with expenditure in hotels up 22% on 2019 figures. On Tuesday, executives at the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) talked up the possibility of targeting wealthy Indian families to come to Thailand to celebrate wedding events as the kingdom approaches the high season for the foreign tourism sector which begins in October. He told reporters that he got a call every parent dreaded that his only daughter was dead - hit head-on by a pick-up truck. She wasn't going in the direction of the school. She was off to pick up a friend. The driver of the Nissan Navaro said he saw her on the phone coming toward him. He braked coming to a halt, but she rode into his lane on the two-lane road and collided head on. The accident happened at the Udon Thani to Nong Saeng Ban Lupwai Road in Muang district of Udon Thani. The pick-up had severe damage to the front and the young lady's red Honda Wave was nearby on the ground. The driver said he was delivering jelly to Nong Saeng when he saw the teen on the phone coming toward him. A public health volunteer said this showed the danger of looking at phones while on motorcycles. Such behavior breaks concentration, they said. Police are investigating the cause of the accident. File photo for reference only Mobiles and Motorbikes go together The bottom line is this is a regular occurrence as many motorcyclists automatically look at their mobiles, especially at the traffic lights and continue texting often while in motion. Go back a couple of decades and we did not have this problem, as there were no mobiles around. The fact that in this case, the girl was underage is another issue. However after this tragedy, surely now is the time for the Thais roads minister to officially ban the use of mobile phones for drivers and passengers on motorbikes across Thailand. Perhaps the best deterrent would be for the police to confiscate the phone for three days on the first occasion, and then if they are caught a second time, they pay a fine and their phone is taken away for a week. The World Snooker Tour's official website has announced that next week's World Six Reds World Championship has been cancelled, reports ASEAN NOW. WST said that "our partners in Thailand have advised us of the postponement and we are working with them on finding new dates." Among the drugs were 21,270 kilos of Ya Ba (meth mixed with caffeine), 9,396 kilos of "Ice" (crystal meth), 561 kilos of heroin, 89 kilos of ecstasy and 278 kilos of opium. Daily News Thai Caption: Parents heartbroken A mother suspects foul play after her daughter was found dead at the end of a school day in a van that had been parked since morning. She has told police that she thinks her daughter may have been attacked and made to look as though she had spent all day in the van. Earlier Phan Thong, Chonburi, police major Prasert Kulabutradee had been alerted about the death of a child at a well known private school in the area. Along with rescue services they found the dead body of "A" aged just 7 on the seat behind the driver. She was face down, pale, with blood coming out of her mouth. Next to the child - in primary class 2/2 - was a school bag and a water cup, reported Daily News (the story was also widely reported across Thai television). Police interviewed teachers and the driver who gave evidence that the van had picked up children from home and it was believed they had all alighted on arrival at school. After that the driver went to park in another area ahead of the home run later in the day. At 4 pm the driver went back to the vehicle, found the unresponsive and clearly dead child and alerted the head teacher and the authorities. Later the mother of the girl filed a report with the Phan Thong police against the school and those responsible. She told investigators that following the incident three teachers had come to her house but would not reveal precisely what had happened. One asked callously: "Does she have an underlying medical condition?" When pressed about what had happened it was admitted that "your child is not breathing now". The mother said this sent her into shock but still the teachers would not give more details. The mother said that this was far more than a child suffocating in a van after being forgotten, as bad as that is. She said her child is quite large and would have been easily seen. She wants to know if her child was attacked then put in the van to make it appear she had died there. She said she had paid good money for a private education for her child and expected a far greater duty of care than this for her only daughter. Sunantha, 24, had CCTV footage from a condominium in the area on August 19th. The footage can be viewed here after it was published by Sanook. It shows a repairman enter the lift with her sister named only as "Ying" aged 18. He seems to aim a playful punch at the younger lady before following with her to her room and taking her arm. It is alleged that thereafter he tried to rape Ying after dragging her into the room. She was only saved by the intervention of a male friend who arrived, reported Sanook. Sunantha was concerned that the case was going nowhere and that the condo repairman was still in his job. The alleged assailant was named as a 30-35 year old man called Thitiwat.
